Squidward is actually good playing the clarinet, but when he feels insecure he can't do it well (to confirm that, when SpongeBob or someone else cheers him, he plays well) not only has musical talent,he also is an artist in all kinds of art (making sculptures, watercolor or acrylic paintings, abstract style,etc) and maybe the thing of Squilliam being bad at it can be true and he is jelous of Squidward's talent,making him feeling bad in all ways possible to feel better.

I always thought Squilliam was in love or liked Squidward or something because of the way he was always trying to rile him up and get his attention. He’s literally the personification of ‘pull their hair if you like them’ (despite how controversial that saying is. Though maybe Squilliam was raised like that and with that saying, since we don’t really get anything from his childhood, or at least I don’t remember)

Fun Fact: My biology teacher made us take a test on the “Band Geeks” episode. He just played the episode for us and would pause it when a character was on screen that he wanted us to classify. It was a lot of fun and an easy A.

2 years and this is still one of the most believable theories I've ever seen.

Every time I rewatch this, I always forget how beautifully the build-up was laid out. I always choke, either on air or my drink (currently tea), from the "big reveal." AND I'VE WATCHED THIS VIDEO EIGHTEEN TIMES.

Sure the lady fish might already be fancy but that theirr every day dress. Squiliam didn't even bother changing them one bit. If he really wanted them to look fancy why not give her a fancy hat or at least give her a small sort of cheap jewelery like a nice pin to just stand out a bit. He could pay the fish with the jewelery he bought for her. I think it's acceptable because I don't think they mentioned his love life.

I saw another theory that Squidward isn't even bad at the clarinet. In the first episodes, he played well. At some point, Spongebob borrows it without asking and uses it to clean a toilet or something else destructive. Every Episode after that, Squidward plays badly. Conclusion: his clarinet is broken

This is an incredible theory that I’d totally buy into, but I have a nitpick over the ending. Whenever Squidward romantically fantasizes about a relationship, it’s always himself with a female (e.g: him dancing with a lady on a magazine, his dream of marrying a Krabby Patty and having a kid, etc.). So, while it isn’t impossible for Squidward to be in a gay relationship, I have another theory to pose: Squidward and Squilliam were in love and feuding over the same girl in high school. A classic rivalry as old as time, Squidward won the affection of a girl whom Squilliam wanted as well and would go to the nail to humiliate Squidward for it. Perhaps this hypothetical lady knew Squidward was more talented than he seemed and knew Squilliam was a fraud hiding behind his money. Now to explain the robe: in Squilliam’s attempts to win the girl over, he gifted a robe to her. However, she continued to adore Squidward more and ended up leaving it with him, further infuriating Squilliam.

The lengths that Squilliam goes to to humiliate Squidward makes more sense this way. If Squilliam has everything and still wants to make Squidward feel less than, I think it's because Squidward took a girl from him in band class. If they had dated themselves, it wouldn't be the same ire. It has to be something that Squilliam was NOT in control over even with his power (looks?) and influence.

Considering his name is “Fancyson” what if it’s less about him giving up his dreams to be rich but it’s possible he’s inherited his fortunes. What if he picked on Squidward because even though he puts on an air of superiority he finds something about Squidward interesting enough to badger and harass him, going at great lengths to waste his inherited fortune. Maybe Squilliam is some passionless person, always having been given anything he ever wanted his entire life, yet he has no talents of his own. Squidward, who isn’t rich but has a home by just having his single fast food job. He isn’t the greatest at the clarinet but he never gives up. Fancyson can’t tread him down no matter how he tries by flexing the only thing that makes him stand out, his inherited money. Squidward WORKED for what he has and though it may not be a mass fortune, he still managed what Squilliam may not be able to. He feels like a failure living a lie and continues to keep up this one sided rivalry with Squidward.

I always thought the reason why Squidward hated Squilliam and why Squilliam always acted entitled towards Squidward was because some really bad happened between the two, but never thought it was because they used to date but broke up. The theory makes sense. This means there was a time when Squidward and Squilliam used to be more than just friends, but something clearly happened between them. Hol up, what if the reason why Squidward is a cashier is because Squilliam took everything from him when they broke up? I mean, high school related relationships rarely end up well for one reason or another. This might also prove a valuable lesson for the people of today's wokojda society, homosexuals are literally JUST people too... they can be just as bad or good as anyone else, they can be just as miserable or entitled and couples of them can be just as manipulative as any other couple. Said ward IS a good artist, the whole point of his character is that his hubris and pride gets in the way. Because when he doesn’t care about his art, he does extremely well. Honestly, even when he does care he has great mastery over many many mediums, but he only ever makes art of Himself. Which isn’t even a bad thing. The old Masters did self portraits all the time because it was cheap and you didn’t have to pay a model.

I'm pretty sure the "Squidward Torture" episodes were an inside joke geared towards the original character artist who came up with the look for the show, Michael Todd White. Todd White being the lead character artist/background designer from 1999 to 2000, abandoning the show in favor of seeking a career in painting. (Worth mentioning that Todd White plays Clarinet on top of being a painter. He also knows Martial Arts, I know Squidward doesn't do Karate. But maybe the idea for SpongeBob's Karate came from Todd White). So whenever they make fun of or abuse Squidward, they're likely taking shots at Todd White for leaving the SpongeBob gravy Train early.
