What is a qualified spray painter!!? As a custom bike painter I would not paint my toiler seat with anything that comes in a spray can. Spray can paints are junk - PERIOD. There are no reducers or activators added at the time of application and therefore you know what is in there is junk. If there was any doubt - try spray high grade automotive paint from a properly atomizing gun and see what happens to the spray can goo. Instantly dissolves it. The spray can junk doesn't perform well at all and if it looks the same as it did a year after applied its a miracle. 3 years later you want to shoot yourself because now you have to strip that crap off since you cannot paint on top of it. Way to go to save a buck. Even a harbor freight paint gun atomizes infinitely better than any can. And thankfully you can now apply 2 stage and 3 stage proper paints not to mention 2K filler primers etc.. There's a reason proper paint costs money. Most of them have lifetime warranties and there's absolutely no way no how ever you will get spay paint to look anything like the general ball park of a good automotive painter and I can prove that all day long. Its night and day.. crystal clear glass finish clear coat or even matte finishes don't come from spray cans.. ever. They take a boat load of talent experience and the requisite quantities of high grade acrylic enamels.

Chris Stratton Wow. Bad day? These videos don’t claim that spray cans and spray guns yield the same results. I’m not sure if it was in this video or in Part 1, but he does make the point that he feels spray guns are the way do go and are his first choice. He also makes the point that if you’re planning to paint something large (like a car) that you can buy an inexpensive gun, compressor and paint for about the same amount as you’d pay for all the cans of paint you’ll need. In that case, he says, go with the gun. The target audience for these videos aren’t professionals like yourself. You guys already know how to paint with good results. CSM’s videos show lay people like me how to sand, prep and spray correctly for a good result. They’re very helpful for guys like me.

Best paint from a can ive ever used on wheels is rustoleum trim and bumper paint. Its a matte black that holds up so well to the elements. I sprayed my subarus alloys 2yrs ago 3 coats sanded to 320 an no primer. It looks great still and doesnt chip or flake at all even through the new england winters.

Great and very helpful video. Thank you! Exactly today I've painted the bumper cover (plastic) and although 3 layers of primer laid down perfectly (as was seemed to the eye), the black paint over prime immediately started to give effect, where in very small areas, the paint just didn't want to lay. This made me very nervous, I did layer over layer, still same effect. At the end I let it all dry, and clearcoated (3 layers). Very disappointing. To correct this (to repaint) should i do all from beginning, starting sand paper, or could be enough to try to spray again black (and then clear coat)?

You you go to artprimo or bombing science you can purchase caps for spray cans that will alter the fan of the paint. I recommend “fat caps” as the best way to spray paint is take your time apply very light coats every few minutes and build it up. Very time consuming and costly on large surfaces though.

I enjoy your vids and learn a lot from them. But I'm surprised to see the small circular pattern from the Duplicolor tip. Might be different there but here in the U.S. I use that paint because of it's durable finish and the blue tip with the wire pushrod gives a nice wide fan pattern. Plus, in my opinion, it's the most comfortable to use. Years ago Rustoleum switched from the blue tip to one they call the "comfort" tip. It's anything but comfortable!

getting a paint job as good with bombs as a gun is not really alot of work. But for the cost you can buy a compressor air scrubber and a decent gun for the cost of the bombs. Considering your 12-16 oz can only has about 4-5 oz of actual primer/paint or clear lol. To do a whole car and look quality is very $$$$$...learned that lesson when I was 13 and painted my old ford ranger.

I've got an alu bike frame, i've sanded it down to bare aluminium and here's my thought process for what to do, please correct me if i'm wrong. I sand it to 400 to remove the rougher grooves Apply etch primer scuff it up with 800 wipe it down with motip degreaser apply my black basecoat scuff it up again, wipe it down, apply masking tape apply my blue metallic in the area i want then wipe it down and apply clear. This is correct? Or, do i need something else than a black basecoat for the blue metallic? Should i lay down some silver or other bright color and mask slightly inside this to create a barrier between the black and blue? Am i on the right path? yes it's a diy-rattle can job. I'm so scared to start.

If you used to do "public art" you know that you don't have to depend on the cap that came with the can. You can buy individual caps....or at least you used to. The german caps used to have the widest spray but you did need to know how far to keep the spray to prevent drip.

I'm pretty sure Rust-oleum has straight-on plastic paint. And now that I saw this video, I really have to redo the tailpipe on my daily driver. I don't want to put a tip on, and I stupidly clearcoated it before I let the enamel base cure. Uncured base on a hot exhaust = instant clearcoat failure.

As a finish color, over sanded primer, has anyone sprayed Rust-Oleum Matte Hammered Black #300607 for 2 medium coats, and finished it with two medium-light coats of Rust-Oleum metallic dark or navy blue? I want to have the hammered texture, but I can't find metallic hammered dark blue paint available anywhere. So I thought this would do. Both colors would be Rust-Oleum brand paints of same type. I'd apply each coat about 20 minutes apart in the shade of an open carport so each layer wouldn't be entirely dry, but not wet either.

I'd like to spray can paint on my wheel arches to match the car's color, currently it's matte, I believe it's got some protective paint on it. Please advise on how I could paint my wheel arches.

I think you have figured it out by now. But in case you haven't. Try sanding it down first. There are plenty of videos on you tube about doing rims or arches.

What's the best way to protect clear coat from UV attack?

I'd say let it dry a month before washing it. Then apply something like f11 to it. Or another high quality synthetic wax. The clear costs job is to protect from uv damage but these new synthetic waxes are amazing like the commercial I sprayed my hood and the bottle slid right off. One of the few finishing products worth the money. I say wait a month because you want all the solvent vented away. If solvent is trapped under wax it will bubble up

Try a small electric room heater. I suppose being 2 years ago when you asked, you probably have it figured out by now.

so if I were to paint my engine cover or callipers I wouldn't need high temp paint? I don't believe it but would love to hear what you have to say :)

Musik4soul777 for an engine cover you don't need high temp paint. Callipers for a road car you can use any auto paint. Callipers for a track car. Use 2K auto paint.

Cant you just change the tips on the cans? Total noob here, but I know some cans have interchangeable nozzles.

Elias Bargee most cans do, sometimes in shaking the can and the cap falls off, it's funny but it doesn't do any harm either I just put it back
