Spektrum Quick Hit Tech Tip - How to setup Thrust Reversing on Avian ESCs and BNF Aircraft

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this video, Tom explains to our fellow RC Enthusiasts how to use the Avian Prog menu to enable Motor / Thrust Reversing. This feature is preloaded into all current Avian ESCs and is even included with some E-Flite Bind and Fly models. If you are having trouble following along with the manual, this is the video for you!
Required devices to perform Thrust Reverse
- A Spektrum Smart capable receiver - All current receiver models support Smart telemetry. A simple indicators that this function is available is the Spektrum Smart Logo is on the label.
- A Spektrum Smart capable Spektrum computer transmitter - If it is a G2/G3 DX with a screen, or a NX or iX, you have this functionality.
- A Spektrum Smart Avian esc - Either included with a BNF or PNP model or purchased open stock.
---------- Important Notes ------------
This is an advanced function, and likewise, should only be used by experienced pilots and Spektrum users. This video tutorial will help with the setup and hopefully answer any questions you might have, but it is not a replacement for inexperience. It is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT that you understand which channel you select for Thrust Rev and to make sure that the switch and or channel you use is NOT used by another function. Such as control surfaces, flaps, retracts, SAFE or AS3X modes, gain adjustment channel, etc.
TEST THRUST REVERSE ON THE GROUND AND WITHOUT A PROPELLER FIRST! To confirm that thrust reverse is not going to cause any surprises while in flight, check thrust reversing while observing the models other functions, modes and controls.
These same steps are synonymous with Spektrum DX Gen 2 and Gen 3 transmitters and NX transmitters. The menu structure may be slightly different but the options and steps are the same.
For the best user experience, make sure that your Transmitter, ESC and Receiver is up to date. If you are experiencing any problems during setup, this is the first thing to check. Look for our links below to learn how to update each of these devices.

Tom great explanation, what I can’t understand is that with every time starting up my model plane (using an IX20 transmitter with receiver AR8360T with AVIAN ESC 60A and engine E-flite EFLM7450 - BL50) the prop starts CW (clock wise) and not CCW (counter clock wise) only if I start my system with full throttle, I can manage that I get her to run CCW. Even using a brand new receivers AR8360T??????? Could it be that I somehow have damaged my AVIAN

Just purchased the Eflite Beech 18, and downloaded the model setup for the IX 20. (The Beech 18 model setup was not in the add new aircraft BNF menu selection. I had to down load it from the spektrum site to my radio via the SD card). My radio is up to date with the latest firmware update. BUT the Avain Prog selection is not available on my radio All control surfaces are working including flaps and gear. The manual refers to the ESC programmer only. Any help would greatly be appreciated.

Hi, I had reverse setup on the Ultimate 3D BNF the same way you are demonstrating. But I changed the motor due to damage and attempted to calibrate the ESC, turns out I inadvertently changed the aircraft type to heli. I finally figured out how to get the esc back to fixed wing using the throttle stick. Now reverse doesnt work and I cant get the avian prog page on my NX8 anymore. Please let me know if threre is a way to reset eveything back to the BNF settings or how to get that avian prog page back on the transmitter. Tried everything, telemtry auto program, as3x, 100% rates even turned off safe completely still cant get that screen that allows selection of reverse. thanks

How would you setup a throttle limit in reverse? Maybe something like 50% throttle in reverse. I think this could easily be done with throttle curves based on the reverse switch position but I use my throttle curves for other things. Any other way? Maybe with a mix but not sure how I would do that. On my DX8G2, I notice in the throttle curve menu that a combination of two switches can be used to select curves but one doesn't seem to be active. Is that not available with ACRO models?

I bought a Turbo Timber Evo from a fellow flyer. I had no Spektrum equipment, and I wanted to increase the capabilities of the plane. The plane had reverse thrust with the original Spektrum radio. I removed the Spektrum receiver and replaced it with a CUBE Flight Controller and a different receiver. I am still using the original "Smart ESC" I cut the 3rd wire off the battery connector and replaced it with a (more standard) XT-90. The plane flies great but has no Reverse Thrust capability. I'm an EE. I understand PWM, etc. My question is - What signals do I have to feed to the "Smart ESC" in order to get the motor to reverse?

Great explanation as far as it goes, however I have watched every video I can find on this programming, and no one addresses the issue of what channel to use if you are using Channel7/Aux 2 for your AS3X/Safe modes. On all of my E-flite models, I activate SAFE as a back-up and put it on Switch G for easy access during flight and commonality of all my models. Since I assign Aux 2 to Switch G, it is channel 7, so I cannot use that for the reversing. Am I correct that I could use channel 5 ( in the reversing menu ) and switch A as my reversing operation??, since the Turbo Timber Evolution does not need the gear switch. Thanks for any clarification you can provide.

@@SpektrumRCvideos I dont understand why you guys made it so un-intuitive. Why not just set up a GUI 'enable thrust reverse' and then step by step it. Hopefully in a future TX update.

@@miksterr I dont understand why they would make the gimbals part of the process at all when they have both a touch screen and a scroll wheel...watching him go through that process set the rc world back 20 years...

To be clear, this is a feature that can be used to brake a propeller aircraft after touch down? Udate: This popped up from HH: kzread.info/dash/bejne/q2aLma6On6fZe84.html

----------- Important Notes ------------- This is an advanced function, and likewise, should only be used by experienced pilots and Spektrum users.

Writing this comment before watching the video. The reversing feature is on aux2, so if i put aux2 on a empty switch i should be good? Ok watching video.
