Yeah it just digs in and and digs in, and because it's so stringy it just doesn't split. I have elm all over my property and also maple, and I split all the maple, then the next day it was elm time. It took a single hour of trying to split elm and in comparison I got maybe 5% elm split compared to maple in that time frame. What turned into a single day for maple would have taken me weeks and half killed myself in the process. Nasty stuff. Although I will say this, elm is AMAZING firewood. It really is. It burns great and lasts long.

Some elm I can split, most is not worth the hassle to me.

Yeah it just seems like such a waste of time. You get done with 1 log 4 ways and then you've used a ton of energy, full swings with an 8 lb maul.​@@philipwilliamshomeinspecti4665

Yeah elm is nasty stuff. Can take up to 20 minutes for me to split through one of them damn things.
