SPLIT PEA SOUP | the classic recipe you know and love!

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

This split pea soup is what comfort food is all about! Made with a ham bone and meaty chunks of ham, it's hearty, flavorful, and super easy to make at home!
Split pea soup is a must-make recipe after you've cooked a ham for Easter, Thanksgiving, or Christmas. Green split peas are simmered with veggies and a meaty ham bone until they're softened, for a perfectly chunky, veggie-heavy soup with deep pork flavoring. This has always been one of my mom's favorite soups, and honestly, who can resist it? I guarantee you'll definitely be going back for seconds!

I don't eat pork anymore. It took me a long time to figure out a good substitute for ham... Smoked turkey wings... Actually any smoked turkey, but I save the wing tips and scraps for soup... any recipe that calls for ham bone or smoked ham hocks, I now use smoked turkey. 💖🌞🌵😷

Yes indeed, I remember the Original Pea Soup Anderson's in Buellton, Ca. on the way to Solvang, Ca. EVERYTHING on the menu came with a bottomless bowl of pea soup, for making HUNDREDS of Gallons of pea soup every day, that soup was truly remarkable. As a teenager I had a Club Sandwich and 3 or 4 bowls, on my Honeymoon I had the same thing with only 2 bowls and on the various Anniversaries I still ate 2 bowls. 😋

Andersen split pea soups! Headquartered in Buelton, CA.... and my dad would always say the same thing as your mom. He also (having "come over" from Sweden) called the soup Thursday soup, He told me that as the week went on, proteins were harder to purchase until payday, so soups like split pea started appearing by Thursday;-) Haven't thought about it in years. Thanks for taking me down memory lane. And I'm headed to the kitchen to make a batch!

I made this last night and it tasted really good. I've learned to improvise when cooking, so with the ham I bought a quarter boneless ham at the store and used that. It came out really well but I'll need to adjust the liquid and the heat next time as it came out very watery and didn't reduce near the end.

I grew up in Southern California and my family went on several vacations up the coast. The town of Buellton, CA along Hwy 101 is where the Pea Soup Anderson's restaurant was located. Last time I was there was over 20 years ago but I hadn't heard they were out of business. You used to be able to buy their canned Andersons Pea Soup in supermarkets but I don't think you can anymore.

Looks delicious! There's still a Pea Soup Andersen's in business in Santa Nella! Such a cool place to visit and eat delicious and classic pea soup, and their danishes are great too! They also have a gift shop ☺️

I use an immersion blender and blend at least half the soup for a richer, thicker consistency ( before adding the ham) It’s always always like most soups and stews better the next day.❤

Marjoram is the best herb to use in this recipe. Highly recommend to try once. Maybe you will like it. I grow it in pots. Smells divine.

I make it in the pressure cooker. (Instant Pot) I use a pound of half hot, half sweet Italian sausage that I brown first before the veggies, then remove from pan and set aside to add back to the soup after it cooks for 4 minutes in pressure cooker, 10 minute natural release. (saute' the veggies in some of the fat left over from sausage) One box low sodium chicken stock plus 2 cups water. (no evaporation in pressure cooker...). It's my favorite soup of all time and after 3 days in the fridge the flavor is superb. The flavor really does improve if you let it sit in the fridge. I never get tired of split pea soup! Sometimes I use a ham steak but I always add that after the soup is done cooking. I puree' the soup with my immersion blender before adding ham or sausage back too it. A splash of cream at the end as well.

Awe!!! Made me think of my mom! She used to make this after Easter with the left over ham bone. She’s been gone for a few years now. I’m not a big pea fan, but I might just try this recipe.

I made this soup to thank everyone at the "after moving me" party. There was one guy who came up to me and said he didn't like split pea soup. I apologize, but I was moving and had nothing else in the fridge. I told him to try it. It was really good. Later, I saw him with a second bowl or was it his third? It's worth a make. Also, plan to make ham sandwiches on the side. Really good soup and sandwich combo... That way, if you still don't like it, you won't starve! Sending lots of love 💖 from sunny 🌞 Arizona 🌵. Take care of yourself 😷.
