The thing to remember about the Spitfire canopy only press the little button to open the canopy, when you shut it do not touch the button. If you do press it the canopy will jam and not release from the outside, only option then was to jettison it to release it then reset it. In the days of BBMF at RAF Coltishall it happened a lot, we got good at resetting them.

I've just discovered this channel as a result of Googling around while reading a book on the history of the Hurricane. I love all the detail, and that each video concentrates on small areas at a time. It makes a fantastic companion to any book on any of the aircraft themselves, allowing a completely different level of visualisation. But even without books, this is great stuff.

Brilliant! I read the spitfire Mk1 pilots manual a few weeks ago and constantly needed to refer to the black and white cockpit photographs which were not that clear. This video explains it so clearly. I can’t wait for the next one. Thank you

What a lot of data for the serious model builder. I'm really enjoying these short presentations with the amazing detail. I could examine photos for hours, but without your explanation I wouldn't have a clue as to what I was seeing. The graphics are very well done and greatly appreciated.

Thank you for these videos. The plane is fascinating plays such an important place in history especially the battle of Britain. My dad was a B17 pilot out if Eye near Ipswich and made it back home. Thanks again.

Hi, great video but you should perhaps start by explaining the difference between early and late MkV canopies ie the external vs internal armoured glass, especially as some of your footage flits between the two. I am familiar with the difference, but many may not be. Looking forward to more of your videos, and will be catching up on the Spitfire ones you have already done. Kind regards, Nick

Thanks, your point is much appreciated and noted. I am generally following the 1942 wartime AP instructions. Being a snap shot in time, mine probably has been updated to not include the earlier windscreen. I appreciate what you say Nick, and will endeavour to try to include additional info when I can.

Hi Brian, enjoyed yet another of your videos. The release of the canopy seems easy. In the recent film Dunkirk a Spitfire ditches in the sea and the pilot struggles to release the canopy as it appears to be stuck, just wondering how realistic this would have been? Thanks again!

Thanks for your feedback and glad you liked the video. I suppose, like any film they like to raise the tension in the viewer. Still it would be true that in a wartime situation, a cannon round could damage part of the release gear in some way that would make jettisoning the hood difficult - if not impossible. Add to that, the fear factor of the situation and it must have been terrifying.

You forgot to mention that there are two types of windscreens (with internal and external armored glass) and two types od hoods on Mk-V ("normal" and a blown type) - and being blown it was not(?) possible to make a knock-out oval panel (needed to equalise air-pressure in case of emergency escape in flight) - thus a crowbar was incorporated on the cockpit door in the same time as the blown-type canopy
