I, generally, use a ratcheting, interchangeable regular-sized screwdriver for the initial loosening of screws. Here's a link to the brand I use:

Get some additional, varying sizes Flathead and Phillips bits while you're at it.
The adjustable wrenches I use (instead of hex nut wrenches) are Husky, but these (with the red insert) work very well... 6-inch will be used the most:

If you prefer to use hex nut wrenches, I'd recommend angled/offset ones, like these:

What a mess. Makes me wonder what the inside must look like. But you got it going again, nice work.

Thanks Steve! This was recordded a few months back, but I just got around to editing and posting it.... I don't recall how it looked inside, but something's telling me it wasn't that bad inside. Go figure if that's true.

For cleaning the crud and corruption out of the drag cavity, spray down with CLR (calcium, lime and rust) cleaner. Allow to sit 10-15 minutes and it will melt away a lot of the salt and aluminum oxide corrosion. Flush with clean water. I've gone to using CLR and a soft bristle brush on the exterior of any of the Penn International reels I've purchased that require a little tender loving care. The Scotch-Brite gray pads are # 7448 pads. If additional cleaning is required in the drag cavity, Dremel sells a small wire wheel that attaches like the rest of their accessories via the 1/8" collet.

Thanks for watching and your input, Gunga. I used to use the CRC Salt Away (similar to the effects of CLR), but found that the results were close to the same as just using the screwdriver and scrubbies. After all these years, I still don't have a Dremel.... think I need to get one, just to try it.... I know it's great for refurbing gears, and I'm sure it'll make quick work of the well. Stay tuned for the next video.

@@TSGReelService I'll give your cleaner a try to see if it works the same as CLR. I do use CLR on the coffee pot though. I wish I had taken pictures of a Penn 12T I recently purchased. It had sporadic corrosion spots, and the typical green chrome. CLR with the soft bristle brush removed the corrosion spots and all of the green. Once the nasty grease was removed, vinegar and water on the brass parts and cleaned up nice. Had one bearing that was rough, but for what I paid, well ahead of the game. I needed another rod and reel to leave in my truck for those days too nice to not fish. I refuse to leave tackle in the boat, as things have a tendency to sprout legs.

Lol.... they do have a habit of walking away. If it was that bad, I'm sure you got a good deal on it. I tend to stay away from the vinegar, but CLR does work for a lot of things.

I hope that screwdriver is an extra one to be used as chisel. If I may be permitted to make a suggestion. It would be a good idea to remove all of the trash from the work area, once cleaning is completed and start with a new clean surface to assemble the reel. Thus, eliminating the chance of re-contamination. Otherwise, an informative video.

Thanks for watching, Hashem! Suggestions/comments/feedback/praises are welcome. I had enough clean area to not worry too much about contamination, but it's a good point you bring up (see my other videos). In regard to the screwdriver, heck no.... it's my do-all. With the abuse I put it through, I'm surprised it's still functional (you should see how I use it for frozen Spinfisher bearings). Spread the word about the channel.
