@@bcbloc02 I have always heard that discs and plows are two different devices that have very little in common. My dad had a commercial rototiller and stayed very busy for about 40 years until he retired! I have always loved rototilling and crop rotation and cover crops in the offseason! Rototilling vegetation back into the ground replaces nutrients, nitrogen, etc. After rototilling the vegetation back into the ground, the ground seems to be more prolific and grows faster and bigger crops. Also proper rototilling leaves the ground very well aerated and very smooth, a real thing of beauty!!!

I grew up in central Ohio. Every spring a Johnny popper would plow at least a 100 Acre field every spring. Hearing that tractor work all day marked spring is here. Nothing sounded like a Johnny popper at work. This brought back so many good memories sitting on the porch and listening to that tractor.

It's funny what sounds you remember from the past. Growing up, a farmer almost 3/4 of a mile away had a fire wood saw powered by a one lunger hit or miss engine. Even that far away, I could hear that engine hit every time they ran a log through the saw. Then it would be quite, one or two pops and then quite until they ran another log through the saw at which point it would fire every time. Now when I go to the country fairs, I always stop at the old engines just to watch and hear them run. They go so slow you just know they're going to stop, but just at that point they'll pop 2 - 3 times and off they go.

If you'd told me when I was a kid plowing into the night every spring, sleeping fast (!) so we could get chores done before I had to change for school, that I'd enjoy a movie about plowing, I'd have said you were nuts. But, I really do enjoy the plow day videos. I plowed with an M pulling 2 sixteens, a Farmall 400 (with TA) pulling 3 sixteens and a John Deere sixty pulling two fourteens and a clod buster. I liked plowing and discing better than field cultivating. Tractor ride was a lot easier on the body. I haven't plowed anything since 1967. I did not look forward to cultivating, at all. After the first few hundred thousand corn plants I pretty much knew what the next one was going to look like!

Didn’t get much time plowing as a kid, dad did that during the week. Then when I’d come on the weekends all that’s left was to disc. Now I got my own lil field and starting to get lil time with a plow behind a model A John Deere 1st plow I used was a rope trip 2 bottom JD then next was a 3 bottom hydraulic lift. Found out the model A pulled the 3 bottom better in 3rd gear over 2nd. The more I turn dirt the more I learn an get better at it and kinda fun doing it too

There's the joke about the city slicker who thought he knew everything about engines. When the farmer started the old John Deere and took it out of the shed, the kid listened to it for a few seconds, then told the farmer "I think there's something wrong with your tractor, it's only running on two cylinders." The farmer looks over and replies "I sure hope so son, I sure hope so."

Good day from Ontario. Ploughing deeper gives more topsoil, also water drains quicker & on dry roots can go down deeper. also ploughing u watch dandelions will come up there quicker because that is not plough, ground thrown over. It is OK though. Your 3 furrow is that narrow points Boy those stones on dad's farm were a bugger. We had a stone pile about 6 ft. high. U know there is alot of minerals & topsoil on them piles Thanks good nice ploughing

That old pull type harrow reminds me of one I bought from an old man who was our neighbor when I was 13 years old (I am 64 now) for five dollars. My Dad had a little 240 IH with the two point hitch that was his garden tractor. Boy did I think I was big timing it when I hooked that 240 to it and plowed the garden spot. Could only go in a race track fashion but I got it done. Then came the two row Covington planting rig. God that seems like a lifetime ago...

We would pull a rotary hoe section off the right side of a plow to even out the freshly turned soil. This would avoid another tillage trip through some fields such as prior year soybean or prior year corn fields. This also helped save some soil moisture which was necessary in our area (Chippewa County, MN, 1950s & 1960s). I would have liked to have been part of your plow day with the Super M-TA gas tractor and 3-16 plow combination of my day.

This reminds me of a story. When IH came out with the 1206 model my older brother was working for an IH dealership. He and the dealership owner had gone out with a 1206 and plow to demo for a farmer. On the way back, they passed another farmer who had several different new tractor brands plowing and showing off their tractors and plows. They stopped and asked the farmer if he would like to see the 1206 since they were right there. The farmer said he would like to see it operate. They unloaded the 1206 and pulled in in front the John Deere tractor that was part of the demo. The dealer had turned up the pump on the 1206 and installed some M&W parts in the pump to increase the horsepower (he was shooting for 200 hp, got close but never made 200). So after a couple of rounds, the dealer told my brother "Watch this". He started moving the draft control lever down until the plow was plowing about 18" deep instead of the 10" that everyone was plowing. The 1206 lost about 100 rpm and just kept going. The John Deere hit the deeper furrow and almost stalled. They had to stop and shift down in order to keep going. Thanks for the video. Interesting to see the older tractors and plows. The "A" sure did a nice job. It would have been interesting to have each tractor and plow have their own set of furrows so that it would be easy to compare the results. Even a few rounds with them being the only 1 plowing at a time.
