Spice Girls - a case study in Bubblegum Feminism | GRWM

Baby Spice, Sporty Spice, Scary Spice, Posh Spice and Ginger Spice, all the ingredients you need for an amazing pop group that people still think of fondly over 20 years later. The Spice girls crashed onto the scene and inspired many kids to want to emulate them, imitate them and say what they want, what they really, really want. Though they came up against huge waves of criticism constantly, from basically everyone. I wanted to look at this bubblegum feminism that they sold and take a critical eye not only to it but the environment at the time, let's dive in. Yes, I did paint my nails bubblegum pink just for this.

    ❤ You can tell that they aren't trying to dress for the male gaze. It's like Harley Quinn in the Birds of Prey movie- she was showing as much skin as in the first Suicide Squad movie, but men complained that she wasn't sexy because it wasn't done for the male gaze. The fact that they always stuck up for each other was very important for feminism. The media still tries to pit women against each other today.

  • @BryonyClaire

    Exactly, right? But they got treated as if they were because of the idea of showing any skin meaning "you're asking for it" (which is a disgusting mindset but so very prevalent, including today). They really were so tight knit, whilst they made jokes towards each other they would be ferocious if people tried to slander the others

    They are really fun and charming in so many ways but it's their friendship that shines the most for me. I don't get the sense that other manufacturers bands are nearly close to each other which is such a shame. I really like how they stood up for eachother.

    Your videos are always so well researched. I honestly loved the Spice Girls its honestly sad and disappointing that every time a girl group tries their best society will always brings them down. It especially hurts when it comes from other women. My favorite was Posh. I really hope that your channel gets more recognition, you deserve it.

    It was terrible in that decade with the celeb rags (I would much rather read the Observer colour supplements or music magazines then), stars like Lindsay Lohan were falling apart, being expected to spend a lot of money on fast fashion (it's cheaper in the long run and time saving to buy more expensive but longer lasting clothing) and the pressure to be a size 0. I have never recovered from it as it ruined most of my friendships as I refused to go along with it.

    I think the Spice Girls did serve an interesting role in the popularization of feminist concepts. Girl/female empowerment is still a fairly new concept in broader culture. So them presenting a low key version of it, and focusing on mutual love & support, was actually a rather strategic approach, because change is gradual. It does not happen overnight. I think, the massive merch portion aside, they served a helpful role in that cultural movement.

    Same, I think they actually helped heaps and it was really sad seeing other women use their own internalized misogyny against them. I think they were a net positive, too, especially looking back at things like I have for the 00's and then at the 90's for this, they had a lot stacked up in their opposition.

    The Spice Girls influenced me so much while I was growing up and I didn't even realize it, but thinking back, they inspired me to write lyrics and poems and even my stand-up comedy that I perform at open mic nights. While I'm also influenced by other musicians, bands and actors, I write empowering stand-up comedy about abstinence and saying no to sex. Victoria, Emma and Geri were my faves!

    Got here late, but oh my gosh, I love the girls’ love for one another! 💞 I loved them back in the day, I was a young teen when they got big. It’s enlightening to see why their original dynamic was so beloved: their fun individuality, and most importantly, their dedication to their friendship. Sure they dressed in some quirky ways, but I don’t agree in the gatekeeping of feminism by the riot grrrls. I love being soft & feminine now, but back then (and until the last 5 years or so), I recall feeling that pressure to always dress for the male gaze, yet wanting to also be respected by men. Looking back at their outfits though, I agree with other commenters, they were showing skin but not specifically for the male gaze, which most other pop stars have and continue to do. To the extreme. Thank you for your work on this!! 💗

    Yet another great video! 😃 I didn't have one clear favourite, but I'd say 🖤 and 💛 were both close. I actually didn't listen all that much to them, cause I was very much into rap and r'n'b at the time, but I did like many of their songs, and the whole girl power thing had a big impact on me. You can say a lot about the lacks of their feminism, but for feminism to have any impact at all, people need to hear about it, and academic feminism isn't a great starting point for little girls. A lot of it is hard to read even for adults with academic experience. And I think the Spice Girls made a difference for a whole generation of young girls, in that it was ok to like girly stuff, it was good to focus on friendship, rather than fighting over boys, and that you could be yourself. That might sound like not much, but in the 90's it was. Sadly. And in the 2000s it was even more. I didn't really pick up on all the shit they were subjected to at the time, but looking back at it, it's so bad. My god we have come a long way in the last 20 years, but still there's a long way to go. As for girl groups now, all I can think of is k-pop groups, but I don't know enough about them and their songs to know if they're anything similar. But my kids listen to Mamamoo, amongst others, and they seem kind of girl power to me. But again, I don't know all that much about them. If you do, it would be cool if you made a video about them (or k-pop in general, and feminism/racism)!

  • @BryonyClaire

    @BryonyClaire

    Both great choices! Things sadly need to be palatable for people to be interested in positive change, and they did that and still came up against hate. I truly think they had a net positive, and yes we've definitely come a long way over this time, some of the interviews they were in, my god. I don't know much about kpop groups but I highly recommend Cheyenne Lin's videos on kpop because she's covered that extensively well. Whilst I'm interested in discussing the issues with racism and feminism, Princess Weekes, Khadija Mbowe, Tee Noir and For Harriett do such a fantastic job in that space and as a white woman, I don't really feel it's my place to speak on an issue I don't personally deal with, but I will platform the heck out of them!

    I don't think the Spice Girls were "Feminists", since Feminists are political and fight for women's rights. Spice Girls never fought for Abortion rights or Equal pay for women or anything political like that, they just promoted the idea that Women could be strong and achieve anything they want. Basically they promoted an aspect of Feminism without the polarizing political parts that weren't appealing to a mainstream audience.

  • @BryonyClaire

    @BryonyClaire

    So they were empowering women to achieve what they wanted? I still count that as a feminist notion and getting that mainstream in the same way you spoke about. It may be "less extreme" but they were actually breaking boundaries in pop music, which I'd argue is still a net positive

  • @Lil_Angry_Bitch

    @Lil_Angry_Bitch

    @@BryonyClaire What I'm saying is that Spice Girls weren't True Hardcore Feminists. They promoted a lighter aspect of Feminism that was marketable but they didn't go deep into feminist ideologies, especially political aspects that could turn people off. That's like labeling someone a "Vegan" who only eats a little bit of Vegan food, but eats non-vegan the rest of the time. Just because someone eats Vegan food doesn't necessarily mean they are a Vegan. Back in the 90s, Many feminists despised the Spice Girls, accusing them as being a manufactured product created by men to cash in on feminist ideas, while relying on sex and using their bodies to sell, ideas that feminist at the time really didn't like.
