Sportsmobile Rig Walk Around
The Overland Bound convoy was joined by Overland Bound Members #1444 Joel and Renee in their new Sportsmobile on our route to the Overland Expo. Joel received the nick name "11k" after other Overland Bound members learned that he had 11,000 miles on the rig! While at Alabama Hills we had time to ask about the rig!
We hope you enjoy this rig walk around as we go through the rig, inside and out!

It looks like a fabulous vehicle. But I found this to be an extremely frustrating video. I wanted to see what it looks like. But all the camera work was so CLOSE, showing all the detail, that I never got an overall sense of what the thing WAS. There wasn't an overall exterior shot of the van until 11 minutes, and then it was only for a couple of seconds. In fact, I was about 5 minutes into the video before I even realized that it was a van and not a pickup with a slide in camper on the back. START the video with a wide shot walk around, THEN go into all the detail that you showed. THAT would be great.

I am a new subscriber. We will be retiring in just a couple of years, and we are planning to buy a camper van and spend at least 6 months on the road every year. But because of YOUR channel, I am now considering getting something 4x4 so that we can get up into the mountains and AWAY from those campgrounds and RV parks. Thanks for the inspiration!

Good video - but I am pretty sure they used a DSLR for their video work which accounts for the constant focus hunting. A good camcorder work so much better for these purposes and everything stays in focus. Using a 15-30mm zoom would keep the whole rig in the shot. Just my 2 cents but I did enjoy the video - at least the parts that were in focus.
A true dream rig!
I live in Fresno and my neighbors uncle is the owner of Sportsmobile Alan. He is a neat person, he gets many , many huge actors buying these and he wont let them cut in line for production their 18 months out for orders.. for everybody.

Alan is a gem! He has so much knowledge and passion. I just watched a video tour of Sportsmobile and he was impressive.
WOW WHAT A RIG, AND IS 4x4 AND A POP TOP, JUST AWSOME!!!
Great rig. Being adventurous and having fun is not limited to the frugal.
Very nice, this Sportsmobile sure is done right. Nice choices made by the owners Thanks for shooting this great walk around.
I really enjoy your videos! There are a lot of over landing videos on KZread and yours break the mold. I like how you talk to everyday people on the trail about their rigs. It's like getting 100s of years of experience at your fingertips. I am a new owner of an 2014 FJ Cruiser and have always wanted to overland. I have hundreds of mile off-road but not over landing and it's my next step. I research everything and watching your videos give me insight into real word needs over cool guy looks. This video, the Rubicon, and Defender vids are super informative if you listen. I also like your "how to" DIY install videos too. Thank you for making this channel and please keep 'em coming!!!

I want one! Wow, totally awesome, especially for photography lovers who are enthusiastic about remote places.
Amazing vehicles and scenery. Actually looks like a movie set!
awesome van,,,enjoyed how happy he is showing us around
Very cool rig. Taking it to a whole new level...
I Love your video walk arounds. This Sportsmobile was a subject!
great video - I really wish the background music was not so annoying...
my dream vehicle. love it. thanks for the video.
I gotta admit, overland vehicles are very cool. A family of four could probably live out of it for a while, 90% off the grid.
These rigs are easily worth their price tag, thanks for the tour. I'd rather have one of these than a house. Someday...
Wow!! Beautiful rig and location!
Sweet rig! One of these days ill have something like that.
great video - the guys were awesome to watch.
great video. Thanks for sharing!
You asked great questions concerning the solar panels and battery life.
Thank you for sharing.
my first car was a 1971 vw bus with the sportmobile conversion in Indiana. so sweet . now I have a 1968 vw bus westaflia. I really want a ford econoline sportmobile with the Quigley 4 wheel drive soooo sick.
What a cool rig!
what a good review. Good job.
Thx, Awesome Rig! 😇
I need this in my life!!!
Got the grateful red wine at 10:12 !!! Nice 💀⚡🌹
Love your Rig! You have it so Sweet!
That, KZread... Is what an excited, grown up child looks like on an adventure :P pressing all the buttons! Brilliant rig. I see Sportsmobile are making alot of different vans. Quality stuff.

Thank you.
So jealous. One of these will be mine some day.
I love how the interior layout was inspired from a Westfalia. Too bad we couldn't get a good view
Great video
Who makes the sway bar disconnect? I have been looking for that for my Ford.
Alabama Hills!
A lot of people seem to think the Econoline is dead, but Ford actually plans to continue offering the Econoline chassis in a cutaway version for at least another 7 years. Sportsmobile still buys them and adds their own fiberglass body, which looks pretty much exactly like the old Econoline, except it has about 4 more inches interior width. They call it the Sportsmobile "Classic". I definitely plan to purchase something like this when I retire in a few years, but I can't decide between the hardcore Ford or a high roof Sprinter 4x4 conversion. I definitely want 4WD, but I'm not sure I need the capability of the Ford. Plus the Sprinter diesel gets way better gas mileage can be configured with more features and storage, since it's a high roof. I think either one would be great to own.
Nice mountain bike!!
very cool van
uncledoug here I BUILT VANS FOR 20 YEARS IN MY OWN SHOP CALLED VANTASTIC CREATIONS IN ASHEVILLE N.C. AND THE FORD V10 SUCKS ON MILLAGE GREAT POWER HARD TO WORK ON TRY CHANGING THE PLUGS LOL TO BAD DODGE IS NOT STILL BUILDING FULL SIZE VAN FORDS SUCK . I hope you liked Sedona and Flagstaff. I grew up in the former, and live now in the latter. Nice rig
front center diff lock? is it the front or is it the center?
I. I love it
Should the toilet be stored next to the microwave and fridge!
The ultimate overlander rig. But the cost! Not possible for most people. My guess would be well north of 100K. And the gas mileage with all that weight (granite counter tops? lol) and the big engine must be just horrible!
Freaking cool man
Any A/C features when parked?
Cool.
Ahaha we use our micro wave to store a mr coffee and a toaster!
Ok Alabama Hills wheeling hmmm. We need to do a trip up to funnel lake. Ok you asked about the solar and yes I can run the fridge even in overcast for days on my smb. OB 5579 and willing to take a group up
very nice. I love the v10s too. next time google "69 vw bus" to get a proper reference image!
It's awesome I love it it's really cool looking nice rig but I'm sorry you bought it .....you would get way more love if you could say I BUILT IT !!!!
This is my dream😵
Rich guy don’t know to much about his van . It’s very nice .
How many miles per gallon and how many miles with a tank ?
Cool...
Whats the name of the song in the background between 15:06 and 16:00
Camera job is brutal...Great van
Great setup, what's the out the total price with all of the amenities in that rig

I have a really nice 1990 VW. Something a little bigger, more modern and a 4x4 are a great reason to want a SM. And here is a scary thought for you. A syncro VW 1990 will cost as much as a REALLY nice used SM.

JuneBugJoe I mean, I drive a jeep that was probably 3/4 of the price of one of these after all the money sunk into it. I built it as a camping rig, rooftop tent and all that. I'm now thinking of ditching the jeep for one of these. Would be great to have some place a little more chill to hang out at if its raining or cold on the mountain.

I live in a small town well not really a town just a stop sign so I get to see a lot of trucks go by and you can tell the city people when they go by there trucks are spotless. You can also tell the farm trucks mine included there always dirty with an old cross bed toolbox and a 150 gallon transfer fuel tank mine needs new tires after 60K miles this will be the 8th time I have put new tires on my 1978 Dodge Power Wagon.

The best rigs are the ones with all the custom add- ons that will actually get used. Cant stand when owners bulk up a vehicle just to get some attention.

I guess in so cal you leave the AR at home?
I really enjoy watching these videos. Curious if you run across family vehicles. Most seem to be for 2 people. This one would make sense for a larger family but wasn't used in that manner. Not criticizing anyone, just looking for ideas.

The V10 is actually a really good motor. it's mileage is decent, it's very easy to repair, very reliable and $5,000-$10,000 cheaper than a diesel.

Guillaume Laplanche ford stopped putting diesels in the van chassis circa 2010 however these vans used to share chassis with super duties if I'm not mistaken so a diesel might bolt right up
