Excellent! As a parent of a Freshman at Howard University and an alum of a HBCU, I agree. I feel these universities missed an opportunity to model excellence. The below-average or basic preparation is disappointing. As thought leaders, I expected that they would be better prepared.

i’m always thinking of howard students with these issues too. it’s like our communities go through them concurrently.

This also happened at NCAT. The school offer $2000 to 500 students to move off campus, 2 weeks before school started. This has been a problem since my daughter started there. But, one thing I can say, you can definitely see where the money is going. new student center and engineer building. Just started a new development of student housing, So, it’s definitely nice to see where your money is going, especially when you pay out of state tuition. I wish you wonderful senior year, keep smiling

i love that you can at least see changes being made because housing issues are widespread across HBCUs, largely due to lack of funding (or the mismanagement of funds). the AUC would like a little more transparency where it really matters. thank you for your well wishes! ❤️

I graduated from Howard in 2020 and I totally understand where you’re coming from. Our HBCUs have to do better!

Thank you so much for making this video! I applied for Spelman this year and you definitely gave me a different perspective. I think most colleges do portray this false message that their all about their students but at the end of the day we are just dollar signs to them. Im proud of you for speaking about these issues.

thank you for watching! i’m in no way trying to disuade you from attending, but one thing i’ve always wished (and what motivated me to make the videos i do) was that i had a more honest perspective on the spelmanite experience. there’s so much that my siblings and i had to find out, and i don’t want that to be the case for the future students 💙

something to remember through your matriculation is that spelman’s greatest critics are hardly of the outside world. because we know all what spelman can be, it’s spelmanites and spelman women who hold our institution the most accountable. enjoy your time and stay aware! 💙

Damn thats messed up, they are accepting money for housing knowing they can't provide it. I Went to GStateU and did not know AUC was having these problems. AUC needs to start partnering with developers to build more housing. KSU, G State/Souther U built more housing as the enrollments increased. AUC head honchoes need to get it together.

Yeah... It saddens me that this is such an issue. I went to PWI undergrad and HBCU for grad school. The HBCU was always late with money and literally everyone had the worst attitude when you asked any questions. They never had answers. This was awful after being so proud of black excellence. I would not send my children to HBCUs if I'm being honest. Yes, it was that bad.

i’m sorry you had that experience because it’s frustrating. because i love the mission and purpose of HBCUs, i will always expose my future children to the culture with the hopes that they’ll experience much of the good that dominates going to an HBCU.

you make hbcus look bad when you complain about stuff that every university, especially prestigious ones, deal with. money spent on the schools and not the students? shocker ! almost like a university is also a business that has to keep itself afloat as much as it is an educational institute. georgetown, norte dame, etc, all have this similar problems but because their students have class you wouldn’t know. black people need to do better, talk down on harvard or something, not our hbcus

  • @krystianstevens

i’m sorry you feel the need to protect the image of schools that are actively harming Black students. i’m sorry you feel that since white institutions have the same issues, HBCU students should ignore the issues we’re currently facing…as HBCU students. i don’t go to harvard, so why would i speak on a school that i don’t attend? just because schools are a business, it doesn’t mean that large numbers of students should be left without reliable housing or accommodations. howard students are living in mold infested dorms, but if georgetown had the same problem, would you also suggest that they turn their attention towards another school they don’t attend? i don’t have class because i’m not willing to stay silent about a school with a lot more money than i do neglecting my classmates? think what you want, but it’s high time that these schools are held accountable, especially as they’re supposed to be our safe spaces.

I once lived in a dorm at an Ivy League school and guess what? When structural issues arose that made habitation in said dorms unlivable, I was moved into other spaces, sometimes more luxurious than the dorms I was in, while the issue was addressed within 48hrs. Her addressing systemic neglect within HBCU’s doesn’t make them “look bad,” but THEIR neglect certainly does. “Black people need to do better”…? At what exactly? According to your logic (or lack thereof) it would be do better at silencing themselves and acting as though everything is “perfect,” for, I’m sure, the White gaze. A classy person, by definition, has and/or reflects high standards. It is clear, by creating this video that she is not only classy, but is not accepting of less. While you on the other hand…eh. 🥴

Thank you Krystian for enlightening everyone about the lack there of across the AUC. You are NOT making these HBCU's look bad, they are making themselves look bad for not being attentive to the needs of students. I really appreciate you for speaking your truth. As you said, Spelman and the entire AUC needs to do better! All HBCU's need to do better!

@@NiaHope I'm sorry but I did see a online video from a former Harvard student whom expressed that she experienced rats and mold in the old dorms. She didnt mention a resolve, But she was an Indian woman talking about a historically white instiution.
