Also baloney. here;s no science to support the claims of the product. It's not "ceramic", just a silicone liquid polish. When the liquid carrier evaporates, the silicone being not water soluble stays behind. For a tiny fraction of the cost Maguilars Paint Protect does the same job, easier and as durable..

i have been saying it for years and years and you sir have proved my point. Now as a mobile detailer, i still enjoy the use of wax and sealants and a yearly polish to client's car but what i have been noticing is the huge trend of ceramic coatings but consumers do not truly understand what a ceramic coating is, how much it cost for installation and lastly them thinking it's a one time maintenance free thing and it's all good. I have come across a lot of new clients this year that were acting so anal about their car because they said it was ceramic coated but when i saw their vehicles in the sunlight i had to bring them outside and show them the truth. Their ceramic coating was swirled, marred and just did not present the glorious shine it once had. I washed their vehicles and did an iron decon and even washed with a ceramic boost and there was zero water beading. Turns out that they had been taking the car to a regular car wash and then they were so confused at when i told them why the water beading and protection properties had faded so quickly. If a client is not going to stick to a committed maintenance for ceramic coating then i will not provide it and i also will not provide ceramic coating to clients that park their vehicles outdoor 24/7 because the coating wears out even faster especially vehicles that are parked under trees. Great video. If you ask me, ceramic coatings can be great but i do not think they are worth the hefty price tag for a daily driver.

Wouldn’t a coating be the best option for a customer that has to park outdoors? If they’re going to have it maintained regularly but they have to park outside, why wouldn’t you want to talk to them about a coating to help against oxidation and uv damage?

Ceramic coating is better for a daily driver parking outside 24/7 especially when the owner washes the car every 2 weeks & uses a ceramic detailer every 2 or 3 months, when you parked outside ceramic is the most appropriate to use because its the most durable paint protection out of all others..just my 2 cent

@@renogunzddragon1900 you are right in that sense but my argument here is that 8 out of 10 clients are not going to purchase ceramic quick detailer or even bother to use the washing techniques I teach them to maintain the ceramic coating. You'll be surprised but a lot of people are not willing to put in the effort to maintain the ceramic coating

Three years ago, I had my 2013 black Harley Ultra Limited with over 100,000 miles professionally paint-corrected and ceramic coated. I was shocked at how great the paint looked when I picked the bike up roughly a week later. Swirl marks are gone, and it almost looks wet. Over three years later, it still looks fantastic, and as you said, it is so easy to wash. Here is the only bad part. It cost me $1500 to have the bike properly cleaned, prepped, and protected. He told me it should last five years. Only time will tell.

Awesome! I think you did the right thing. Keep taking care of it and follow the detailers recommendations regarding maintenance and whether any topper (ceramic sprays) should be applied. If it doesn’t last, go back to the detailer. Most professionally applied coatings come with a guarantee and often they just need a reset wash to help rejuvenate the coatings protective properties.

I brought it to him before I put it away this winter to be cleaned and inspected. He charged me $150 to I think steam clean and it came back spotless. Even the wheels and under the bike looked like new. The bike now has 163,000 miles and it still looks as good as the day I picked it up.@@Bruce-Weinberg

@@kerrylewis2581 People looking at this thinking $1500 for a Motorcycle that is car cost territory. Mike Phillips, who many consider, one of the best detailers in the country has said he detailed one motorcycle and that was one too many. They are not easy to do properly. It sounds like whoever did yours did a great job so don't think of that is the only bad part. I'd love to see pictures if you have any.

A professional paint correction doesn't have swirl marks.

Thank you so much for this detailed primer on ceramic coatings. I have been detailing my own personal cars (and for others professionally as a very young man) for more than five decades. I've been curious about ceramic coatings but always sensed that the prep work and application might be a chore ...at least for me. Your video helped me make a decision that indeed ceramic is not for me. I love waxing my cars and doing it every 3 months or so, whether it's with a carnauba/polymer blend wax or better still topping that with a fine quality carnauba wax . I'll stick with the routine I know best and that continues to not only protect my vehicles but give me results that still turn heads and get lots of compliments. And not least, truly enjoy. I used Gyeon Leather Shield. It was easy to apply; I did get a few high spots, so probably be careful to make sure you are applying evenly and then follow directions to level the coating so it is spread evenly.

Good luck!! You can do this on your own, remember prep is the most important step. If you don’t want to do a full ceramic, I do recommend Gyeon Can Coat. It works really well and is easy. Same prep, but you put one spray on a microfiber and wipe. Gloss is decent and will give you good protection (6 months - 1 year).

Bruce, I have a beautiful candy-apple red which the previous owner of my 1984 BMW 318i had done. I have experienced terrible oxidation of my red 1972 Jaguar XJ6 and want to do all I can to prevent this on my car. What sealant would best protect my beautiful red finish? Is that what UV protection is all about? Thanks much.

Great video. I just ceramic coated my 4th car. It truly is a joy to wash a car that’s been ceramic coated. A 15 minute wash and the car looks freshly waxed every time

I recently bought a car with the ceramic coating on it that I negotiated nit paying for but having it on I have to admit it is pretty damn nice! I do wash it with a ceramic booster wash and applied a spray on booster once a year. This thing shines like no other car I’ve owned, water beading is amazing and on the windshield in light rain I don’t need my wipers.

For now. I’m glad you’re happy but it doesn’t last. Any non pure water will leave water spots over time as ceramic coating attracts minerals. Great I to then to proper wash and maintenance if you fell in love as your cars could be like that forever. Enjoy the hobby

This vid is very comprehensive! I would on why SIO2 is not for you: if you detail your car often and park in a garage frequently. Also, if you apply SIO2 yourself you may waste a lot of MF because dries silica doesn't come out very easily. Also, some SIO2 are more forgiving than others. You have to know what you're doing or it it's fairly common to get high and low spots which can be difficult to fix. It's not like you can take it all off and try again.

Thank you for watching. I’ve not experienced water spots with a coating (assuming the coating is applied on a water spot free surface). The coating will help and if you get water spots it should be a bit easier to remove.

I've personally done ceramic/graphene coatings to about 4 of our personal cars over the last few years. I do like it, but I've been finding some drawbacks. As mentioned, it is very labor intensive depending on the size and condition of the vehicle. 3 of the cars I've done it on were brand new, so it wasn't too bad (and none of them were particularly large), but one car was used and, even though it was in very good condition, that took more work as I had to do a two step paint correction process. The biggest issue I'm finding now is that the latest car I did a coating on sits outside as we don't have room for it in the garage and it is one of our daily drivers. You'd think that this would be perfect for a ceramic coating, except that I get horrible water spotting (sometimes even from dew in the morning). I knew ceramic coatings were susceptible to this so I even went with a graphene coating on this particular car (which is supposed to help alleviate some of these issues), but it doesn't seem to matter. While it's not like these are etching into the paint, it means that the car looks pretty terrible after even the slightest bit of moisture. This past Sunday I spent over 8 hours giving it a good after-winter cleaning, and there was some dew on it when I left for work on Monday. It didn't rain all day, but when I left work to go home the car was covered with little dirt marks where the water had evaporated on the coating. It's pretty frustrating to put all that time and effort in just have it look like I didn't do anything less than 24 hours later. I think on my next car (which will be a fun weekend car which will be in the garage when not in use) I'm going to go back with a traditional wax. Not only is it easier in terms of prep work, but I can easily remove it to try out different waxes/sealants without having to re-polish the car to remove a coating. I also think I might prefer the look a good wax gives over a coating. Finally, I enjoy cleaning and detailing my cars, so putting on a new coat of wax every few months is actually something I'll enjoy.

I've a 10 year old car parked in the UK outdoors and have been thinking about a ceramic coating but I think now I'll just do it the old fashioned ways. Might try on my alloys though as anything that'll help the pain of cleaning those will really help...

I really enjoyed your video good job! I really enjoy maintaining my car (Black 2009 MB SL550), I do my own paint correcting and polishing (nothing like a good carnauba wax). My skepticism with Ceramic Coatings is how do you know when it is no longer effective, and if the coat the entire car the ware of the elements will likely not be even since the top surfaces of the car gets the most UV ray exposure? With waxing you know because you can visually see the difference, any insight would be appreciated.

Thanks for watching and I appreciate your comment! I’ve found the ceramic coating will usually continue to show great hydrophobics when water is applied. However, the loss of beading/sheeting of water doesn’t mean the coating is bad, it may need a reset wash to restore its full protection. Coatings will have a reported typical life span which can also serve as a guide. But just as with wax, you only can assess its performance. But a well maintained coating, one that is washed appropriately and periodically topped with a maintenance spray, you can expect it to last. Regardless, there is nothing wrong with a good waxing. What’s most important is that it sounds like you are really caring for your car! Nice 👍🏻

I hate applying them. I have to use tham at work and I'm absolutely hopeless with them. Smears, lines, and high spots everywhere. I've tried everything - for four years to no avail. At least I try, the other tech just wipes it on and wipes it off, then goes over it with a spray wax because the coating never had a chance to bond. So people will uave a car where one half looks great, but no protection, and the other looks horrible but beads like crazy. In my home operation, I've used Optimum Gloss Coat to great effect. Ceramic is the only way to go if you're going through a car wash. One of my clients did that, and to my surprise it protected the paint underneath it. It was an Audi A5 and the paint was tough as nails. When I did the polish after the coating, I could see the tell tale wash marring, but it corrected so much easier. To me, ot looks like the coating did it's job. At work, the first time I did a passable job on a ceramic coating was a Aston Martin DB11. I had to use that horrible Ceramic Pro 9H and Top Coat. Horrible. That was September of 2020. That car comes in with pieces of car wash brush cloth that was torn from the hub. We put the light on it - very low to no wash marring. I let my clelients go for it.

Hey, I used to use carnauba waxes, because it maintained paint somewhat soft with it's natural oils, does a ceramic coating does that for paint too? Or are we slowly killing paint

Thanks for watching. To my knowledge, ceramic doesn’t have those types of properties. It’s more of a hard shell. Carnuba waxes are good, they are simply not as durable. But if you prefer, continue using.

So are the spray-on ceramic coatings basically an addition or replacement for waxing, i.e., they need to be applied regularly as a maintenance process after regular washing ?

Very short term benefit, for the most part. Gyeon Can Coat isn’t bad as a spray, but overspray is a challenge. There is nothing wrong with a good wax, it simply doesn’t have the durability of a properly applied true ceramic. Once you wash a car that is ceramic coated, it’s hard to go back. I'd say a quality spray ceramic product, done every 3 months or so works well. The properties of the coating aren't forever so you maintain it every so often.

I also agree with maintaining your vehicle you take the extra time after a dural wash and clay another layer of protect is added. Do not worry about scratches forming on the paint but make sure the paint is well protected every 3 to 6 months.

I spoke with a body shop owner and he said its difficut to remove when attempting to blend in a panel.

Yvan LaCroix mentioned that two mils of paint need to be removed to fully remove the ceramic coating. So, it makes sense.

Question regarding one of your later comments regarding waxing a car instead of ceramic coating it. I was just curious what you think of instead of waxing using a ceramic spray coating? I understand the concern is that it is not as long lasting, but it certainly would outlast the waxes that are out there typically used. Just curious what your thoughts are. Thanks

I would suggest Gyeon Can Coat. It’s a decent spray based ceramic that will last up to a year. I’ve used this and it was easy to apply and provided good protection with high gloss.

I’d suggest reaching out to some local Detailer’s to see what they offer. Let them know the car is new and you’d like ceramic coating. They will likely have a brand they use - most have been certified to professionally install a certain brand. Ask what’s included, the warranty details, cost, and what requirements are necessary for maintenance. Then you can decide how to proceed. It won’t be cheap - because of all the prep work (even on a new car). But hopefully it only requires minimal paint correction/polish (1 step) vs an older car maybe needing more correction to reduce scratches, etc. If you decide not to go with ceramic, you can always apply a good ‘ole wax and do that a couple of times/year for paint protection. @judyandhuggins The actual application process is fairly short and that time doesn’t seem unreasonable. However, I’d have two potential concerns: 1) No clay bar assumes there is no need to decontaminate the paint. That might be true, but also new cars, particularly those that have traveled by rail or have been sitting outside at a dealer or factory may have paint contamination. Second, mobile detailers can only apply the coating while outdoors. While not impossible to do, you always run the risk of dirt/dust contaminating during the application process. Lastly, most coatings (I’m not intimately familiar with System X) can’t be exposed to rain for 24-48 hours and shouldn’t be washed for 7 days. A lot of detailers will keep the vehicle garaged for you until the initial cure is completed (~24 hours). So I’d at least ask about that - System X may be different, as there are some coatings that can be exposed to the elements shortly after application.

Free instructional videos can be a waste of time, THIS 1 is not. No hype, no short cuts, down the line. Do it or dont, this will help and help a lot. My advice, if u are a car enthusiast, yeh, set the time aside and do it yourself NOT SO pay a detailer to do a high end spray wax semi regular? 3? times a yr. Then buy some gear and wash and use a topper ( hi end silicon wash & wax ) as needed or bring him/her/they back for that. Bless ur '24

This is a first for me! How long has it been on the surface? While a ceramic coating is designed to protect against contamination like this, it is not infallible if left in the surface. It will eventually eat through the coating layer. It may need to be polished off and then recoated in the impacted area.

what are your thoughts on what to use on a car with ppf, do you use any coating or ceramic coating specifically for ppf? i ppf is porous and I am getting mixed reviews from people online. Just use any vs specifically for ppf

I tried CarPro Skin, but it didn't seem to be doing the job. I'm probably not applying it correctly. I polished it off with Optimum Hyper Polish, and applied their ceramic coating (Gloss Coat), which was on the rest of the vehicle and it's been doing a great job.

I like to go through the touchless carwash? What's the down side of that?

The downside is that for a touchless wash to be effective, it must use strong (highly alkaline) chemicals to remove dirt. Eventually this will diminish the effectiveness and wear down the ceramic coating.

PPF is usually a bit longer, but ceramic can be several years (some are 5+). PPF is much more expensive as well if you do a whole car

On high end cars, PPF is often used on those more vulnerable (to rock chips) areas such as hood, bumper, and front fenders. A well applied PPF wrap is unnoticeable unless you are really close to the car and then it still can be hard to see.

Generally waxing over a ceramic coating is not recommended. Using a ceramic topper occasionally is considered a better practice as it enriches the coating itself and is compatible.

Agree 1000%… people are LAZY and want the one n done solution to everything in life. The reality: it’s all about good washing technique and MAKING time to do it properly. My 370z looks absolutely amazing - but - it was a 3 day process to do it the right way. People just see a shiny car and slap it with a “wow must be a new car” label - when they don’t realize it’s 1000% about making it a priority to take care of. $85,000 vehicles and people will say to themselves: I will “just” spend $9 on an automatic car wash because I “just” would rather use my time elsewhere… And then…. A year later: “I don’t understand why this car paint is so bad!?” Blame blame blame blame. Car paint is EXTREMELY fragile. I am lost an amazed that people absolutely refuse to grasp this concept. It’s WAY easier to take car of the car up front rather than put oneself in a bad situation where it needs a ton of work to bring back to life… $85,000 cars in the “mac” donalds drive thru…. But that’s a different video 🤣🤣🤣

But why don't new cars ship from the factory with a ceramic coating?

Cost? Plus, I’m not sure it would be worth the investment as many people are not even aware of ceramic coatings nor are interested in maintaining. Plus, most would not want something installed by the manufacturer or dealer (by the way….always avoid dealer installed ceramic as they are generally subpar quality). Thanks for watching!

How about the newer class of Ceramic coating that boast NOT hardness rather FLEXIBILITY such as Revivify? It seems that the newer cars for cost efficiency have thinner PAINT the last 10 years. Thinner paint creating a MARKET for these forms of coating. Now a newer generation claiming FLEXIBILITY vs HARDNESS.

I don't use ceramic coating. I choose to protect each time I wash. Great video

Here’s the facts. No one should be allowed a ceramic coating if you cannot apply it yourself anyways. If you can’t apply the ceramic and polish the car. You have no real business putting it on. Because they will mar the paint anyways. Not wash it. Not maintain it. It’s a waste of their money. It will look great for a few months and then get the pores clogged. Nothing needed beyond a 2 year polish and a cheap sealant once a year. That’s like someone asking for a coating on the bottom of your new Nikes 😂

@@Bruce-Weinberg for a person who actually enjoys detailing a vehicle; ceramic takes away the enjoyment of buffing & polishing which is a skill... It's like art... I'm not against ceramic coatings that protect the clear coat, but it's just not as personal as buffing, polishing, and waxing.... As far as making a windshield hydrophobic and making plastic trims look amazing or coating your head lights ceramic is great but I actually like to wash the car and would rather polish than coat...
