SPRAY CERAMIC WITH TRUE CERAMIC RESULTS? Testing Jimbos Hard as Shell

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

If you're looking for Ceramic Results but are afraid of the application, then there are some sprayable options on the market. They arent as good as a full blown ceramic coating, but they are much easier to apply. They may not have the same longevity, but since they are so easy to use, you can keep the longevity by reapplying. Well, Jimbo from the Auto Detailing Podcast has just release a new Ceramic Spray called Hard As Shell and Im seeing some pretty impressive results. The water behavior on my test panel looked like a true full ceramic coating. I still need to do more testing, but here are my initial impressions... ENJOY!

    Good for Jimbo and his new products. I tend to lose intrest in channels when they "create" their own products. The new direction of the channel is to push their products. Absolutely nothing wrong with that. It is just different then what i liked about his channel. Good for him though in taking a risk and moving to grow.

    I have had his product for about three weeks now and have put it on two customer cars as well as my wife's brand new baby Bronco. I have used The Last Coat, Turtle Wax Ceramic Spray and Sundays Best. Jimbos Hard as Shell is amazing. So easy to use and immediate slickness and gloss. This is my new go to.

    I don’t like bashing people but jimbo did that a lot with other people’s products and really bashed a well know detailer “saying there product sucked”. His is subpar at best and the price point is not worth it at all. So many other products to use that are clearly better. The stuff don’t last two weeks on a car in Florida.

    Hood was probably heavily contaminated as it's a horizontal panel and things can land and sit/bake in easily. Maybe try a decon wash, iron/tar removal and clay to half of the hood. Then reapply and see in time if it was just some fallout preventing the product from bonding well.

  • @epattonm
    @epattonm3 ай бұрын

    Seems quite similar to Blue Collar 3 (BC3) from Apex Detail. Personally, I've noticed that these spray coatings tend to fail on horizontal surfaces first. My suspicion is that it has to do with heat or UV exposure.

    The only thing you did differently to the hood is spraying it when it was wet maybe it left a poorly bonded coating, and the dry one bonded to that which eventually came off sooner than the panels that had a single application when it was dry

    Honestly, I prefer the spray and rinse when it comes to spray type of coatings. Wet Coat is by no means a coating but a sealant. But it’s so easy to use. It beads up like a coating would and offers enough protection between washes. Durability wise it’s obviously not as good but with Bathe+ it’s a win.

    I've seen some of Jimbo's older stuff back in the days, and he had sort of a dishonest characteristic about him. There were some old heads that gave him advice and he ignored. He continued on to be more of a marketer and less of an enthusiast. However, fast forward to now I think he's grown a lot and has taken feedback pretty well. Even some of the videos on his channel aren't biased just because he released his own product. The most recent one was on Meguiars M888. Given that, I think he's earned the shot at redemption for people to give his stuff a try at least.

    @@imjoshv definitely possible especially since we know the hood is the hottest spot on the car so everything gets baked on there hence why a normal wash was good enough for the rest of the car but not the hood since all the contamination has gotten backed and built up tho to the “naked eye” it looks the same Excited to see the retest and and the update on the customer car Was going to do the Adams coating spray on my “winter beater”. Also I’m planning to take this “winter beater “ on a trip from Oregon down to Cali. I dont know how busy or how far in advance I would need to set something up but would love to get it washed/detailed once I get down to Cali

    Your truck was no coated. The hood needed to decontaminated it has buildup it will not sheath water much less bead it. That happens much more on horizontal surfaces like the hood, roof, and especially trunk. You were trying to be nice using a ph neutral wash. However, that light cleaning did not remove hood buildup of residue. You were concerned removing the coating with an aggressive cleaner. You were being nice in your review because an alkaline or acidic wash can remove everything by decontaminating the surface. I would have to read the product label to see what the product goals are. Based on your video I would classify it as a topper. I would then test it for two things. Longevity and does it attract or repel dust. Some toppers give spectacular gloss and slickness but are dust magnets. I have yet to find the perfect topper.

  • @imjoshv

    @@imjoshv thanks for the reply. Let me explain better why I have still not found a perfect topper. At the beginning of your video you showed a dark coated vehicle that honestly I could not tell the difference visually between with or without the coating. For that vehicle I would recommend a topper that was great against dusting and lasts longer. On dark vehicles you can sacrifice gloss as your video shows. Anyone who has tried a lot of products knows some toppers are dust magnets but give great gloss and slickness. Usually the durability is lacking. That same topper may be a better choice for a white or grey car that needs more gloss to make those colors pop. White and grey cars hide dusting. So some of the descriptions I look out for in a topper are: durability, gloss, slickness, dusting, application, beading, and sheathing. That’s what I want to hear you talk about in your reviews. Keep up the good work and more importantly don’t turn into an expert at advertising.

    I’m more interested in his cleaner than coating tbh. Although the price per gallon is too high for me to try it and there’s no way I’m paying $20 for a watered down 16oz. There are plenty of other products that work amazing for far cheaper. $35 for a spray coating is quite steep consider what the competition is bringing with wipe on coatings now. Ethos’ ezpz is $60 and goes on sale from time to time for a coating that is as easy to apply as a spray on. I recently applied it to an entire vehicle before leveling with two microfiber towels with no high spots or streaks. It took like 15 minutes total. I can’t imagine hard as shell will outperform it in any aspect. Personally I think jimbo gets in his own head something’s ignoring product lines. Sure some of the bigger names make lame products but there are tons of awesome ones out there that work exactly as described. He always talks about how companies can’t create unique products but immediately came out with a spray coating. If his products are quality I can’t complain too much, but his prices are too high and if he talks poorly of others for the same reasons then I’m not sure how far he’ll get.

    It probably can't handle a lot of heat as the hood gets most of the direct heat from the sun and the engine it probably breaks down faster. $30 for it bit expensive you'll get better results from turtle wax ceramic spray for $15
