Interesting, this was the first iteration where the symbiote had an impact on his personality, it wasn't shown like this in the comics and this has stood the test of time as the definitive symbiote experience in all media since. This is literally the birth of bully maguire Interesting fact: the first time the symbiote influences him in the series is when he is fighting the construction workers and he is persuaded he is simply defending himself, subtle genius.

Absolutely. There are a lot of story cues established in this show that are used in other Spider-Man media. The Brock/Parker rivalry at the Bugle. How Peter gets the symbiote while having a nightmare in the cartoon is recreated almost shot for shot in Spider-Man 3. Octavius being a mentor like figure for Peter. Curt Connors being an ESU professor. Mary Jane being the main love interest as opposed to Gwen. Norman’s dual personality instead of the original “insane but still conscious” archetype (ie, Spectacular GG). And arguably the most important one, the first “Spider-Verse” like event was a trend that first started with this cartoon. It’s not exactly how it is now, but the idea of different Spider-Men from different realities coming together to fight a common threat began with TAS’ season 5 finale. John Semper doesn’t get enough credit for that and hearing him recount how he came up with the idea is quite fascinating.

@@jayguero2123 not only that, it stems from kingpin developing portals with OMN (aka the spot) and the spideys having to stop all realitis from collapsing. I think it also influence the comics where parker's behaviour is more wreckless in some universes where uncle ben didn't die. Semper is a god damn genius and doesn't get anywhere near the credit he deserves for streamlining the mythos.

It didn’t enhance his strength in the original comics either. There’s a mention from villain, an offshoot green goblin that rides around on a springboard, that spider-man’s stronger than he used to be, but it’s unclear whether he means with the symbiote or as he’s gotten older (they’d only fought once, back when peter was a teenager, and peter was an adult now). That’s the only mention of extra strength from the 25 or so issues where peter wore the actual black suit

I like the progression of it. It gets more and more aggressive the longer he has the symbiote.

Fun fact: the whole "symbiote makes you bad" thing was never in the comics. That was something that Stan Lee came up with specifically for this show (he wrote the first part of the Alien Costume three-parter). In the comics, it was actually the host that influences the symbiote. The reason Spider-Man got rid of it is because he found out that it was living off him, which disgusted him.

It thrives on Peter's adrenaline and in return it increases his strength, speed, agility, senses and gives him organic webbing. However, it also makes its host dependent on it over time, which is why it's not a good idea to bond with it.

@@vetarlittorf1807 If Im not mistaken, the "symbiote makes you stronger" also came from this show, in the comics it really was more of a "smart suit" that could heal itself and produce its own webbing which for Peter was already a huge help seeing how webbing was expensive and stitching his costume was a pain in the ass that wasted time and money

The head tilt when he said "You're the main course" was subtle but really added another touch to how scary Spidey got with the symbiote. I think for a lot of us, this show was our introduction to the symbiote/black suit, and they did an excellent job on all fronts.

I totally agree with you there. This show was my introduction to most of the modern Spider-Man mythology. As I got older I came to appreciate how they adapted storylines from the past decades like Spidey losing his memory and teaming up with Doc Ock, as well as more modern arcs like the Clone Saga and Ben Reilly.

Honestly, I prefer the comics where the symbiote wasn't outright malicious until Peter rejected it. Both because it fits with Peter being a continual screw-up who makes his own villains and because it makes Venom a more tragic character too since Eddie always struggled with being 2nd best to Peter and because the symbiote is treating him the same way Peter treated it it feeds into that insecurity. Never been a fan of the symbiote being evil.

To this day, the transformation at 0:10 is one of my absolute favourite of all time across any medium. The voice, the pose, the animation, perfection all-around. The shift in Peter's behaviour and demeanor is already noticeable, he can't wait to take revenge on Rhino, which is one of the emotions the symbiote likes the most. And he lays a legendary beating on him.

It’s always been a favourite trope of mine when villains freak the hell out when their typical view of the hero’s morals get shaken. make fun of this guy all you want. You can't deny he had a rare level of commitment to his role. Dude puts his all into every line and the delivery sticks. That's why this is so memorable. What I've always loved about Symbiote Spider-Man and him not holding back from killing the villains is.. That concept is legitimately terrifying. When Spider-Man beats you, you can at least rest easy knowing he's not going to kill you. He has a moral code. He'll never do that. Take that away? That's when real fear sets in.

When i first heard this my favorite line was “SHOCKERRRRRR” but after some rewatching. I decided it’s “I AM INVINCIBLE”. It just delivers this absolute stance in confidence that Spider-Man is no longer to be f-ed with.

It's cool how the longer he's with the symbiote the more menacing he gets. Just look hear the difference from start to finish.

Considering how many times spidey gets whipped, it’s nice to see him kick ass and take names.

Best symbiote spiderman adaptation.

Spider-Man getting mad at Shocker is memeworthy, but I really like the menace in the scene where he's about to beat Rhino to death with that steel door. It feels a lot more unsettling.

There was no censorship, spiderman and a lot of characters on here threw punches and kicks. The reasons that's not the main combat was a creative choice to make the series fights feel different. The director of the show came forward and stated he personally hates when people say it was censored.

@Tomn8er you realize Batman the animated series was being aired at the same time as Spiderman with the same restrictions right? If Batman was allowed to get away with punching spiderman was as well, and as the director stated there was never editorial censorship spiderman rarely gave a punch because they didn't want him to as a creative choice. also, I'm not saying it didn't have restrictions as a kid's show what I'm saying is those restrictions are blatantly being over-hyped despite being the same as every other kid's show in the '80-'90s

You should've been more specific to which Spider-Man 2 you were referring to!

People keep talking about “I’ll Chase you to the Ends of the EAARTHHHH!!” And “And I’m going tear you Limp From Limp!” But I think this one hits quite hard too “That’s funny, I give up too…..I GIVE UP TRYING TO BE A FRIENDLY NEIGHBORHOOD SPIDER-MAN!!” Goosebumps 😃🥶🥶

Yeah, that one's a great line. Especially brutal when he's talking to a surrendering enemy whom he's about to brutalize. Now, to be critical (but with good intentions), it's "limb from limb." A limp is when you try to walk with an injured or crippled leg, while being limp is when something has no stiffness or control - like if your arm falls asleep and you can't move it, it's limp because you can't make it tighten and function. Your limbs are your appendages, your arms and legs. So when he's saying he'll tear someone limb from limb, he's saying he'll pull that person apart, ripping off his arms and legs. Pretty horrific imagery.

You can’t escape MEEE! I’ll chase you to the END OF THE EARRRTTHHHH!!!” Infinitely quotable. Lost none of its impact over the years. Certifiable classic!!!

What's crazy about this personality, is how much of this was Peter's inner desires amplified? Coming to the surface. And then later on that is the symbiote talking. How his choice of words gradually grow more aggressive and violent the more he wore it. Good storytelling about addiction and substance abuse too. Which was a topic in the nineties explored with mixed results. This one was one of best stories that told a good message along with a good story.

Debatable but he was good. 1960s wasn't bad either he was unintentionally hilarious

I like how it initially is just a suit, vs immediately all teeth and huge hulking muscles

In my opinion this is best version of black suit spiderman He is serious and menace, also symbiote make him a lot stronger He is truly villain

I liked how he made the villains dread the idea of what he intended, seeing someone they batter and pressure so many times had that intention of murdering them... even if not going forward with it.

You can tell the voice actor was having a lot of fun with this.

Christopher Daniel barnes is such a legendary spider-man when I read the old spidey comics his voice is in my head constantly

I can’t emphasise enough how stellar the music composition in the 90s cartoons was, and this show is no exception.

I remember being a kid and actually feeling BAD for Rhino when he begged for his life! Like, it was the first time I realized that "bad guys" were not just obstacles, but people.
