Can’t believe they pulled this on the same day as the solar eclipse. How poetically tragic

The build-up to the release of Splatoon was like nothing else. What an emotional moment this is for many of us. Thank you for everything Splatoon, I will miss you with all my heart and soul. I too played the Testfire back in the day, and my goodness, I would play it for hours on end until Splatoon released! Man, those were the days. What a simpler and more joyous time. I remember pre-ordering the game as a young boy in 2015, and played you for hundreds of hours and hours on end. The sheer excitement, thrills and joy I experienced from it were unfathomable, and I couldn't be more grateful. Split & Splat was always my favourite track in the game, and to this day, my favourite in the series. It was a pleasure to experience the final few hours with players from all across the world on the Nintendo Network. We squid party'd our way to the disconnection message, and will keep on doing so through memory. Splatoon is a staple of my life, part of the encapsulation of my childhood. And of course, forever and ever, it will always stay fresh to me :,)

Great comment. I remember I had the game preloaded and played all night into the morning, then my grandma took me to GameStop to pick up the Splatoon amiibo and wave 4 of the smash amiibo lol. Good times.

Such a great comment. Split and splat is probably the best song except for city of colour which doesnt play in matches tho. I like this game so much that I think about hacking my Wii U because I dont want to lose it. But overall I have 0 understanding why Nintendo shuts down the server now. I would even pay a subscribtion to let them stay online but I guess its just over. Thank you for everything Splatoon may you rest in peace ❤

Heck. I think this game basically carried the Wii U, it was one of THE best selling games for the console considering how badly it did in sales (which is sad cus it’s a fun console)

SPLOON 1

It was so fitting to see people give Splatoon a send-off that was rife with shenanigans, as it should be. It’s amazing how much could be coordinated without a word being spoken. My memories of playing Wii U online will always be cherished, but I will still be playing the system offline now and then. This day in history may be remembered most for a solar eclipse, but us 3DS/Wii U enjoyers will remember it as the day that Nintendo’s free online play died.

weird thing is, there's some players who were able to still play after the map rotation. And are currently still playing!

@@ianeons9278 I read all your comments, and you really failed to defend the Wii U. You might as well of said the N64 was the best, because it was the first to do 3D gaming. The N64 walked, so all future consoles could run! Also 3D world ran a lot slower on the Wii U. Peach moved like a snail, due to the lag! It got fixed on the switch!

@@RetroCheats There was barely any lag on 3D World on the Wii U. It’s a perfectly normal speed compared to other Mario games.

This was really sad to see. I spent my last hours online on 3DS doing adding friend safaris, wonder trading, and GTS trading on Pokemon Y. It's incredibly sad to see the 3DS and Wii U online die, but I'm glad I was at least here to witness it

Same here, I started playing Splatoon in 2020 so I didn’t get to witness the very beginning of it, but I’m glad that I was there to the end, and what an amazing journey it has been so far.

after almost 9 years since the release of First splatoon it has come to an end, crazy to think how it's been almost 9 years since it came out i remember coming back school and the first thing i would do is get on the Wii u to play splatoon, it's crazy how time has gone by and i still remember 2016 as if it was yesterday, was 10-11 now im turning 19, well it was fun while it lasted thank you nintendo

God, seeing Splatoon 1 come to an end makes me wonder how sad it’ll be when that time comes for Splatoon 2 and 3, Splatoon 2 is especially gonna hurt for me cus it was my first game and I’ve been along for the ride every since. It’s gonna be a heartbreaking time when that comes.

Such a surreal experience. The way most people stopped fighting and started messing around was like World War I's Christmas Truce. I was in one lobby where we went in a single-file line, taking turns switching between kid and squid form one at a time from front to back.

Whats so sad about splatoon 1 is that the main point of it was online play.

The shenanigans in those final matches we're so funny! I'm really going to miss this, I know there's the unofficial servers but that's just not the same Imo. I wish I could have played online on my Wii U and 3DS before the shutdown but the Streamer I Mod for is doing really long Streams 6 days a week this month so I was busy Modding. At least there's still the single player modes in Mario Kart/Splatoon/Smash/Pokemon/etc though, so can 100% that if you want to still play them. I might go for it, lol even though I'm terrible at anything not a Jrpg. XD

I remember staying up for this, i was one of the unfortunate people who also got kicked after map change. Thank god pretendo exists however it isn’t stable at all.

I was playing last night and I actually got to play for about an hour after the servers shut down. Weird how it worked.

Glad you captured this! The shutdown is a bummer.

I’m so sad that it’s gone and I’m gonna have to pay like 100 au to buy the stuff to mod it myself it’s so sad

Wait! 1) Protendo has now announced a way in which you can bring back Wii U's online servers to play games like Splatoon again, just by changing the DNS. 2) If you do want to mod your Wii U, you only need a cheap 32GB SD card to actually mod it, and everything else is free, which is very affordable, so don't worry!

They should port it to the switch or next console when it comes out, same with many other classic games and stuff on the wii/wii u

this like 2014 all over again with the nintendo wifi connection shut down for the wii and ds

I’ve played resident evil revelations (3ds) to play all of the stages including the bonus stage for the final time. Then, I’ve played Mario kart 7 for the final hour too.
