Sprigging my Lawn with Bermuda | How to Sprig a Lawn

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Sprigging Iron Cutter Bermuda is what we're doing in today's video. This is the final step of this lawn renovation, where I'm converting part of my tall fescue lawn to an Iron Cutter Bermuda lawn. In this video I take you from harvesting the bermuda sprigs from the field at Heartland Sod Farm in Columbia, IL to spreading them in my lawn. This is part of a mini series where I am making several episodes documenting this entire process. If you want to see what all I have done to prepare my lawn for the sprigs, check out this playlist:

Sprigging is how we establish Hybrid Tifton Bermuda grass because with a Hybrid the seed are sterile, and the field is to be harvested to sell as Baled hay, We have a digger exactly like the one you show but the planter is made to open a small trench, the planter flips the sprigs in the trench, where two disk type furrow fillers cover the sprigs followed by a tire to pack the dirt..... We also use a roller to smooth the surface, so harvesting equip can move faster,,,, We do Acres not Square Feet..... Sprigging a field usually takes 2 years before a respectable amount of hay can be harvested.......

This was by far the easiest step for this whole reno so far because I had help and because we weren't moving heavy material, like sand, or digging trenches. Thank you for watching!

I'm over in Jefferson City, with a beautiful fescue lawn. After my battle with common bermuda, I have conflicting emotions about seeing you intentionally growing Bermuda in your lawn. That being said, I am excited for you and looking forward to seeing the transformation.

I was torn about killing off the fescue at the beginning of the year because it looked great but then I reminded myself of how awesome the Bermuda is going to look with much less inputs from fertilizer, fungicides, and water compared to the tall fescue. I made a common Bermuda patch look awesome, when I lived in Valley Park, MO. I too am excited to watch this transformation. Thank you for watching!

Maybe I just don't get it but... ARE YOU NUTS?! I watched a couple of your videos when you first moved in and you were soil testing and tweeking your lawn. That was the most beautifully lush, uniform green lawn I've ever seen. Most anyone would die to have a lawn like that. So, it confounds me to no end wondering why you're doing what you're doing now. Whatever it is, good luck to ya.

I can see why you would question me renovating this area of my lawn but in order to keep the tall fescue looking as good as it did for most of the season it required a lot of inputs with fungicides, water, and fertilizer. Switching to this elite iron cutter bermuda will allow me to keep the lawn looking a lot nicer at a lower cost because I won't need to apply fungicides on it and it also requires less water and fertilizer. Thank you for watching!

I wonder if a thin layer of sand over the sprigs after rolling, would help hold moisture or smother the sprigs.
