Sportswriter Rick Reilly: How Golf Explains President Trump

For decades, a range of authors have tried to explain who Donald Trump is, what makes him tick, and, since he has become president, what drives his political decision-making. Legendary sportswriter Rick Reilly thinks one of the best ways to understand who the 45th president of the United States really is as a person is to study how he golfs, a sport Reilly reveres.
In his new book, Commander in Cheat: How Golf Explains Trump, Reilly takes readers on an on-the-ground and behind-the-scenes look at Trump's ethics deficit on and off the course. Reilly has been with Trump on the fairway, the green and in the weeds and has seen firsthand how the president plays-and it's not pretty. Based on his personal experiences and interviews with dozens of golf pros, amateurs, developers, partners, opponents and even caddies who have firsthand experience with Trump on the course, Reilly takes a deep and often hilarious look at how Trump shamelessly cheats at golf, lies about it, sues over it, bullies with it and profits off of it.
Reilly, in conversation with beloved Bay Area sportswriter Joan Ryan, will outline a new and amusing way to think about the current president, his administration and one of the country's most popular sports.

I sooo agree! An ex boyfriend introduced me to the game way back in the dark ages. I was never into any sports but I instantly fell in love with golf! We played quite a bit for a few years & he told me how to cheat if I wanted to... I told him: "NO! How am I going to find out if I'm making progress? How good and/or bad I am? Come on! I want to learn & get really good for real! ! I'd feel like i'd be cheating on myself!" Needless to say, the ex boyfriend & I broke up shortly after. If you cheat at golf, what else do you cheat on. Right? 😊👍☘ Also, absolutely excellent interview. Lovely man, really funny, really genuine. ❤I bought his book, it's great! 😊❤We should have heard MUCH more from him sooner, regarding the disgraced former president... ☘

Just today, someone mentionned Trump only has golf, burgers and twitter. I told them to take off Golf because he doesn't play by the rules. But I didn't know the extent of it. My best friend in the world is both a Trump disciple and a golf devotee. I will show him this video and this is the ONLY thing that might change his mind about Trump. Because he knows that Golf is a sport of Gentlemen and is adamant about not cheating. He's also a HUGE Arnie fan and will likely very much appreciate the story about judging the man about how he behaves on the Golf course. I hope it will indeed matter to this one friend who has been such a disappointment to me about how he can't see through Trump. THANK YOU so much for writing the book!

Every single time that I hear a person that knows trump that as actually related with him on a personal basis it confirms the conclusions that I've come to on my own. I can read the guy like a book. After listening to this guy explain how Trumbo plays golf makes me convinced that I am right that he pumped up the vote totals somehow for his side. He was angry that he lost the popular vote in 2016 and he fixed that, or at least he tried to fix it. I remember clearly when he was talking about this one time that he said that he liked the voting machines in Texas. While the voting machines in Texas use the old ESS Diebold software called GEMS. This is the same software Bev Harris from blackbox voting found was using fractions for the tabulation. But in general usage in the fractions are hidden. So in essence you could make certain voters votes were worth only .75% and other voters worth 1.25%, or whatever you wanted those numbers to be. Apparently GEMS it is just basically an accounting program and you cannot edit out its ability to use fractions. This man will do anything that it takes to win, and so will his surrogates, and like I said they did not count on Democrat turnout. They thought that 9 million more votes than 2016 should be more than enough to get him the election. The reason this is important because this becomes election fraud, not voting fraud but election fraud. I know that this guy did not get more supporters during his term. He lost supporters, he hemorrhaged supporters! His rallies got smaller and smaller, he had to bus people into his rallies, he hired actors to make his rallies look bigger, all of these things were done to make his rallies look bigger than they actually were. Back in February of this year, it was discovered that the 50 million of trump those 72 million followers were fake Twitter followers fake Facebook profiles Unfortunately I'm just one little guy, who can't even get his representative to listen to him much less any authority that is going to be in charge of voting. But that's my two cents. You don't have to worry there are not 75 or 80 million trump supporters in this country. You could probably count the number and his followers by the number of Rush Limbaugh's audience which is right around 25 million people last time I checked. And out of that 25 million not all of them are fans so 20 million, 15 million? 29% of registered voters are identified as Republicans. There are something like a record number of registered voters this year like hundred and 60 million, now I am definitely not a math whiz, but 50% of the hundred and 60 million is going to be 80 million votes. Trumpo voters are proud of who they are and are not likely to be independent voters. People waited for hours to vote against this guy and very long lines. Most trump voters waited until the last minutes about like they were told to do. I did not see long lines of people waiting to vote for trump. Trumbo is also a projectionist. If he is pointing over there at a problem. He's pointing over there because he's covering up something. I really think there should be an audit of the states that use the Diebold /ESS software. Watch this video, listen to this guy, trump does not know how to play fair. He cheated in this election, but he just didn't cheat by enough..He definitely had the Russians helping him, as well as a few other countries. These people did not just give up and go away. Yet were not hearing anything about them. Trumpo handpicked head of Homeland Security, who he just fired, (gotta keep up appearances)said it was the [The safest most accurate election ever]. I'm going to guess that we didn't hear about them hacking the election this year because they had their own back door entrance given to them by the trumpo administration. 2+2 sill equals 4.

But I guess, u would need a star that big for American caddies to know the name and use it for a guy, who apparently uses his feet an awful lot at golf. Edit: I reread my comment and realised, it could be misunderstood. With "was" I didnt mean as in hes dead, coz hes still alive, 80 years old, I meant as in when he was playing. And while he retired, b4 I was old enough to see him play, Ive seen the old footage, and I also saw him play a charity game once, when he was like 60-65, with a team of old soccer stars, and he was still soooo outstanding to watch. I have no interest in golf, but after reading his book I understand why he loves it. It really is excellent, I recommend it to everyone, golfer or non-golfer. It's one of those books that either sits in the bathroom or you put aside for a year or so until it's slipped from the front of your mind and you read it again.

Holy Crap! That was fun. Also, that cross country runner story? Tearjerker. We had a guy on our cross country team (Plainedge HS, Class of '68) that usually finished twenty minutes after the rest of the team. We didn't go back out and run back with him, however, no one ever said one disparaging word to him or about him. Heck, he was running harder than any of us.

Jack's argument about supporting Trump is that the election should "not be a personality contest", admitting Trump had some flaws. But Jack completely missed the point that an election should be about "character", and that Trump's lack of character makes him unfit to be President. Yeah - Jack was a great golfer - maybe the greatest - but not a good judge of human beings, as his business dealings have shown. Arnold Palmer on the other hand used golf to find out whether a man had the character to be someone he wanted to do business with, and had much more success in his business dealings than Jack did. Arnold will always be the King.

I saw a brief clip of Trump on the golf course last weekend that was taken from a considerable distance with a zoom lens. He putted from a fairly long distance and came up at least 6 feet short, which was easy to tell when Trump walked up to the ball because the flagstick was still in the hole and a body length or more away from him. He walked up to the ball without taking a stance and swiped at it like it was a tap in. What's the point of even playing?

That’s all that Black Lives Matter is about, let’s be there for each other. Now, I don’t think it’s too much to ask, that people want to NOT have police con-tinuously killing our people. Still, imagine how👉🏾alien this concept is to: Donald Trump, who isn’t ever there for anyone but : Donald Trump.

When I played at golf, the "house rules" were you were allowed 1 mulligan per hole that could only be taken on the tee shot and only if the ball didn't go at least 5 yards in the air or ended up in the rough, the water or out of bounds. If a non putt didn't travel at least 3 feet you were usually allowed to hit it again without counting the prior stroke. "House rules" had to be agreed on prior to the game.

At 53:45, Reilly starts talking about 9/11, and the heroism of the 4 passengers who fought back against the hijackers. There's another 9/11 anecdote in "Commander In Cheat": Reilly was invited to Trump's penthouse in New York and given the tour, including a telescope that Trump boasted was solid gold. As Reilly looked through the telescope: Trump: "I watched the Twin Towers come down through that telescope." Reilly: "Oh, my God..." Trump: (proudly) "Yep, solid gold!"

47:04 It's just occurred to me...is it possible that Trump genuinely does not understand the rules of the game? Most of his "knowledge" outside of golf if often how he *_thinks_* something works, like "clean coal" being where "they take the coal and they clean it." It's clear that Trump's mental capacity is severely limited and he may not be capable of retaining nuanced information like golf rules. When Reilly talked about the missed putt, it sounds like Trump's knowledge of golf extends no further than, "We go out here and hit the ball." It's clear that he either has no regard for the rules, or he just simply does not KNOW them. I don't think he comprehends how unsportsmanlike he's being, and I think the concepts of honor, honesty, fairness, etc are totally foreign to him. He simply CANNOT comprehend those concepts -- no more than you or I can comprehend what a 6-dimensional object looks like.
