I think our definitions of "indie" productions, are quite diferent, Spotlight budget was of 20 million, director Tom McCarthy, you can go ahead and tell, the productors this and that, still a Hollywood production, you can call it independent, still the movie was sold to us the same way Mad Max was sold to us, or any other Hollywood blockbusters, and the cast and crew DOES matter, let's say, for the sake of argument, that I directed a movie as good as spotlight, only, I would be the director, the cast are friends, they deliver an even better performance than the cast of Spotlight, my uncle who's the writer makes it even better, all of that under the budget of, let's say 50,000 dls, obviously an independent production, would it have won best picture? FUCK NO, but let's say I direct a fucking shit movie, but DiCaprio happens to be in it, and I happen to be Scorses, WITH a Hollywood production, yeah, I think I got my point down. Rustin Cohle

Just saw this film for the 3rd time last night. I may have preferred The Big Short, Mad Max: Fury Road, and The Revenant to win more. I may have been more entertained by The Martian and emotionally devastated by Room. I may have marveled at the subtle mastery of recapturing eras long gone in Brooklyn and Bridge of Spies. But Spotlight...this victory is for the journalists who worked tirelessly and in often unsexy environments to bring justice to real-life stories that deserved to be told and known. *What a fantastic end to the cinema of 2015!*

Today, exactly three years later since the award, I finally saw this picture. The movie at first seemed to progress slow to a point that i started falling asleep. but then as the story evolved, so did my attention: it was a crime that many people knew about and that their kids may have gone through, it was big yet hidden. It was monstrous yet no one had been made responsible. But in the end justice won with the help of professional and devoted journalists... Of all the other nominees that were truly greatful as well, I strongly approve of the decision to award Best Picture to Spotlight. Why? Because, being a global-scale sad reality of what has been going on for years, decades, centuries, it was finally made public. And this movie has made a real-life impact and brought about change - at least in people's minds. My salute to the journalists who made this happen!

Even taking that aside this film is dope, the acting, script and writing is astonishing to my eyes. The soundtrack is incredible also. From the start with that opening scene with the piano score (gave me goosebumps) you know it will be a great film. A fine piece of cinematography to be remembered for years and perhaps decades. Yeah, the topic helped too for spotlight being such a success. The other nominees were just not on the level of this imho.

@@ronaldmcdonald2817 disagree, it's the opposite. Spotlight has more powerful message in the film than The Revenant. Also look at the Oscar campaign, The Revenant was mostly focused on the majority of its efforts on Leo's performance in which people are mostly praising at him alongside with Tom Hardy more than the movie itself and he totally deserved that Oscar while Spotlight was mostly campaigning for the movie itself on persuading influential people to watch it and continuing the efforts of the child abuse protests that energised the film in the first place. So technically Spotlight deserved it whether you like it or not. The Revenant was great, but Spotlight was the real winner

IT MADE sense that "Spotlight" won this year's Oscar for best picture. The movie, about the journalism that exposed a cover-up of abusive priests, is built around a topic that horrifies people, but one that needs to be explored so it won't happen again. It was a safe, if not worthy, pick. But despite what the academy told us, it wasn't the best film of 2015. That would be "Room." Where "Spotlight" spent too much time detailing the pursuit of justice and dedicated mere minutes to examining the horrors that led to that pursuit, "Room" immerses you for nearly two hours into the world of a young woman who was kidnapped and turned into a captive sex slave. It isn't just an examination of survival and escape, but the affects of living through a nightmare. And that is what makes "Room" such a remarkable movie: It forces us to stare at a few of our darkest fears, but has enough artifice and resolve to convince us that we can't turn away for even a moment.

You know, if I ever make a movie, I'd pray it gets nominated for Best Picture, but I'd pray even harder it doesn't win. Winning Best Picture is just about the most tragic thing that can happen to a movie. Even if the movie was critically acclaimed, it will receive an enormous backlash. People will call the movie overrated and start hating the movie because it beat their preferred movie, even though it's still the exact same fucking movie. And even if it doesn't beat any other treasured movies, people will still think it's overrated. It's like people think the producers paid the Oscar voters. It'd be better for a movie's reception if they just gave an Oscar to every single nominee. And no, The Revenant did not deserve to win at all, and I knew it wouldn't. It's entirely a visual movie. It was horribly written, and would be absolutely shit to watch on your phone. Spotlight was a masterpiece in every aspect. Everyone knew Spotlight would win Best Original Screenplay, so it would only make sense for that or The Big Short to win Best Picture. It makes absolutely no sense when a movie wins Best Picture but not Best Screenplay. A movie's story, dialogue and characters are 95% of what makes it good. And no movie has ever won Best Picture without even being nominated for Best Screenplay, that's also how I knew The Revenant wouldn't win.

+Mike Ock I don't mean to act like an elitist, but if you think movies are 95% about dialogue and writing, then you are missing a very key part of movies. The most powerful scenes in the Revenant were the ones that didn't involve any dialogue, the dream sequences which beautifully showcased man's connection with the natural world, arguably the entire theme of the movie. Some of the greatest films ever made are movies which rely far more on visual storytelling than storytelling through dialogue; 2001: A Space Odyssey, Solaris, The Tree of Life, Days of Heaven. And if movies are meant to be centered on writing and dialogue, then why the hell are movies like The Artist and Chicago so celebrated? Movies are not books, they do not have to tell their entire story through writing. Film is, at its core, a visual medium. And yes, of course, films must tell some kind of story, but the greatest ones are the ones that can use the visual medium to tell a story. Those are the movies that need to be celebrated. I agree with your statement about never wanting to win the best picture, though. Spotlight was phenomenal and even if it wasn't my favourite movie of the year, it certainly doesn't deserve the backlash it recieved.
