    I prefer Chefbob. Because it managed to be funny whithout the expence of someone else suffering...well...not to the same levels of squirrel joke... Also...that ending it's hilarious....thoo....it raises many questions....is chefbob a demoniac parasite that takes control of the hand of those who unleash his power? This episode goes weirdly meta with his concept... It reminds me of that time in wich Bob created a badly drawn version of himself that tried to kill him....

    The thing about squirrel jokes is it makes you uncomfortable for a reason. Because the ultimate goal is to deliver the moral that making fun of your friends even if it gets a laugh is wrong. The episode ends with spongebob learning something. In chef Bob nothing is learned at all. Theres no moral

  • @cullenlatham2366

    @cullenlatham2366

    there actually is a similar moral in chef bob: dont let your entertainment personality ignore your beliefs. everyone puts on a show of some kind at least once in their life, but if you do something out of your own character, you can loose yourself.

  • @nightdrivenen7909

    @@cullenlatham2366 But then what about the ending? You don't see a different variation of a name or even a different variation of the character, you see Chief Bob on TV with his own program where he is probably going to make TONS of money because he was and probably still IS popular. It would be different if you saw "Chief Patrick, Chief Frank, or Chief Stew" (Just to use other names) but you see Chief Bob because that is the relatable character of the episode doing the same routine; but that isn't what happens here. So what does that do with the Morale you think you are announcing? Don't let the act you are going to perform take over your life unless it proves to be completely successful and if you abandon it; you won't be successful? Because Spongebob is still there; so no one really cares about how he feels if that same mentality just gets put up anyway. Doesn't that just ascue the supposed moral? You will be successful, you will be popular, you will make a lot of money; and no one is going to hate you for it because we see how the rest of the town acts towards Chief Bob; they love him. So why would you turn that away? It's not like anyone else was getting hurt, sure he intimidated two characters but that was about it and they were trying to remove his career and spotlight. He kind of had a right to shut them down. So if all of the positive traits are presented with the horrible side and Spongebob is this positive morality yet he is in a dead end job (Though he loves it to which good on him; but kids are not taught to do what they love nowadays) and his alternate persona is now a famous public celebrity...Who are kids going to look up too more? Chief Bob got the better deal out of this in everyway by NOT being tied to his moral side. There is no lesson learned because the moral lesson for children is absolutely removed by the end scene with everyone shocked that Chief Bob is not only still around but running his own TV program...All symbolism you wanted to say there is GONE with that scene existing. Chief Bob SKYROCKETED to newer hights abandoning his morality.

    NIghtDriven En7 I will admit i havent seen spongebob in a good while, but even the end gag of chef bob being successful can be traced back. Spongebob lost control of chefbob, and in the age of the internet, it isnt easy to escape a successful creation. if you end something you created that was successful because it wasnt "you", fans can easily continue it. that was chefbob's first episode. the first episode in a fan creation rarely spirals out of control. You could also compare it to channels like Fred and Annoying orange, both of which got their own tv shows, but never really had the same feel. If the fans or company that took chefbob refuse to separate themselves from spongebob, spongebob is always going to be haunted by his own creation. A piece of media can have a moral that is lost within the episode's antics. all i was saying is that a moral does exist, not that it was properly executed. Keep in mind the show is still working towards getting back to what many consider the golden age of spongebob. It isnt perfect.

  • @nightdrivenen7909

    @nightdrivenen7909

    @@cullenlatham2366 Fair points, but the whole purpose of a moral is that it needs to be executed properly or it becomes lost and misinterpreted. Children won't see that and most won't ask about it; they will just observe and configure their own idea based off of it. Since no one really learns a lesson and only Spongebob is the one who freaks out - its hard for children to understand the ideas being shown as we progress forward. Ultimately I guess it does fall under the parents ability to review what the kids are watching but with so many "Safe" TV shows out there for kids, parents are becoming more and more lazy...but that is a digression for a whole other conversation. Sorry about that.

    I liked squirrel jokes more, because we saw some progression in it. They did not create a new character whose sole purpose is to be antagonized for this episode and then tossed away. His handpuppet did not learn or change, nor did it really suffer/loose that much (as we can see in the last scene) because of the way it acted. In Squirrel jokes Spongebob was a character that we all know, and we sympathise with - which makes us understand his motives and act - which makes this situation more relatable. There are people that aren't careful and do this (talking bad in a joking manner about them) to a friend they have without noticing that it is something bad or that they are hurting them. Also the "audience" would be most probably a friend group (at first - and then maybe get out of hand). So this episode (can) make(s) people more aware if they are in such an "abusive realationship" with a friend. Also Spongebob pays the price. He also learned from this and changed in a realistic way. While he still makes fun of others, he at least is now more careful when doing so. (Sorry if the grammer, etc. is a bit off - it's half past midnight and I had a rough day)

    It's also a moral about cringe comedy in that if you are going to make fun of something, you absolutely need to be open to making fun of as much as you can, within reason, for the interest of fairness. Think about it. Spongebob, instead of straight up stopping the squirrel jokes, just adds other animals into the mix. Then that way, it makes the squirrel jokes arguably less hurtful because everyone else in the room is fair game for being made fun of. It's actually an important lesson to learn if you plan on being a comedian who makes those kinds of jokes.

    The animation during the fight scene between Chef Bob and Spongebob is so well animated. Seasons 10 and 11 have some of the best animation I've seen in a cartoon in awhile. It's so expressive and cartoony and it really brings more personality to the characters. It reminds me a lot of the 40's Looney Tunes shorts with how they pushed the character's expression and movement. I also really love the emphasis on visual gags and a lot of them can be very creative or just get a laugh out of me from the expression of a character alone. As someone who wants to be a cartoonist the current seasons has really been inspiring to me and have crafted some of my favroite episodes of the series.

    I find it when you target one kind of person it’s wrong but when you’re able to make jokes about yourself and others it’s different. Like sometimes, as he was saying we have one friend in a group we always rag on, but if you all rag on each other it’s less targeted and you all have fun with it. People have made jokes targeting certain people, and if they kept doing it it could become uncomfortable, but if they spread it around and make jokes about all sorts of people and stereotypes then you’re not singling out one single person. I don’t know, I think it’s not super easy to explain but we all know it when we see it, you feel me?

    I think maybe a case could be made for why Spongebob cares about the audience being insulted in Chefbob vs Squirrel jokes is that in the latter he was intentionally making them while in Chefbob he comments that he doesn't know why chefbob said them. Its him doing it for comedy vs an separate personality doing it. Its like yoy can roast your friends and be okay with it, but if some random person says the same thing its an insult.

    squirrel jokes is more about taking a joke too far, and chef bob's is more abut the struggle between yourself and your performing alias. sandy's plot in squirrel joke works because it is spongebob. they know each other well, and early spongebob was very patient. doing one massive thing wrong wasnt enough for him to snap, youd have to take him for granted over an extended period of time to really make him snap when it came to his friends, like in squidward's get a job episode. early spongebob had a harder time seeing where the line of "too far" was. the episode is more emphasizing the character flaw and trying to get past it. newer spongebob has a personality of "cant do anything wrong", so he'd have a harder time making the joke in the first place, and the only times we ever see him as "evil" there is a second personality to blame; a separate entity. chef bob is just the most recent example, but it happened before, as well with his one episode abrasive side character. they are distinctly different characters occupying one body, so even with spongebob becoming rude, us as the audience never blames spongebob himself.

    Alpha Jay more like Alpha here's my opinion on Squirrel Jokes: I felt it was more of a moral-ey episode. At the end, Spongebob learns not to concentrate on one individual for his comedy routine, thus not making anyone a target of bullying. It also shows how comedians must be responsible, as people can be quick to take their words at face value, not just believing their exaggerated jokes, but acting on them as well. Even as a kid, I never felt that the bullying towards Sandy was **supposed** to be funny. And while it does have this kinda "preachy" side to it, it still has plenty of classic Spongebob hilarity, most of which was absent from this video, I assume to avoid using too much copyrighted content because the focus was why the episode *wasn't* as good. edit: removed reference to a part I thought was in this episode but was actually from Culture Shock

    Don't forget that, on a certain level, Sandy can be seen as the "other" (race, gender, orientation, etc.), and the fish can laugh at Sandy because she's not like them. It's not just the roasting of an individual, but also the stereotyping of a type of people different from the joke's audience.

    I'm fine with the moral being taught, that you shouldn't focus all of your insult-based jokes on one person; but I strongly dislike the episode, due to the way it was conveyed. There's a bunch of early episodes with morals in them, but they were taught much better IMO. The first episode that comes to mind is the one about spongebob ripping his pants as a joke (I assume it's just called' ripped pants') that told a moral about repetitious jokes, and where to draw the line on humor. I think I would have liked squirrel jokes a lot better if Spongebob either saw the effects his jokes were having on Sandy's interaction with the townsfolk, or realized he was pushing Sandy away from being his friend; and made the conscious decision to stop making the jokes, and set things right. The intentional torture of the main character to make him learn his lesson never sat well with me, even as a kid. I've always been strongly against corporal punishment for children, and that's likely where most of my problems stem from. You should be able to explain morals through story and natural consequences; instead of conscious physical trauma.

    “Squirrel Jokes” is high art. I mean when I was a kid it did make me uncomfortable in a way too, but that was the point. What was just a joke to Spingebob wasn’t to Sandy and even the people he was telling the joke to. At the end he finally puts everyone on a pedestal to be insulted and shows we’re all able to be insulted. He then abandons the insult humor in general because it’s not him. It works really well in my opinion.

    I guess I can see why people don't enjoy squirrel jokes, but I enjoy the squirrel jokes and the kind of realistic perspective of the episode. Besides in the end sandy gives spongebob his comeuppance and spongebob learns his lesson and tells new jokes. I can also see why Patrick might be bothersome to people in the episode because he doesn't have spongebob's back when he's supposed to be spongebob's best friend, but it's obvious that Patrick wasn't a focus point in the episode. Then again it can be debatable if that's unacceptable or not.

    I personally like Squirrel Jokes more. All though I don't think it's perfect, I've always gotten a vibe of a message telling people to be careful with their jokes because it can be a little damaging. Again, it could have been executed better but I don't really see that in Chef Bob - which just feels like a story of something happening and then concluding from what I see.

    I actually saw Chefbob for the first time yesterday, so I have actual thoughts about it. First thing, my favorite one of the two episodes is Chefbob, I’ve never liked Squirrel Jokes. Just rubbed me the wrong way. But I’m not super big on Chefbob either, solely because of the ending bit. The episode it reminded me of most was the one where Patrick went all karate chop crazy. I’ve never been big on “puppet/things attached to a person have their own will” concepts because in giving a hand, or puppet, or whatever, autonomy, takes autonomy away from the character because they’ve lost control of a body part. That’s why I don’t like Chefbob’s ending, if they hadn’t revealed that Chefbob was alive, I could believe Spongebob’s overactive imagination got the better of him and he really believed the puppet was autonomous. If the puppet wasn’t alive, it makes the scene with Squidward, and the scene where Spongebob get roasted by the puppet, much more interesting to watch for me. A little thing, I can’t help but notice that you brought up other episodes when talking about Squirrel Jokes. Spongebob doesn’t really have much in the way of continuity, and bringing other episodes in while comparing the quality of two episodes, even it helps justify your reasons for not liking an episode, makes the comparison a little muddy. Nevermind that I’m not sure why you’d choose to do a verses where you so clearly refer one over the other. I still enjoy the video, but still. One last thing, I frequently find the animation on Mr. Krabs in particular very distracting in the newest season. They need to slow their roll on the animation on his jawline, because christ is it hard to look at sometimes.

    So, I feel like the two episodes were not trying to accomplish the same thing at all. When I first saw you were going to talk about squirrel jokes, I was kind of excited to hear someone finally do an analysis of this episode, but you missed a big portion of what the episode was trying to discuss: racial humor. We see in the episode the harm of racial jokes and how they can perpetuate stereotypes, to a point where Sandy has to show Spongebob what his jokes have done to create an image for her and her species. It only gets resolved when we see Spongebob do what a lot of comedians who do racial humor do and make fun of his own kind, as well as others to prevent one group being singled out. I thought the episode was great commentary on this, and was something I only came to appreciate when I was older.

    You're forgetting the whole point about squirrel jokes, it was an episode showing not to bully people just because they're different than you, or in the Spongebob case since she is not a sea creature. I think the first few seasons were to teach life lessons. Sandy was the main Target to pick on of course they're going to pick on her because she is not a sea creature I do agree with you, she does not deserve to be picked on like that in the end it was a great episode.

    Disagree. The secret box “taught” us that it’s ok to deliberately hide secrets from your bestie because it’s tied to him. “MM&BB 4” dictates that it’s okay to snitch on others just because even though at the same time, being a hypocrite is ok. In short, Squid wanted to snitch on SB because of the belt, even though squid hates MM&BB for no reason. “Life of crime” teaches you that it’s ok to accuse someone over petty shit, etc. nah, the first 3 seasons weren’t teaching us something. Not 100% of the time.

    I prefer Chef Bob because of the fact they use the concept of roasting crank it up to the next level. Squirrel Jokes was more of a “Hey, don’t make fun of your friend or else it will backfire.” thing, while ChefBob was more of a “ Some people like getting roasted, but that doesn’t mean you HAVE to do it if you don’t want to.” Also gotta love that out of place ending with the fact that he’s still alive and got successful by roasting people. I hope they make a sequel episode with this guy...but not in the Doodle Dimension or Bubble Buddy Returns way.

    I always saw squirrel jokes to be a good allegory for racist/sexist/offensive humor. The message more being "Offensive humor shouldn't just go away, just don't make one group the target of it, cause it can have negative consequences for said group". Especially since Sandy wasn't made fun of because of who she was as a person, but because of her different "race".

    Dude I love the episode "Squirrel Jokes". It was one of those episode that had a message to them that cartoons nowadays either lack or stir away from. Sponge Bob's squirrel jokes were clearly an allegory for jokes that stereotype people. As someone who also grew up watching shows on Comedy Central (Chapelle Show and South Park) at the same time this episode was in circulation, I could make the connection instantly. Being made to feel uncomfortable kinda was the point. It's how you generate empathy for Sandy's dilemma. That proves the episode _works._ Sandy "becomes" the stereotype to teach Spongebob a lesson. He _physically_ feels the pain of how _emotionally_ hurtful his jokes were to Sandy. Spongebob learns that lesson and does better by diversifying his jokes. He starts off with a little self deprecating humor to get people to laugh at him first, he joins in and laughs at himself then gets them to laugh at themselves as well as each other. It seems like a lot of people that dislike this episode have (possibly intentionally) also missed the message too. Therefore not giving this episode a fair or critical look into as it deserves like the other episodes.

  • @N12015

    @N12015

    Yeah. Not because the show is normally a comedy means that ALL the episodes will be just funny ones. Squirrel jokes is ABOUT THE COMEDY itself and how to do it properly. Plain jokes(the former ones) can be boring, while stereotyping only one kind of group(the middle ones) could be offensive with good reason. The key in the comedy is diversity in your tellings (like the latter ones), neither the censorship or the insult with no reasons, while also mantaining all the time the surprise factor. Sadly, nowadays is absurdly easy to offend someone, and because of that the comedy is slowly dying, bot in cartoons and even more in real life.

    What you seem to miss about Squirrel Jokes is what Spongebob is really doing at the end of the episode. By making fun of everyone, he is contextualizing his jokes AS jokes. Nobody is going to make fun of Sandy because they can now see the humor in themselves. It would've been a major cop out if they completely rejected humor that makes fun of others, like what seems to happen in Chef Bob. It would've been so easy and cliche for Spongebob to give a Full House styled speech at the end about never making fun of others ever, but it took the adult path of nuance and showed that it wasn't the jokes themselves that were harmful, but society acting on those jokes as reality. The moral lesson Spongebob learned was to be more responsible with his humor, and the moral Bikini Bottom as a whole learned is that jokes are really just jokes and not a basis to discriminate others on. Spongebob's moral lesson as a comedian leads to Bikini Bottom learning a moral lesson as the audience. Chef Bob has an admittedly more interesting premise with the actor vs the persona, but the message at the end seems jumbled and confused. I think Chef Bob had more potential, but Squirrel Jokes played their concept in a smarter and more cohesive way.

    ChefBob seems a little too mean spirited. I like Squirrel Jokes better because at least Sandy realizes the funny side of the jokes. Squidward doesn't get anything out of it because he doesn't get a chance to explore the other side, if you know what I mean. At least at the end of Squirrel Jokes Spongebob was making fun of everyone and the audience understood why. For this one, it isn't for me unfortunately. But I can see that Season 11 is a massive improvement. I don't think it's as amazing as other people say, but it's great nontheless.
