Springboks go back-to-back at RWC 2023: The biggest achievement in rugby history? | After Hours

Спорт

In this week's episode of Rugby After Hours, Johnnie Beattie is joined by, Joe Van Niekerk (South Africa), Jimmy Gopperth (New Zealand) and Nicola Matawalu (Fiji) to preview the highly anticipated Rugby World Cup 2023 quarter-finals. The All Blacks went back-to-back in 2011 and 2015, but if South Africa win in France, is that a better achievement? The guys debate this outcome, as well as answering a whole host of questions on the matches between Wales and Argentina, Ireland v New Zealand, England v Fiji and France v South Africa. Let us know your opinion in the comments!

I think that the draw for the next World Cup and further on should not be left on the old gambling method. It should be decided 3 months before the World Cup solely based on rankings at that time

Logistics dictates the naming of the draw. So logic has it, should a team meander along willy nilly, they're likely to be placed in a "easy" pool. Sorte!😂

Its been interesting to see how many kiwi pundits and kiwi fans seem to think that the Italy and Uruguay results have shown the All Blacks have improved (from the forwards to the backline). Sadly, like is the case for the French, the Italy game didn't show anything about whether they have improved or not. This weekends game will be the only game to show everyone if the all blacks have improved, but i think Ireland are favourites for this game and deservedly so as I think they are the better team.

In my humble opinion lack of player rotation will be Ireland's undoing. Will be hard for them to top their performance against Scotland. Watch for signs of early mental and physical fatigue from Ireland while NZ on the other hand will be playing like a team possessed.

@@SAbestcountryintheworld-ww9of If Jimmy O Brien plays this weekend then our full squad will of had gametime at some stage, So Rotation has been going on...am not worried on that front.Still want Healy back in squad as he is way better than Kilcoyne esp in scrum, a part from that a full compliement to play from. This is the game Ireland has been eyeing up since 2019. We have slowly got better in every game so far, We won against SA but we didnt play well, we knocked on when we on the line and then all our missed throws in lineout, this looks to be running ok now. I think Henderson is a better lineout operator than Ryan and certainly Dan Sheehan is better than Kelleher. Sheehan looks to be getting going now, savage try scorer.

As a South African supporter I would love to see the Springboks defend their title but doing that won't be a greater achievement compared to The All Blacks 2011 and 2015 ...UNDEFEATED...title run unless the boks do a 2019 , 2023 and 2027 title defense.. Now that would be incredible .

If Ireland or France wins France may replace England in 4th, but Ireland probably be in 5th if they win with the worse record of the lot. Still you have to start somewhere.

I'm South African, the boks are my team obviously, but man I love New Zealand and Ireland, I have great respect for France but I really think we will beat them by a thin margin, the French are really good and are a bad luck team for the springboks actually and now that they've grown they really could beat us specially at home with their french flair, however I feel like the springboks are also on another level and about to peak now so I got my boys to win. As for the finals, almost all South Africans will tell you apart from the springboks their 2nd liked team is the all blacks, however, for me I am so proud of the Irish, I have always loved their team and have always felt in a bad way when they get kicked. I want an all green final, the Irish have proved they deserve the shot and I believe they will prove it again in these knockout stages by making it to the finals but then it's the springboks time for revenge and playing us in a final is not like anything the Irish would have experienced before although I think it will be close. I'm excited and nervous. These are just my thoughts but I would like to see SA vs IE in the final I think it would be massive. There's no knock on NZ there, I respect and love the all blacks all the same and they will forever be SA's biggest rugby rival but I really love the prospect of an all green final war

Well Thank you kind Sir, we may be the new kids on the block at the top end but we have very lean times in the Rugby World. 1980’s and 1990’s we took beating after beating from SH teams, year in year out. We hadn’t won a Rugby Championship since 1958,that’s beating France,England,Scotland,Wales. France used to batter us like the SH teams as did England,Wales and Scotland. A rare win here and there was like winning a WC! Early 2000 a new breed came with the Professional era. We were competing in the 6 Nations where we would win 2/3 most years,After a horrible defeat in 2007 WC to Argentina,New Coach came in,Declan Kidney and believe it or not we won a grand slam in 2009 first time in 51 years. It was manic and we had some world class players in Paul O Connell and Brian O Driscoll. We couldn’t get by the All Black hoodoo, we did get an odd win V the Boks or Australia. 2011 we beat Australia in WC pool stage, that was a great day. We won another grand slam in 2018, we had won a couple of championships too. Last hurdle for us is the World Cup. We have come a long way with lots of good players but the IRFU were very smart,Club rugby was huge in Europe by then. Both Munster and Leinster won numerous European titles. Kids started playing everywhere,New Clubs opened and there was always great time and money put in the right places and it drove it on. Anyway it’s great to have arrived, not sure we win it as there are some class teams there but to be mentioned as a possible winner is a far cry, exciting as well. Thanks for the nice gesture and best of luck to you guys.

I also think South Africa can win against France as for the All Blacks people are stuck on our series lost 2-1 to Ireland last year. But last year ain't this year, Ireland deserve to be favorites means nothing at QF's time. Hold on to your hat the Irish fans are going to go crazy hope they ain't stunned silence, this is it 4 yrs waiting again world number 1 and the All Black ain't ranked number 2 but 4. given the title the worse All Black side ever, believe that they will lose. A big statement is needed here which team will it be we will see.

Italy were 2-0 & we lost to France which I wasn't worried about, it set us up for Ireland we also knew 3 bonus point wins from the remaining teams will get us through. We played knowing where we would be but only if Ireland & France won their remaining games. I'm glad it went that way. I also think the South Africans didn't put a 100% into their lost to Ireland, pure speculation but was stated by South Africans that they preferred facing France in the QF than the All Blacks. We are where we want to be the other side of the equation depended on Ireland & France winning. Don't think anyone under any elusions what our plans were. Don't know why we're getting negative feedback because we did what was required 3 bonus point wins to see us through to the Qtr-Finals, mission accomplished. The pressure as a 4th ranked team playing Ireland ain't on us but Ireland as being the 1st ranked team. Just glad we got Ireland, you just worry about France.

Hey, I don't agree with your speculation. When you're a professional player you don't come into the pitch with these calculations. You're ready and play the best you can, you don't fear anyone and want to play against the best teams and players. You play to win and see who you will face. Stating SA prefer play the French rather than NZ... not so sure. It's always complicated to play against the country who organise the competition. Because they have a supplement of energy with the public and we can talk about referees who often had decisions who clearly helped the countries who were hosting the competition in the previous WC. Whats your basis that dominance has changed? a short stint at number 1 and not getting past the quarters? lol. you are coming off as a fool. Talking as if you have won the cup when youve just made it out of the pool play lol

This is pretty much what I expect from the RWC media mmm . . . experience. Open up without any opening package, instead goes right to a shot of the host (I guess) who has a descriptor that tells us he is a former Scotch international. Interestingly, at the start of the video you can see his mouth move and there isn't any sound. Cuts directly to a wide shot that shows 4 guys sitting around a table. There is a sign on the table that says A***F HOURS. I'm not swearing, you just can't read the 3 middle letters. Host introduces the guests (?), names only. The stuff they teach you in school about never framing a shot that is cut off at a joint must be all wrong because these aren't head-and-shoulders shots, these are head-and-elbow shots. Go figure. Ok, now we get the descriptors after the guest's introduction. We have a former Bok. Cuts to wide shot and we can now read *FTER HOURS. Camera dollys to the left until a plant starts to impinge on the shot. Cut to another head-and-elbows shot. Interestingly, there is less space in front of Joe's face than behind the back of his head. Glad I didn't pay to go to production school, all that money and they have no idea what is going on in the real world. Ah, here is Nikola's descriptor. Fiji. So we have 3 former international team players and a French league player. I better sign-off now. I'm starting to get a little motion sickness with the cuts from static shots to moving video to the slowly drifting wide video to the quick tight head edits to . . oh dear.

incorrect. there have been a lot of marginal calls. SA try for example, Hansen is tackled without the ball and unable to join the defensive line yet try still stood. Try also looked like a forward pass yet neither of these things were checked. Same game Etzebeth high shots Sexton early on after he releases the ball, late and potential yellow, not looked at. Did you see Ireland complain? No they just get on with as they expect SA, NZ and to cheat to try and beat them these days. SA have lost the last 3 meetings with Ireland.
