I haven't been catching up with Spongebob for the last few years, but I did watch the Birthday Blowout. It's the best special Spongebob had in a while. Loved the scenes in the human version of the Krusty Krab. Stephen Hillenburg would be very proud of this.

I’m eighteen. I’m legally an adult. But seeing Patchy The Pirate made me squeak and cry with nostalgia.

I think the easiest answer is that one is a king the other is an actual god. The god gave the king powers to rule over bikini bottom since he’s got to watch over the entire ocean not just bikini bottom. It also explains the guy from sponge on the run

I understand why Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy were missing from this episode, but I’m not sure why The Flying Dutchman didn’t make a cameo.

100% agree. Big Birthday Blowout manages to actually have heartwarming moments, takes all the effort it can to celebrate the show, and is a good love letter to the creator and the fans. Truth or Square on the other hand was mostly a compilation of pointless scenes from episodes that never happened and was a filler episode

Lets be honest,this episode was one big apology letter for Truth or Square.I'm sure the crew knew they would get a lot of backlash if history repeated itself,or if this episode was even WORSE,so they made sure to put as much effort into it as possible

@HorrorFan 1988 there will be a Season 12 episode, probably airing near Valentine's Day, called "Pat Hearts Squid" (confirmed by Vincent Waller that it won't be an LGBT episode), so the third one may not happen. P.S. I'm saying this because Season 12: A)Gave Plankton and Karen a baby. And B)I think that at the end of "My Two Krabses"(episode 259a) Mr. Krabs will probably marry Mrs. Puff. So I hope that at the end of "Pat Hearts Squid", with Patrick's help, Squidward actually gets a permanent girlfriend.

@HorrorFan 1988 I know. Even the third movie will put a special focus on the three main relationships, plus SpongeBob rescuing Gary (originally from alien cats, in the final version from Poseidon). Heck, I'm sure Plankton will play a major role in it too since he's very popular.

Sandy's behavior in this episode almost reminds me of PreHibernation Week, but I'm not sure which episode utilized her the best

I like it. I like how the background characters having a larger role works since they actually had some semblance of a character other than memes (*cough Slice of Life).I like how they don’t overdo many obnoxious traits of the characters. I like how this special feels like a true celebration of Spongebob rather than a “look at this extended regular episode”.

Patchy finally met Spongebob. For me, that's instantly a win.

For SpongeBob's 20th anniversary: He got introduced to his IRL counterparts, he met Prestonplayz at the bean show, David came back after Neptune burned him, and he got to do his intro twice.

i have watched 90% spongebob episodes ever made and this is my my favorite,but the stop-motion new year/christmas special is my second favorite.

PATCHY THE PIRATE IS STILL IN THE SHOW? Now I wish he fought Burger Beard in Sponge Out of Water.

Aparently, since "Plankton Paranoia" he has been given that name (acorrding to that episode's the credits). With "SpongeBob's Big Birthday Blowout" being the first time he's ever called like that.

I know it will never happen, but I'd love to see a spin off of the rusty slab and stuff. Tom Kenny AS spongebob was pure perfection to me. I say "it'll never happen" mainly because for it to be not "nickified" it would have to be given to another network, and nick isn't going to give up their cash cow. It's nice to think about though. JimBob Humanpants would be an amazing series.

I actually never realized the guy in the blue shirt with the dog was Thomas Wilson, the guy who played Biff Tannen in Back to the future. He also played Flats, The Strangler, and Reg in the show.

Tbh i miss watching live tv cause this would look like something to definitely watch but idc for spoiling myself. Cant believe its 20 years old...

I’ve only seen the episode once, so I don’t really have a solid opinion on the special at the moment, but if there’s one thing about the Special I liked, it was all the rare cameos. And while I expected there to be an In Memory portion at the end for Steven, I’m Glad they did it. I couldn’t think of this special ending any other way.

Omg, Patchy is back! Like if you remember that 3DS game where patchy was the main guy.

"Mister Krabs comes out to assist the scene, his gut is *legendary*" Fuckin amen, Clancy brown looking fine even while using his silly cartoon crab voice. Love the guy

A few things: 1. How could you not mention Tom Wilson in the live-action segments? He's only worked on the show since season 2. 2. Don't gloss over the fact they got closing cast for the Spongebob Musical for the credits. They were my favorite cameo. 3. I really like that they finally let Patchy meet SpongeBob. I think that was a really cool touch for longtime fans. Other than that, it was a nice analysis for a more worthy anniversary special.

Also, it’s a tiny bit strange the strangler went to his party even though he didn’t like it last time, but it was still a really nice cameo

While truth or square makes it unclear whether spongebob is "real" or not, other episodes featuring patchy show him sending letters to spongebob such as the episode where spongebob throws a house party. I remembered that they made a joke that patchy didn't think about the effect water would have on letters written in ink.

I was 25 years old when I learned Tom Kenny was also Patchy The Pirate... Just now...

It was a great celebration of the show and an even bigger tribute to Hillenburg. Great special.

Seeing Patchy's body at the end was super creepy. Like, they could've just shown Potty dancing, not Patchy's body seizing on a 3D rendered beach in uncanny valley. That scene shook me down to the bone.

Wow this episode is packed with cameos. In fact. I just noticed the picture of "The Commissioner" on the Mermaid Man & Barnacle Boy table!

Am i the only one who drew many lines from this special, to sponge out of water? I still love the special tho.
