    My favorite bit of dialog that changes meaning on a replay is from Aunt May. After the party at Feast she calls Peter and says that she's always wondering in she doing right in his eyes. On first playthrough it's just her speaking as a concerned parent. But when you know she knows Peter is Spider-Man it becomes her wondering how she looks through the eyes of a hero.

    I thought of that too on my other playthroughs as well. In addition the dialogue before the prison break out when she talks to Peter about his relationship with MJ and stating that “does she know the real you?” This statement hints that she knows Peter is Spider-Man.

    I appreciate how Otto's progression is seemingly kept open and vague enough for there to be multiple answers based on the various takes on his psyche in media. It's a nice way to let fans determine their own answer but still show his gradual reveal as a villain. However I do personally think Otto wasn't so much corrupted but more was always somewhat riding that morally grey line even in his youth. I think a lot of his time at Oscorp both made him question what he was doing along with fostering a growing resentment to Norman. With the accident with Martin being what broke the camel's back. I think at one point he wanted to turn things around and become a better man but his body failing him along with other struggles, especially those put on him by Norman, eventually made him feel it wasn't worth it so he just succumbed to his flaws and became a villain. So while I do think a lot of his struggles were mental I don't think it was just the risky neural interface, I think at most it just accelerated issues he already had. Even before he became unstable I think in the back of his mind he was having these dark thoughts and unlike Li it wasn't fully just an outside negative force bringing it out of a good man and suppressing the good. Otto I do think was always selfish, even when he had good intentions and for him if he couldn't achieve his goals and get what he wanted by sticking to a moral code then he'd rather regress and get a better chance at revenge and preventing him from being limited by his declining then deal with the aftermath later.

  • @alwaysnerdyretros

    @alwaysnerdyretros

    8 ай бұрын

    I like that perspective a lot too! I think you’re right that Otto likely had negativity bubbling up under the surface, and the neural interface helped bring it to the forefront

  • @Shift_Salt

    @@alwaysnerdyretros yeah it's my preferred take since it feels very grounded and human. No crazy lab accident suddenly making someone flip, just a ton of stressful factors and small things adding up that tests someone's resolve. If Otto could be like Peter and let it change him for the better not push him to be worse then maybe there'd be hope for him. But if he's meant to serve as a dark reflection of Pete then I definitely say this kinda view of his decline best show cases that. Peter took his greatest loss as a sign to be better and stuck to it even when he was losing someone important to him all over again. And he used it as further encouragement to do good and continue those peoples' memories and legacy while also starting his own and becoming a mentor for someone young he saw a lot of himself in as well.

    One pint in favor of this is how quickly he was able to get in touch with and get funding from aim and contact each of the big villains for his sinister six and get everything set up, the neural interface couldn't have been fully developed before that ball started rolling as that funded the arms and the neural interface

    2:49:02 I love this scene, not only because it sets up the MM game and story really nicely, but also because there's a really funny thought that isn't covered. Both of them have spider-strength, but are both pretending that the desk is heavy so that the other doesn't suspect anything

    Yup that's true. Reminds me of that scene at the beginning of Spiderman Homecoming when Tony drops off Peter at home and you can see Happy in the background struggling to carry the suitcase with Peters suit in it, suggesting that it's very heavy for even a grown man. But when Peter leaves and takes the suitcase he carries it effortlessly with one hand like it's nothing.

    I love the message of this game that you don’t need great power to help others and no act of kindness is too small. As annoying as most people find the pigeon sidequests, I have a soft spot for them because how it represents that message and Spider-Man’s genuine love for New York. Side note: Sunset Overdrive also had a hallucination/floor is lava/ find a cure mission that ends with the protagonist (voiced by yuri lowenthal if you play as male) in their underwear

    One thing about the lab I don't think I noticed until my most recent playthrough is that to the left of the "defense prototypes" Otto claims to be making for A.I.M., there's a TV screen with schematics for a jet engine on it. Come back after the Sinister Six assemble and you'll see that it was designed for Vulture's flight suit. That means he was designing gear for all four members of the Sinister Six aside from himself and Li. Personally I think he was always planning the breakout after getting defunded, but he was conflicted about it. If you listen to his recordings in his staging ground, he was planning it for some time before Li was arrested. His final recording even outright states to Peter that he genuinely thought he was doing the right thing. He also tries to push Peter away multiple times, such as after he tells Peter about his diagnosis. Then after he turns off the neural interface and sends Peter out, he says "Thank you Peter... for everything" as if he's saying goodbye forever, knowing that what he's about to do will destroy their friendship.

    Another great video! As for the Shocker bit, while I agree that he's underutilized in the larger scheme, the Demons using him make sense. He's basically a distraction, keeping Spider-Man busy while the Demons do other things. If they used someone random to rob banks by mind controlling them, Spider-Man and the police might've caught on quickly to the plan, but with Shocker, they'd assume he was doing it on his own. Sure, Spidey figures out that Shocker is working for someone, but that's mostly because Shocker mispoke and accidentally revealed more than he should've.

  • @alwaysnerdyretros

    @alwaysnerdyretros

    Thank you! And that's a good point! I think you're right that he could have just been a good distraction. I think my complaint is mostly that wanted Shocker to feel a bit more important in the grand scheme, since as it stands, he kinda feels more like a side mission, and he probably could have been cut without any detriment to the story.

    I personally think Otto was always like this and it wasn’t until the bomb attack that he became inspired. I think that’s the point of the hallucination sequence and Peter’s revisit. Otto was scheming and there were red flags indicating this, but Peter’s hero worship blinded him from them. I think the whole “arms COULD affect his personality” was a misdirect to make it initially feel it’s doing the same thing as Spider-Man 2 before that part. At least my take on it.

    Biggest issue I have with the face change is, if they really deemed it necessary, they should've waited until settling on something to stick to. It's jarring to change it after a whole game of it being the normal face and not giving players the option to choose the new one as an alternative for the original game in an update. By just relegating it to a very sudden "Remastered Version" it leaves a bad taste in players' mouths going forward. Looking back at the final scenes with Otto and Aunt May's death as well though, yeah I prefer the original face. Was way more expressive imo.

    I very much prefer the comic actress/model version of Mary Jane. It’s more classic first of all, but what’s more abnoxious is the amount of every other journalist superhero or superhero love interest tripes. It made MJ unique in that she didn’t share the exact same profession as many other superhero characters like Lois Lane, Iris West, Clark Kent, etc.

  • @HeyFella

    Agreed. It also bugs me how people reduce Mary Jane in the Raimi films to a “damsel in distress” when really she’s an incredibly realistic woman with actual dreams and desires. Getting saved by the hero isn’t a problem if they’re still allowed to be a fleshed out grounded person. Sometimes giving characters more “agency” in this tough go getter way actually makes them less interesting and more generic.

    10:40 Honestly, this type of dynamic is probably my favorite view on how Norman really sees Harry, much of Stan Lee and Gerry Conway showed Osborn that he does care about Harry, but own ego makes situation worse. The Spectacular Spider-man put it best: "I protected Harry, if I had been sent to prison who would made a man out of him?" after revealing that he framed Harry being Green Goblin and breaking his leg to sell the illusion. I blame flanderization of that logic on Raimy movies and abomination that is Sins Past.

    1:14:51 I thought Peter had died here too and that's because in the comics Peter actually does die in an explosion, Miles sees it happen and that's what makes him become Spiderman. I was further convinced this might be happening when we start playing as Miles. I thought we just switched over to our new protagonist.

    They aren't the only games to do this, but an underrated part of the design of the Insomniac Spider-Man games is that more often than not, the buttons the game asks you to press during quick time events match the action Spidey takes during the sequence.

    This game means a lot to me. I was 23 when it came out, same age as Peter, and during my playthrough, my mom died. She and I loved Spiderman, she taught me how to read using Spidey comics, we went to see all of the movies in theaters together staring with the OG in 2002. She even used the "great power comes great responsibility" line in her classroom as a teacher every year. I'd send her screenshots or clips and she loved the game and thought it was so cool to get such a good Spidey story where I got to be my hero in such a realistic and honest way. I hadn't gotten to the end of the game yet, and when the pain died down a bit, I continued and when May says she always knew, but was proud of him for being the man she always knew he could be, and that even faced with an impossible choice, she knew he would make the right decision, that really messed me up.

    1:52:03 There is actually another hint that Michael Morgan could be Morbius, Peter’s bio mentions that Michael’s email mention that he was originally Greek and his name was originally “Michaelopoulos” or a something to that effect. Morbius in the comics is actually Greek(which a lot people may forget as he tends to be changed to American in most adaptations) and Was born Greece, so it’s a possibility when combined with everything!

    I like how people compared Spider-Man stopping the helicopter during the Fisk/Demon fight to the red banned Spider-Man trailer from 2001 because of the whole 9/11 thing. If you use the Rami suit, you can actually get somewhat close to that scene. In my mind, it really shows how much of an emotional impact both 9/11 and Spider-Man have, but that's just probably me.
