I agree with this. I have stage 4b peritoneal carcinomatosis and with this type of cancer you get really sick. I have malignant ascites now and the pain was bad I could barely drink and could not eat for 4 days. When I went to my Dr on the 5th day the ascites had dried up some and a lot of the pain was gone. Ascites does not go away. It just builds up and finally kills you. Mine reversed some by not eating and drinking very little in a 4 day span. I was so dehydrated yet I was feeling so much relief. There is definitely something to fasting that works.

Although profits likely have a role, there are some pretty serious challenges in studying water fasting as a cancer treatment. For one, such a study cannot be double-blinded. Also, because untreated cancer is fatal, it would be unethical to fail to treat patients in early stages for the better part of a month. That means clinical trials are usually full of stage IV patients for whom conventional treatment failed. But there comes a time when fasting--which might have been very effective at stage II, or even III--is no longer a useful intervention on its own. Because of these limitations, any data on the effectiveness of fasting as a cancer treatment is likely to be anecdotal, survey, or animal model studies for a good long time.

I fasted for 13 days - no food, only bottled water (tap water tasted awful). Unnfortunately it made no difference to my PSA level (for prostate cancer). On the other hand, 6 weeks of mostly veg stir fries brought my PSA down from 10.5 to 7. This proved to me that a whole food plant based diet is the best diet to reduce risk of prostate cancer.

I have a b-cell NHL lymphoma, called HCL, BRAF V600e positive (those are said to feed on the ketone body acetoacetate, as well as glucose and glutamine - which seems to imply they cannot be starved), I did 110 days of waterfasting in 4 episodes, 40, 20, 20, 30 days, between 2016 and early 2018, i cannot tell if my condition was better or worse right before or after the fasting episodes (no blood tests, i was not aware of my disease), but i did crash with late stage (thrombocytopenic bleeding and neutropenic fever) in late 2018 so it clearly did not heal me for good. My diet was plant based but not always rich in vegetables, i had many days of neglecting my broccoli and eating mainly white bread and dates or just buckwheat and peas, other times it was lentils, rice, broccoli, beets, etc, never a huge diversity of foods. Today i am in remission after a pharma treatment (lost some brain power!) and i intuitively trust in a diet with great plant and herb diversity, at least 60 plants per week, i trust in some particular herbs, i TRY to avoid weight gain (palm oil cookies, etc) and keep caloric deficits moderate (to loose winter gains). I also believe in running.

Fasting deprives the cancer of glucose. Seyfried couples fasting, or ketogenic diet, with a glutamine antagonist so that he can starve the cancer of his other source of energy, glutamine. He is working on the timing and dosing, in order to be able to set up a clinical study. He claims very good results (people alive after many years they had been given a few months of life expectation by traditional medicine) and I certainly don't doubt him, for those cancers that actually show damaged mitochondria, i.e. those cancers which can only feed on sugar through "fermentation". Those cancers, due to the damaged mitochondria, cannot feed on ketonic bodies.

Sixty day fasting is nuts. Does the study say how long he actually fasted before ending up in the hospital? My opinion, based on my own experience with fasting. is that up to 2 weeks of water fasting is safe and beneficial for most people. You should do your own research first, especially if you have serious acute afflictions. A 2 week fast will also help reset your taste buds and appetite so as to aid in maintaining a healthy diet. You can also do a mono-diet like eating just plain baked/boiled potatoes for 2 weeks to rest your taste buds.

Hi, crb2061! I agree that fasting for 60 days is ill-advised. Dr. Greger does not suggest fasting for more than 24 hours without medical supervision. The person in the paper cited in the video arrived in the hospital in a comatose state, and in respiratory failure at day 53 of the fast, as you can read here: pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/26104844/. You can find everything on our site related to fasting here: nutritionfacts.org/topics/fasting/ I hope that helps! -Christine Kestner, MS, CNS, LDN, MPH, NutritionFacts.org Health Support Volunteer

An Italian Doctor, Salvatore Simeone, reported, in a book, a case of a person who healed her leg which was in septicemia with 60, or 90 I don't remember, days of water fasting. The hospital proposed the amputation of the leg, and in fact told her that she was going to die without surgery. She decided to fast instead, and saved her leg. Long fasts can be absolutely powerful. She did this long fast while being assisted by said Doctor. Jason Fung reports a fasting, in his clinic, which lasted 385 days, no calories, only a broth and vitamin and salts supplements. Again, such long fasts should be undertaken under medical supervision (that can be made by phone as well).

I feel like if you're going to wade into these waters you need to give some direct guidance to people currently dealing with cancer to be 100% clear about what what they should do with this advice. I could totally imagine people I know hearing this, quitting their current treatment plan, and water fasting with no oversight from a doctor.

What more can he do than present the findings, as well as presenting a warning that fasting carries risk (he talked about a case of a guy ending up in hospital doing a water fast) and then advising healthy plant-based eating? People need to use common sense (and ears) sometimes. Better he give info than guidance. He's not their doctor.

I agree. Doctor Greger specializes in reporting research results. Healthy people can take up his advice anytime but sick ones need guidance from a physician. I remember some do, and even have centers in the USA. I'd look up Dr. John McDougall and Dr. Neil Barnard.

What if fasting works, lets say even only slightly better than chemotherapies ? Why are no studies engaged on humans on a large scale ? Dr. Longo proved fasting killed /drastically reduced cancer in mice more than a decade ago. Why still no studies after this ?!

He never told anyone to quit their treatments. If someone did that, well... too bad? Don't do bad thing, do good thing. There's no point in this video in which it is implied to do something stupid.

I had NHL in 2001. I did chemo two times. I was supposed to do 6. The two chemos got rid of the disease. Now I have stage 4 b peritoneal carcinomatosis and have done 6 different chemos, and vegan diet. Nothing has touched this. My cancer is still very healthy.

Update. I got very sick and was in so much pain I could not eat for 4 days and had barely anything to drink for those 4 days. I was forced into almost a complete dry fast. I was surprised it reversed my malignant ascites which is unheard of.

we need more studies on dry fasting, i do not like water fasting nor do i think its the best way to fast. 3 days dry fast does wonders, more people should do that.
