Spot Weld Method Test - Which is Superior?

Ғылым және технология

In this video we look into using two spot welding methods to put the nickel strips onto a cell. I did get a few comments about the way I used the spot welder in the last M18 pack build video. I held my welding leads close together on the same side of the nickel strip split instead of going across the split. I basically did this without much thought as I use solid strips 90% of the time myself. So this is my basic technique to get spot welds fairly close together for maximum current flow. The viewers of course are mentioning that the split allows the current to flow better into the cell case when it flows across the split. I have worked with packs for many years and I can see the point for sure. So I am wrong to use the solid strips as much as I do? Am I welding improperly by choosing close weld points over using across the split method? Now, the comments were not negative by any means they were simply trying to be helpful and I can appreciate that, lets find out together if one is really superior! Thanks for watching!

The slit nickel has sound science behind it. Looks like you understand the theory. Instead of the current taking the path of least resistance straight through the nickel (because the can is steel) by putting the slit you get the path of least resistance POSSIBLY being through the nickel and then through the can/positive cap. I notice a HUGE difference when doing 0.20mm pure nickel. I can do 0.20mm pure nickel on the middle or even only the 2nd power setting with the JQ and just an A123 4S8P pack. If the nickel has slits in it I can definitely get a better weld on the 2nd power setting and the middle setting is too much.

Very interesting. Always good to test rather than follow accepted wisdom. I wonder if the slits are something that seemed logical so they did it, and now everyone just goes along with it. Hard to compare as these low powered spot welders are likely very adversely affected by the increase in resistance. Might have to use a scope to measure the voltage pulse across the leads. I wonder how much current is actually going through to the base material. Maybe all the welding happens from heating the nickel. Could you try spot welding 2 seperate nickel strips so that all the current has to go into the stainless? Also do a solid strip of nickel bridging 2 pieces of stainless so that all the current is through the Nickel. Keep the distance between probes the same. Again the problem will be that the current will likely be much less when forced to go entirely through the stainless.

Yes, I am certain the split is beneficial to the process. They absolutely have much more current capabilities in manufacturing for sure. I am certain with the spacing the same it is better through the split for sure. I have always welded close together to get good welds in spite of inferior welders to the manufacturing process. I almost did a round of trying that exact idea that you shared above. Well, at least having 2 strips side by side and testing that way. I stopped since the video hit much longer than I meant for it to be. Lol. I thought this will take a few minutes. Then I had to struggle to get it under 12mins... Story of my KZread life.

The science behind it is sound..the problem is will that slit be enough of an in increase in the IR of the nickel strip to make going through the can the path of least resistance? Edit: and in practice it holds true. I can typically go down a power setting on the JQ and get an identical weld
