I recently got the chance to play through and analyse Spider-Man Remastered on PC, four years after the original PS4 release in 2018 blew me away with the focus of its open world design-a rarity in the genre. Not only was it a blast to play, but this focus meant that every single element of the game was used to convey some element of Spider-Man/Peter Parker's character, right down to the load screens-which now, thanks to SSDs and the PC release, some players might never see. Thankfully, as this analysis/review will go into, Spider-Man Remastered is so mechanically and narratively robust that, even four years later, it remains a high watermark for not just open world design, but Spider-Man as a whole.
A WORD ON SPOILERS: This Spider-Man Remastered analysis discusses certain plot points and characters (including DLC), so viewer discretion is advised. Maybe play the game then come back if you want to go in blind.

The Peter face change was actually to line it up better with the voice actor, Yuri Lowenthal's face for better facial capture performances, or at least that is the official statement from Insomniac about it.

VERY ENDING SPOILERS Since Uncle Ben is a confirmed part of the universe, we have to assume Peter made the wrong choice to allow him to die, and that made him become Spiderman. Therefore the ending where he's faced with the Sadistic Choice between curing a viral disease and curing Aunt May (though be it somewhat forced) is a bit of a gutpunch to that origin. Even if Peter makes the right choice, the people he loves still suffer or die. That's a very good set up for a sequel with Black Suit Spiderman, who is the inversion of the Great Power:Great Responsibility dynamic. Hopefully the next game's cool.

I hope in the sequel they put more attention into post-story/side missions, and significantly reduce the pointless filler missions. Literally all of them lead to the exact same scenario: Beating up a stupid amount of criminals. The swinging is prettymuch automatic The camera needs work, has no reset direction option and lock on needs to be better The combat is fun but needs work because nothing propperly combos and hit detection is so floppy Stealth sections made me not want to play anymore and stealth is one of my favorite genres Good game with plenty to enjoy but I'm hopeful for some improvements in the sequel

To be fair, I didn't have any problem with the collection aspect of the gameplay when I got into the later part of the story because I had cleared all but the Challenges at that point. I did all of exploration and collection aspect of the game as early as possible. It helped me get used to the web swinging mechanics and geographical landmarks and reference points and it just felt like something Peter would wanna get out of the way asap, for convenience because the city is his sandbox and distances are totally relative to him, and because he's the kind of guy to get carried away at work until he finishes as task. I think the gameplay really grounded the character to the city, for me, to the point where going from Chinatown to Harlem is but a couple web swings away - and yet, the irony of taking the subway to "fast travel" is also not lost on me, it's not really faster travel for Spidey, it's more like "comfort" travel for him, when he gets tired of swinging around, he takes the subway like a good new yorker and checks on his social media, takes a quick nap. I cleared the bases like this, I only moved forward in the story after clearing the Demon bases, because it felt natural to do: let's break their system first then expose them at the center of it all. The gameplay makes being a "completionist" very streamlined and engaging, I don't have the same disposition in Assassin's Creed games, not only because of a large quantity disparity, but because 99% of tasks involved do have some sort of meaning to the character of the city you are trying to help, so yea, Harry, I'll look into bird poo, sure, but only because you're my buddy and it's gonna help NY, man.

Got this game free on steam, sold a bunch of old TF2 and CSGO items in my inventory. Best free game I've ever played. Blown away by the narrative, I did all of the side content as it came up, so by act 3 I was basically just going mission to mission until the very end, so I imagine my experience was a bit more smooth than some others'. The conclusion to this game is the type of conclusion you desperately want to talk to other people about, but most of your friends either haven't played the game or played it years ago and are over it, so you settle for watching people on youtube react to it instead. I'd probably put this up there with Elden Ring and Kirby as the best games I've played this year.

I remember that vanilla game story hitting hard, and 100%-ing this game, but then when I sat back and thought about it all, I decided I didn't like it very much and didn't want to revisit it again. This video really helped me rethink that. You kinda detail all the reasons I think I felt sour on it towards the end, but also highlight some things that remind me that at some point I did feel like this version of Spider-Man might just have been the best we've seen across all media, even the Tobey Maguire movies. I've always loved Spider-Man, so that was a special feeling I had lost recollection of until now. This was a really good video. All your videos are really good, but this one did something cool for me, changed my mind about something I had written off and cleared my mind of doubts about whether or not to reinvest money and time in the PC port.

Great video, I can see how this game might not feel that great for some given its trappings with design clichés in the open world mainly, but aside from that, everything you said is exactly why I consider this game to be the most solid blueprint/framework and the most versatile as well for games in this genre, while it still is mainly about the power fantasy, it tries to mechanically communicate to the player the other aspects of the hero's life, the only thing that is missing for me is that it needs more of the burden of being a hero mechanically, but of course that is adding frustration intentionally to the game, which I don't have a problem with and that's exactly the reason why I don't have a problem with the MJ and Miles stealth sections, but to other people, well, it's not about that.

Would like to see improvements in the camera focus in combat, stuff happening off screen only to be shown with a spider sense "batman arkham" style reaction might have been useful for those large scale battles but got repetitive and boring especially as the game is mostly within those moments. Spider Gadgets and upgrades/suit shit felt odd and like a skip button, use gadget = enemies dealt with, felt like there wasn't enough thought put into them and didn't even look that good, can't we get something that ties multiple people together which allows to sweep everyone off their feet + other stuff? Traversing was fun but you had 4 tricks and maybe 4 ways of using webs and wall running on buildings - make that web flexible/tangible and let me swing around object/Ad Signs with a higher force by forcing my web onto them and slinking myself away at the last second. Add near misses/fall damage even - didn't let go of the webs fast enough eat the windows of a building, missed the button to wall run on the building make me look like I am slipping or don't wall run, just add things that add player agency or a button to switch off that auto pilot. I get it adding some things that move away from auto pilot could be negatively affecting the user experience but this auto pilot model is getting super old for me, other people might love it but I will always advocate for more freedom in ability to traverse/combat and to use the world around you.

Just finished the game on PC for the first time, and will be tackling the DLC's next. I really liked the game, the NYC that Insomniac have built is really impressive and the Spider Man's web singing is the best it's ever been in a video game imo. It's quite immersive especially with the ray tracing the game looks really good. The writing was for the most part pretty good and found myself invested in the main story. The side missions left a bit to be desired and the typical collectathon's like the lab researches, the pigeon capturing etc is played out by todays standards and I can see how some people would find it repetitive and unexciting and it wouldn't be a big deal if you could skip it but you need to do these tasks in order to upgrade your gadgets and unlock more suits. For me though I didn't really mind it despite the repetitiveness because there was a reward at the end of the tunnel and traveling around NYC as Spider Man was quite entertaining, I never used the fast travel system lol. I can see others finding this kind of boring but it is technically a remaster of an older game so. It's definitely good game.

I can agree far as the story, but the swinging didn't really blow me away given it's essentially just a prettied up version of TASM 2's already solid swinging system. They even reused some of the side mission scenarios, gadgets, and narrative ideas in this one - TASM 2 ends with Fisk rising to power, while this one sees his downfall, for instance. Not knocking Insomniac for pulling those into their own work, I just would've preferred Beenox get some of the credit. Plus, the random crimes in SM Remastered aren't really that impactful. At least in TASM 2 and Web of Shadows, there was a moral consequence that led to unique gameplay outcomes for ignoring that sort of thing - there you REALLY feel the tug of it in a way that matters. While I'm glad you got something out of it here, the system isn't half as deep. The exact same sort of auto-generated crimes existed in games as far back as Arkham Origins.

Man it's hard seeing reviews that aren't OMG the swinging is the best thing since sliced bread, 10/10 masterpiece. Random crimes as you said have existed for a long time even in the PS2 era. Sure they weren't as diverse because of the limited hardware but they were still there As for swinging, it's not really mind-blowing, it's just a mixture of the Spider-Man 2 and 3 system alongside the TASM 2 game one. Point launch/zip to point feels like a less wonky version of web rush from TASM and swinging carries the same formula from Spider-Man 2 and 3 where you press R2 and X but unlike those games the depth isn't as much

  • @UnabridgedGamer

    @UnabridgedGamer

@@DatPRGuy2017 Precisely - it's not that any of the systems here are bad, but the main reason they're going over so well with Insomniac's take is down to them having such an immense budget and time to actually execute on those ideas. Beenox had loads of talent that could've reached comparable heights, but they were working under the insane crunch and tight budgets of Activision's license tie-in pipeline. You can really see the difference with Treyarch's work too - Spider-Man 3 damn near broke them, while their final swing with Web of Shadows let them actually have room to breathe. I just hope more folks look back at the earlier 3D Spider-Man games and still appreciate what they did right. They deserve to be known as more than footnotes to this game.

And it may just be distance, but this seems so much worse. Maybe it's because with the others, there's a set path, and if you screw it up, you can eventually learn the path and get it. But as far as I can see, the chases here (especially those fucking birds!) are much more random.

It is interesting that you bring up 'The Avengers' as its failure really does drive home the fact that adapting a franchise is about a lot more than just getting the look, it also has to play and feel like a proper adaptation. While it is largely considered a "meme" now, the whole "feel like Batman" thing really does express something important. When the Arkham games came out, it was pretty clear that Rocksteady wanted to make a game series that let the player really step into the role of Batman in a story that felt like a Batman comic. They didn't just grab some generic popular game format and paint a thin layer of Batman on the top, they built the game from the ground up to let you "feel like the Batman". As a result, the Arkham games are still popular and well regarded to this day. Even the one that experienced the most controversy has aged rather well in the eyes of gamers. People like those games because they are laser focused on being Batman games that reflect fully on the Batman comic experience. Spider-Man is a lot like the Arkham games (in more ways than mechanics). Everything about it FEELS like it was built to convey the Spider-Man experience. It isn't like Jedi: Fallen Order where they clumsily shoehorn some generic Dark Souls style mechanics into a vague Star Wars framework. It isn't like The Avengers where it is really just a loot based beat-em-up GaaS with only some character models/skins to tell you that you are playing a Avengers tie-in. Spider-Man was built to be a Spider-Man game and nothing else. It says something that some of the more timeless games end up being the ones that invest as much as possible into player immersion. Maybe there is something to that.

@@OttoWatt9000 If you liked it then you liked it. For me, it felt disjointed in that the first and last level had a fairly convincing Star Wars narrative flow but everything in between shifted very heavily towards a sort of Dark Souls influenced "mechanics above all else" experience that had a lot of Star Wars imagery, sounds, and the like but didn't really capture the basic structure of Star Wars. Here is the thing. When I think of a really good Star Wars game, I think of the older Jedi Knight titles (or even Dark Forces before them), the older X-Wing/Tie-Fighter titles, and even The Knights of the Old Republic and its sequel. In those games, the gameplay and narrative flow all contributed to a distinctly Star Wars feel. You could tell that there were influences but they were often mixed in very, very effectively with the Star Wars elements. Your bit about Star Wars not "being one thing" is correct but there is one thing it always is. Cinematic. Star Wars has always and will always be something that is built around evoking classic cinema (be it WWII films, Kurosawa epics, or even the more modern emphasis on classic/iconic westerns). I know this is sometimes arbitrarily considered a dirty word in gaming but Star Wars MUST be cinematic to feel like Star Wars. This brings us to Jedi: Fallen Order's biggest failing. On one hand, you have the first and last level really reasonably nailing down that cinematic Star Wars feel pretty effectively. It is linear (not really a bad thing in games despite what the internet might want you to think) and allows the character moments, drama, and narrative progression to shine through. The escape from Bracca had that Star Wars pacing and Star Wars sense of adventure. The final battle on Nur had a similar mix of elements that really drove home the Star Wars feel. You could even make a pretty good argument that Ilum also provides a lot of that distinctly Star Wars feel due to its more linear structure and defined story beats. The problem comes when one plays any other part of the game. Suddenly all those tightly constructed, distinctly Star Wars like moments are all but removed in favor of painting a thin coat of Star Wars on top of some fairly generic feeling Souls/Metroidvania concepts. You have the forced backtracking, the very, very gamey enemies, and even "meditation points" that are overt, rather lazy reskins of the bonfires. In the older Star Wars games I talked about, they obviously drew inspiration from other games and genres but they always found ways to really integrate those elements into the Star Wars framework in a natural feeling way. Now. If you like Souls games, Metroidvania's or even think that games should be mechanically focused experiences above all else, I could see how Jedi: Fallen Order might be appealing. For me, I wanted a Star Wars experience but all I really got was a lot of obvious cashing in on the Souls trend sandwiched between two VERY thin pieces of decent Star Wars gaming. Hopefully the sequel leans more into Star Wars elements instead of just checking off the souls trend boxes.

Unfortunately i don't think the quote ''gameplay aiding narrative'' holds up very well in this game. There is a lot of talk about this being the defining spider-man game that makes u feel like spider-man but i think that holds up only half of the way. While the game give u the powers of Spider-man and allows u to swing and fight through New York like you've never done before, the game does not really give u as the player any agency on the outcome in any scenario. It does not provide the actual responsibility of the player being Spider-man. I know the idea of their being an outcome for any scenario u fail is asking for the impossible but as far as this game goes i don't think it actually captures the essence of Spider-man rather than taking the run of the mile Ubisoft formula combined with the Arkham series.

To an extent, sure, but the same can be said about Arkham for example, does it really make you feel like Batman, then, if all the Arkham games are mainly power fantasies of being a ripped billionaire doing cool beatdowns on enemies? The aspect of Bruce's trauma and his forming of the batfamily as a way to give himself another family are not a part of the core design of the game. I think it's better to accept that there's no superhero game that will truly give you that with Spider-Man, nor with Batman, because that is inherently adding frustration intentionally to the game, Spider-Man you could argue at least has some of that frustrating aspect by forcing you to do things you don't necessarily want to do, like the stealth missions with civilians that happen to be Peter's loved ones, but there's not denying that it is mainly power fantasy still, but like I said, the same is true for Arkham to a greater extent. The only way I can see a fully fleshed superhero experience existing with all its nuances, even allowing itself not to be fun, is the indie market, that's too much to ask for Marvel, DC, PlayStation, WB Games that want to be in every household.

@@eldelasdonaschurros1243 The point does apply for the Arkham series as well. But asylum was one of the first video games that tries to create the immersion of the player feeling like a super hero. But the formula was repeated I think too many times with minimal changes apart from better graphics and bigger worlds. At the same time in 2009 Infamous actually showed that u could make a game where ur actions actually could have some consequences on ur moral and ur outcomes. Be that a bit binary but it was quiet innovative for the time in AAA standards. And I feel like the same design could be applied to Spider-Man as well if u just shorthanded the games play length. Like some npc’s could die or live depending on ur outcome. The social network (that’s in the game) could have a positive or negative feed depending on how u perform as Spider-Man. Jonah Jameson could have more segments the more u failed at stoping crimes. The sky was kind of the limit there!

@@vonderdrake9796 With some changes it could work for sure, but the game will not be for everyone and will garner criticism for forcing you to do it X or Y way, which I don't have a problem with, however most people will have, like I said, this is something you have to do indie if you really want it, Web Of Shadows did the moral compass thing, but the problem was that Spider-Man isn't a morally gray character, so you cannot achieve the same thing as Infamous that was a tad more ambiguous in that sense and the characters were meant to be a reflection of the player's actions and not an individual that also existed beyond those boundaries as a fully fleshed persona. With Spider-Man, regardless of anything, the gameplay still must be forced to maintain the characterization of Spider-Man, for example, that was the issue with WoS and TASM2 with the hero/menace system, that Spider-Man could essentially behave out of character, the fix could be to add a fail state for every crime or person you don't save, and make the crimes appear less often and such so that it won't happen every single time. As for Asylum, I'm not so sure though, the game came out after many, many, many games prior that were essentially the same thing, and just a year before, Web Of Shadows despite its flaws, was mechanically and narratively more interesting to my eyes than Asylum, so I hold Rocksteady to the same standard of not being quite there yet. But I agree overall, the sky is the limit, as long as you don't have to accommodate for everybody and aim for that niche that wants to feel truly the fun and burden in equal parts of being a hero.

Always liked this game well enough, but not nearly as much as most people seemed to. Too many check boxes and task lists, the boss battles lacked any freedom, you had to do this one certain thing over and over to damage them. No cool ways to improvise. Enemy encounters were samey, with every phase of the game throwing the same mobs of dudes at you over and over and over where you take them out the same way every time. There's a lot of moves and gadgets to play around with but most of them are useless once you figure out the most efficient way to get rid of enemies. The swinging was great for sure, and the world itself felt alive, though there's not much of substance that you just stumble upon, like random story encounters that aren't clearly marked for you on the map. Yep, stealth sections suck cock, just as they do in almost every single action game that crams them in. Also, maybe this is a hot take but I'm very disappointed that they changed their Peter Parker's face. I liked the original one that Insomniac made specifically because he wasn't Tom Holland. Nothing against Holland, I love those movies, but if I wanted MCU stuff I'd watch the movies, theirs felt unique in comparison. Now we got Dollar Tree Tom Holland. He looks too young for this point of Peter's life. It feels like the Dollar Tree MCU Avengers in that horrible game. Why do these companies feel afraid to divert too far away from the MCU? Well if course because MCU properties are proven money makers. Overall fun and worth a play but it felt like a linear game in open world clothes. With lots of little unimportant side crap to tackle whenever you feel like taking a break from the story. Same problem as many open world games. Would be so much better if they let people have a little more freedom when it comes to the main story, and a little more diversity in the enemies and ways to kill bosses.
