Spike T Smith At The Freddie Gee Drum Academy - 2022. (Video Diary, Part One)
www.spiketsmith.com
This was my second visit to teach at this great drum camp. My first being in 2017.
I decided beforehand my days teaching & subject matter this time would be based on the classic punk drum rhythm "The D-Beat"
I feel academically this is still a very undervalued yet critical component of modern high energy drumming, unlike say it's successor "The Blast Beat" which gets much more attention & coverage.
Of course, I didn't want to just cover it in it's basic "Punk" form (although this made for a good starting point relating to it's history etc) as I knew many of the drummers attending would be coming from any number of musical backgrounds.
So, after the initial introduction with demos & student participation we moved onto Melodic ride cymbal pattern ideas. Applying it to jazz. Linear patterns around the kit. A Blast Beat. Odd time signatures. Latin rhythms & the clave. Finally finishing off with a metric modulation 3 over 4 idea. Not bad for something that began as a simple punk beat I'm sure you'll agree.
Anyway, here's a little video diary of the days events. Have a look, you might even be in it!?! Feel free ask any questions & let me know what you think in the comments section below too.
Part two of the evening performance I did to follow soon..

Spike God bless u bro
Having had the absolute pleasure to be in one of those classes watching a master at work at the time, this is an honour to see & hear again. The live performance in the evening was something else. Spike, thanks for some great memories from last year. Roll on Freddie Gee in ‘23.
