Spitfire Diorama - reed bed crash scene
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
This diorama gave me the opportunity to work with WWS resin, an Airfix Spitfire and, of course, a range of static grass and scatters from WWS, Woodland Scenics and Gaugemaster to create the scene. The reeds were made from paint brush bristles.
This diorama was part of a WWS Facebook competition in February 2022.

I think the fences should have been more broken by looking at the wingspan of the plane but overall, you did a really great job. Congrats
@DartsideScenics

Thanks Iceman. I had to include fencing in the brief but the entire wingspan would've removed most of it. I decided to just knock down where the landing gear crashed through and hoped the wings would've just skimmed over the top of the fence!

@@DartsideScenics Plausible, but if that were the case, the landing gear wouldn't have left such large gouges. When I looked at it, I figured the pilot made a belly landing, and slid through the fence.

It's brilliant, but I suppose as perfection is your game then one might point out that the landing would have been made with the undercarriage up. If down it would have been torn off. Either way the scouring would have been light, caused by the twin air intakes. Canopy open. Propeller, blades either split or bent back, depending on mark, Damage to leading edge of wings at a minimum, and the plane would not have landed straight ahead, but turned to one side to align with the ditch, probably more nose down from the weight of the engine and contour of the land. More fence damage as you have noted. But still spectacular.
Grand job as always

might be nitpicky but there is no damage too the plane to cause an accident... if its war time you'd expect some bullet holes... it looks awesome just missing that final touch

Fantastic job! The scenic elements are probably the best I have seen. Just a couple of points about the aircraft. The propellers usually curl backwards as they are spinning when they hit the ground. And I would have thought the canopy would be open if the pilot had got out?

Thanks Robert. Yes, there are lots of incorrect elements with the aircraft but time was a bit short and my plane crash knowledge isn’t the best! I hope to do another in future and spend a bit more time on those details.

That's a very simple but effective diorama. Great idea for making the reeds! A couple of questions: Roughly what ratio of washing-up liquid to water do you use? And did you record the music yourself? It suits the calm, relaxed style of your commentary very well. I noticed a Gibson case/gig bag in one of your other videos so I suspect you play guitar.
@DartsideScenics

Thanks Ian. I’m not particularly accurate with the washing up liquid but I would say it’s approximately 10%. Yes, I do play the backing music although I really need to record some new tunes! Is that a bass you’re playing in your profile pic.

Excellent model...interesting because there is a story there too... about the pilot and how he was shot down or maybe the crash was due to instrument failure and what happened to him...is he safe in Kent or maybe this is set in Occupied France ( not at all safe ....like the end scene in the recent film Dunkirk ). The mystery adds to the drama of the actual model.

Great detail on the reeds. The Spitfire was a tail dragger and should have a dugin spot on the road. Also the weeds and tufts between the fence and stream should be bent forward where the wing pushed them. I'm guessing gear up landing would have a more dug out area on the road, or toss out a landing gear that broke off. Very well done enjoy your work.

Thanks Dave! No, I didn't but I'm not bitter....😢🤣
Nice. I will say, you should put a story into the model. Why did it crash? Fire? MG fire? Cannons? Add a little damage here and there. A streak of black to simulate oil or smoke stains can go a long way. Hell, go one further and have chunks of the tail or wings missing. Have the pilot in the seat or nearby, or imply they bailed on a more violent crash.
@DartsideScenics
Жыл бұрын
Thank you. Yes, I agree that it would improve it to have a story and some additional detail. I might revisit it in the near future when time allows.
Looks amazing. Just wondering if, since the Spit is a low wing plane, if it would not have created a wider hole when breaching the fence. Although English fences might be tougher than usual ;-)

I'm impressed with the scene and the way it''s put together. I have to applaud the reed bed, it looks very natural. As a matter of fact, I'm gonna steal your method. I'm doing an armor diorama ATM and am beating myself over the head trying to come up with bullrushes. You mentioned in a reply to Iceman that you figured the Spit rolled through the fence on it's gear and then flopped down. That would work but in that case, the landing gear would not have left such large gouges in the earth. To me, it looked like a belly landing. The only other thing, the Spit is too clean, with little or no weathering. I'm curious as to why the canopy is clouded over.
@DartsideScenics

Thank you, it will be great to see your diorama when it’s done. To be honest, this is the first time I have built a spitfire kit and I always have regrets when I finish a diorama. I learn something new every time though so that’s always useful.

@@DartsideScenics I would have left the canaopy open too as the pilot is clearly not still in it. The lack of damage would suggest a forced landing and so he/she would have simply climbed out. A little damage to the wings caused by colliding with the fence would have added to the effect. It is a very good model nevertheless.
@sabrekai8706
2 жыл бұрын
BTW, I just remembered, Douglas Bader, the pilot with tin legs, forgot to change prop pitch on one of his first Spitfire flights. He ran down the length of the field and into a fence at 80 mph. Just another possibility for the why of it. This was during the Phoney War as he was transitioning to Spits. If you haven't read his book "Reach for the sky" go find it. I reread it every few years. This guy should be the dictionary photo for determination. He pranged a Bristol Bulldog while stunting and lost both legs. He recovered, learned to walk again and went on to regain his flying status but was rejected by the RAF and invalided out. Come WWII he walked in the door and told them to retest him. This time they took him back because he PROVED he could fly with the best of them.
Poor guy bought it! Open the canopy, give him a chance!

I have this exact model but I botched it and turned the rudder the wrong way, so instead of it banking into a turn, it would just be skidding across the sky and likely going into a spin. I may try and turn it into a crash, not sure
