It's a degenerative disease. Hawking was able to move just fine well into adulthood, and you can even find online a photo from his first wedding where he's standing next to his wife and only using a cane. Given time. Doc Octavius would eventually be just like Hawking. That being said, there are different forms of ALS, and Hawking was "lucky" that he had a form that was so slow moving that he was able to live as long as he did. Most don't live that long.

ditto. just the difference in the ways he utters the words "you knew" you can see as he cycles through sorrow over things turning out like this, feeling betrayed that a man he came to see as a father figure would do this to him, to sheer anger that all of this suffering, not just from peter himself but for may, mj, miles, all these people that are suffering, is because otto and li just want revenge on a single man. and not only that, but otto himself knew the pain he was going to bring peter and still did what he did. it'd be hard not to turn ruthless at that point.

This script for this game is incredible. During the fight Otto say's something to the effect of "you haven't suffered like I have" and I was actually full of rage for Peter at that point. Like how much more selfish could Otto be that he claims to have seen Peter as a son but doesn't recognize that Peter has suffered as much or more than he has? That's how you know that Otto was full of shit all game and that it was always about his ends, never about Peter. Also, that line serves to highlight why Peter and Otto make such good enemies. Both are brilliant men who have suffered tremendously throughout their lives, but while Otto is ultimately broken by his pain (like the weak man that he is) Peter continues to be Spider-Man, despite all the suffering that his powers have caused him. Earlier in the game when Peter gets poisoned he keeps hallucinating and all the things that Scorpion and Otto taunt him with are actually Peter's greatest insecurities. Spider-Man is defined by his suffering and by his fear that he's a failure and that he only hurts the people he's trying to help.

I don't think Otto is weak per se. They are similar, indeed - but they come from different places. Otto didn't have loving parent figures, teaching him what is good. Otto didn't have supermodel-like Gwens, Lizes and Mary Janes flocking around him. Otto weren't bitten by a radioactive invertebrate, granting him awesome powers and self-respect. You switch them, and they would easily become alternates of themselves. Superior Spider-man series gave us a hint of that.

That's the whole point of Spider-Man. Anyone can be good when it's easy. Between the tremendous amounts of loss he's experienced and how hard up he is for cash there is every reason for Peter to abuse his powers, but he doesn't. And I vehemently disagree with your view of Superior Spider-Man. I absolutely love the reveal of Octavious in this game. He wasn’t featured in the advertising once, so him being in the game was a complete surprise. The game begins with a comic accurate costume for Spider and same for Kingpin, so when Otto’s silhouette is in the lab and we see someone with a lab coat and four tentacle like metal wires in his back, our instinct tells us it’s Doc Ock. But no, it’s a friend of Peters

He still did everything he did; releasing supervillains, spreading a supervirus, killing who knows how many people. I feel like the last time I saw the real Otto was when Peter convinced him to turn it off himself in the full 4-arm reveal. He relented for a moment, and even though it was short lived, it seemed genuine. But then again, right after, the way he looked at him and smiled, waving him away saying that he'll keep at it and work out some bugs, it seemed kind of, well, sinister... and I can't help but wonder if his momentary hesitation was actually just him realizing that he needs to be more subtle to not alarm Peter too much and expose his intentions. I guess that's a testament to how well this entire character arc was. It's hard to tell exactly where the Otto that Peter idolized stopped showing up, and when he was fully replaced by Doc Ock, or if he was even gone altogether. Heck, even at the very end, I was starting to wonder if some of the old Otto was showing up one last time. It feels like you can still see glimpses even up to the end of the story, but sometimes the way it's delivered makes you wonder if it's a facade or if it's sincere. It's so well done, hats off to everyone involved.

I feel genuinely bad that how things turn out in the end. The relation between Otto and Peter was so sincere in my eyes about they deeply cared each other with mutual respect that at the end of the story, I couldn't even dare call him "Doctor Octopus" because it's too insulting that this portrayal of "Doctor Octavius" is so heartbreaking, it's like losing a friend turning into your worst enemy. I would even say that Insomniac did a great job for the reimagining of the caracther to his downfall ... I mean look at 20:07, this pause that is silent but says "I'm so sorry ..." because he knew that Spider-man was Peter...

On the one hand I agree with you, on the other I don't. In the end, I think Octavius did care for Peter in his own warped way. But the fact is, he knew he was Spider-man from the moment he saw him with the costume. Then throughout the course of the game, armed some of his greatest enemies who had no qualms with killing him in the past, against him. Purposely endangering Peter's life. When Peter realized that fact, I'm sure he started to wonder how much the Otto he knew was the inhibitor chip, and how much was it the real Otto. Tragic tale, no doubt about it. But Otto was still very much a monster for what he did.

@Velocerbate The comics one is pretty significant at this point as well. Sure he's not some tragic sob story but Superior Spider-Man is one of the best Spidey and Doc Ock stories of all time since it peels back the layers and deconstructs Spidey and Octavius as characters. I'm honestly hoping they use that story in these games at some point since Doc Ock is established as already losing his motor functions. I could definitely see him going after Peter's body and becoming Superior Spidey by swapping minds since his arms already failed.

I still think the reveal of Octavius alone was amazing. When I heard Peter's working at a lab and he gets a call from a doctor my immediate response was "Cool, Kurt Conners is in the game. Wonder if we'll get Lizard." And then I see the wires mimicking the arms and my jaw drops. Doc Ock's in the game. With Conners Lizard is a possibility, with Octavius Doc Ock is inevitable.

Otto's gradual decay into insanity in this is considerably nuanced, human and believable being as it's determined by a number of things, i.e. his mind deteriorating, his limb condition worsening that therefore continued to drive further his obsession of wanting to improve his body which integrally leads him becoming increasingly influenced by the neural hub interface as it damages his brain. However, in the Spider-Man 2 movie Otto's downfall was down to the hub neural control chip being destroyed at the accident which prevented the metal arms from controlling him. This is better overall execution as everything leads into each-other as a cohesive package in believable manner that you cannot help sympathize considering that the damage to Otto here, both mentally and physically is permanent. Though it's clear that the motions of the character, the way he moves around, depicted is undoubtedly similar to Spider-Man 2's interpretation off the character that it's obviously a huge source of inspiration in making of this story; there's simply no denying that this pretty much surpasses it in nearly every single way in terms of the writing of the character. The story of this game truly explored the source of Otto Octavias's inner ambitions like no other Spider-Man medium. Otto's obsessive workaholic nature of wanting to change the world with technology along with the consequently touchy and jealous bitterness the disgruntled scientist harbored for Norman Osborne's corruption as well as accomplishments; whilst in turn ignoring his own flaws and finally his creeping disabilities that eventually turned him from a good noble scientist who only wanted the betterment of mankind to a sadistic monster bent on revenge purely out of egotistical pride.

Can we just take a second to appreciate the way the typical “with great power must also come great responsibility” idea becomes twisted and far darker after it’s been shaken around by Otto? He takes a message meant to inspire acts of heroism, selflessness, and sticking up for the little guy and, thanks to deep-seated bitterness and a crumbling psyche, turns it into an insane ramble on those “beneath” men like he and Peter. Tries to use it as his own justification. That’s one cool thing about everything Spider-Man: this idea of responsibility comes up and is played with again and again. And Peter, a hero to his core, always sees through the dark spins that other may put on it, sees through to its true message, and does the right thing... Even when it hurts like hell.

To me Norman Osborn was the real villain of the entire game. Both Li and Ock may be antagonists but they were victims of Oscorp, one literally and the other taken advantage of. Everything Norman did was out of self gain and selfish ambition. Even when facing Doc Octavius with his life, instead of admitting all his wrongs, he decided to further demoralize Octavius to the end. A real villain wouldn't show any remorse, and Osborn did just that. But even after all Octavius had done, he poured his heart out to Peter, although it wasn't 100%, it still showed his humanity towards the only person he had left.

The story of this Otto Octavius is very tragic and I love how they made him the mentor to Peter. It makes it more tragic when He betrays Peter and the work that they have thrived towards has been used to inact his revenge upon Osborn. Can we also appreciate how they developed upon the backstory of this Otto and Osborn more by having them be old Business partners who studied in college together and established their own business together for Osborn to steal of the credit for their achievements. They made this version of Norman Osborn more sly and treacherous, making him more and more unlikeable. It makes Ottos quest for revenge become more saddening as his quest for revenge consumes his heart. I also liked the addition of giving Octavius a Disease 🦠 that attacks the muscles 💪🏻 in his body while leaving his brain 🧠 intact. I was left heartbroken at the end as Otto screams out for Peter not to take away his arms because it would trap him inside his own decaying body. It adds more heartbreak to Peter because he viewed Otto as a father to him and they really had a strong relationship with each other. This has to be my favourite Doctor Octopus 🐙 adaptation who’s design is only taken by the Sam Raimi’s design of Doctor Ock but apart from that I love this version so much. Xx

I actually think this game was more of an exciting, well-written, cinematic experience than half of the MCU films. Although I didn't expect anything less from Insomniac. I like how it's an original interpretation that pays homage to the films, series and comic books but it's not adhering to them, it does it's own new thing with the characters, kinda like what Spectacular Spider-Man did. I also really love the soundtrack, Otto's theme when the arms come out, and during the prison riot and the final battle, really captivating. I also like how different Otto looks before and after donning the arms, suit and goggles, he really transformed 100% to Doc Ock, things like the snarl from the comics and Alfred Molina's stare as the arms move about in a sinister way, genius. I also really like, sorry know I'm saying that a lot, how this version of Otto wasn't already using a fully-formed set of arms to handle dangerous radiation or anything, he wasn't going about like he just whipped them up in a shed overnight and looking over the fact that the arms alone would've made him a mint, but this Doc Ock actually works hard and struggles to create his signature arms, not only for scientific discovery; but also for his own wellbeing and the wellbeing of others. And I love the little details like how he moves about in a more upright, faster, more confident way when he's finished the arms, despite the limp, which isn't even on his mind. And during the riot; when he grabs Peter's hand, the other arms are flat on the ground while the arm on Peter's hand is grasping it like a handshake. Very realistic too, the arms aren't controlling him; the brain implant is merely affecting him in a very mild, barely Phineas Gage sort of way, so it changes his personality through brain damage, which makes him act out on violent thoughts and desires that he was already supressing. I sort of know from experience that brain damage can do that, because my dad suffered a lot of brain damage, after a motorcycle accident and he seemed to recover really well, but it really impacted his personality most of all, he went from a nice, easy-going guy to a violent alcoholic, he was very abusive, like a completely different person, and it took me a while to understand that this was because little shards of concrete in his brain actually changed the way he thinks. Really just my favourite incarnation of Otto, I never thought anyone could top Alfred Molina or Spectacular Spider-Man but here we are. I also really dig Electro's new suit.

I wholeheartedly agree. In other adaptations of Spider-Man, it is usually the origin story of how Peter became Spider-Man. If not, then he is usually fairly young and new to the spidey life. In this game, I like how Peter already knows so much about his powers and can control them very well. Peter also graduated college, he's got a job, and he is very experienced. This wasn't an origin story for Spider-Man, but it was one for Doc Ock, and I find that SUUUPER refreshing, and genius! This entire game was well thought out all the way through. DAMN.
