    GEC is a "Traditional" knife maker. Pocket knives used to come almost exclusively flat ground. The edge of the knife sometimes came sharp enough to cut, but most times it was ground acute and had just a pass or two on the edge at the correct sharpening angle. Traditional knife makers assumed the purchaser would put their own edge on the blade how they needed it for whatever jobs they were buying the knife for. They understood in the past that men were going to sharpen the hell out of their knife and didn't see a need to sell someone a knife that was scary sharp out the box.

I like it better than and of the other 6 or 7 other super steels that I've used. I don't have any K390 blades, but I did read that it is similar to 10v and I do have 10v a blade in 10v. Ceramic is very hard though, not very far off diamonds. But yeah ive done K390 on regular naniwa waterstones and it works completely fine so there is a myth there for sure. Same stone cuts cruwear and magnacut just fine too, great results. CBN does really well too.

    water stones will abrade the matrix or the steel but not the carbides, it essentially removes the matrix till the carbides just sort of fall out so you can sharpen them on water stones but CBN and diamonds will be much more effective and allow for much finer edges

    @@acid6urns Thats true for alot of carbides in non-super steels too though, some of them are harder than industrial diamonds are so this should be true to some degree for all steels. I havent seen or experienced any issues with it so far, the biggest difference ive noticed have been that waterstones scoop out alot faster on these steels. I do know someone with a microscope though, will ask to take a look to compare micropithing the next time im there.

    @@acid6urns Hello again, It turns out I probably dont have to test this, Todd at ScienceOfSharp already have an article on carbides in K390 where he does address the claim of 'carbide popout' or 'scoop-out' as he calls it, and found that the carbides at the surface eventually pulverizes even when ground against traditional aluminum oxide and silica based abbrasives, it just takes alot longer and is much harder on your abbrasives. That is if I understood it correctly though, feel free to read over it too and let me know if I missed something :)

  • @acid6urns
    @acid6urnsКүн бұрын

    @@kvernesdotten what? diamonds are harder than any carbide you find in steels. vanadium carbide is by far the most common carbide and is easily abraded by diamond, the only one that MAYBE would be the same hardness as diamonds is niobium carbide which is almost nonexistent in knife steel.

    Will you PLEASE take a look at www.youtube.com/@BluntCutMetalWorks here on KZread and give this man the credit he deservers. For YEARS he has been demonstrating EXTREME hardness heat treats and edge geometry for over a decade. This man is easily as influential as the late Cliff Stamp and Dr. Larrin Thomas. He makes all his own knives, He does all his own heat treats and his testing is rather tough for a knife to complete without damage. He is a mathematics professor if I remember correctly..... Somebody really smart. The knife community NEEDS to become aware of Luong La. I have tried, but I believe that you, Erica, could help make his presence known by an even larger margin. Check out his vid he did 2 years ago on K390 blade @ 65HRC.

    I wouldn't go that far lol 95% of his testing is low alloy tools steels at pretty normal edge geometries. I've never seen him talk about the most important part of his more heavy duty tests, which is the blade geometry. You can't really make comparisons when the blade geometries aren't equivacated or known.

    @@SuperSteelSteveYou are a liar and stupid. Lying about: Luong has dozens of videos regarding super steels. He uses edge geometry and edge stability as a starting point to blade geometry. Since blade geometry is meaningless if your edge is unstable. Since when is a 10dps edge standard geometry? It isn't, thus lying about his "standard" edge geometry. Stupid: for having made claims that are verifiably false. Do some cursory research before blurting out falsehoods. Claiming something is true when 15 seconds of research would have yielded the evidence needed to stay away from the realm of stupidity, is by my estimation, pretty stupid. Try harder next time. It's a really great steel! My thinking goes as follows: For sharpening, ceramic stones are great for small touch-ups and maintenance, especially with such a thin edge. However, I wouldn't recommend them for full resharpening or fixing bigger edge damage. Ceramic stones are softer than the vanadium carbides in this steel, so they only remove the steel matrix, leaving a rougher, less sharp, and less durable edge, and it takes longer. So, my recommendation is: If you plan to completely maintain your knives yourself, buy a diamond or CBN stone. If you plan to handle regular maintenance but send it out to a pro for bigger damage or full resharpening, a ceramic stone or rod is more than enough. This steel holds a proper edge for a long time, depending on use.
