I agree the full boot up time is long and I'm a year late on this video and don't remember when the update was applied to make sleep mode more efficient, but do you turn off your phone then turn it back on every time you want to use it? No it goes into "sleep" mode with the screen off then you tap it to wake it back up when you want to use it. Just like my phone I only turn it off completely if I know i'm not going to use it for a week or so. Then if i'm going to have it on for awhile like last night when I was building a new plane and getting the control links set up i just turned everything off but the RF. Switching models takes longer than I would like, but isn't much worse than turning a normal one off then back on again to get into model select, then restarting it again. But not a big deal at the field as I unplug the plane I just flew, swap the model to the next one then its well past finishing loading it by the time i'm ready to plug the battery into the next one.

Thanks for taking the time to post this review, your effort is greatly appreciated. However, I do think your statement regarding the boot time could be misleading. Early in your review, you stated that it took the complete boot time for the radio to be functional. This actually not the case. The Android component of this radio is really just an interface to the backend radio, which seems to be a 12 ch version of the DX9. This is completely independent of the Android front end. As stated in the Spektrum instructional video that was referred to by Reginald Mc Nab, kzread.info/dash/bejne/pHWjybZ-eKyrqLw.html, when the radio is first powered on, the radio is functional from a control perspective nearly immediately using the settings of the last model that was used. When changes are made to the model programming, the Andriod AirWare application communicates with the radio (probably via an internal serial or I2C interface). This is can be seen somewhat when changing the model as AirWare first reads the current settings to write them to the model file, then writes the settings of the newly selected model back to the radio. As for the issues you have had with the AR636A RXs, I use several of them and have not experienced any such issues. If the backend is indeed essentially the DX9, then the actual radio component is a pretty battle-tested platform. Also, the sleep function of the radio works very well and cycles in a couple of seconds. I typically use this throughout a flying day and only completely power down the transmitter at the end of the day. The battery will maintain its charge in sleep mode for a week or more (assuming you have updated the firmware as there was an issue with this in earlier versions). Again, thank you for your review. The Android interface (AirWare application) is not perfect and still needs tweaking and polishing, but having the completely separate control and RF radio internally gives me enough peace of mind that I no issues using this TX with even my most valued aircraft.

Nick Johnson I do agree with a lot you have to see however; there’s a lot of times (especially this time of year in Northeastern Ohio) that the weather will prevent me from flying the last model I flew. Just today actually I had to switch from my Rascal 80, to my Kougar (sleeker airframe for higher winds.) And in the process on my Futaba 18SZ it took me, at the most 10 seconds to completely power on, and switch the model. If I were to power the IX12 down after every use (like you can do with literally every other radio in the platform.) It would take me over two minutes to do that. My local hobby shop had similar issues with the AR636A rx’s. However; they narrowed it down to a firmware issue on the firmware I had used back in late July. So it may not be a current issue but it shows lack of attention on Spektrum’s behalf. To be honest with you. If I would’ve just bought a DX9 instead of this radio. I wouldn’t be flying with a Futaba right now. The DX9 is a beast. Spectrum still has protocol issues with their receivers picking up ignition noise with gas engines causing brownouts. Hopefully it can be fixed at some point. Since I have switched to Futaba, I have had literally NO issues with my big gas engines or my smaller electric or glow planes. I have never had any issues of losing signal. As I shouldn’t for spending $1400 on a radio lol. For $600 and flying strictly BNF’s this IX12 would be awesome.

I have this radio I like it. Radio is fully functional when you power up and can fly immediately no problem, it just takes android a couple minutes to come online.

Got a quick question buddy do you have to use a computer for models set up with the ix12

Great question man! I would be happy to answer. I did a lot with the radio in the few months I had it. The android interface was nice in the fact that even a small quadcopter where you would need beta flight to tune it; instead of toting a laptop around with you. You could do it straight from the TX. The only time I used a computer was to back up my models when switching from my DX8 to my IX12 everything else can be easily accomplished by using just the radio. So no, you do not need a computer.

A good review that made me look for something else. I always get a bad sense of Horizon Hobby's way to grow to get bigger than everyone else. They have many nice rc-planes that I would love to buy if it was not because the manufacturer was bought by Horizon and suddenly can not be sold by any store. They are certainly growing in North America, but in Europe they probably get it hard, mostly because of the bad red hair joke, people dont like to buy things from a bad guy....and even less from one who seems born on another planet .... and crazy . By the way, IF you want this IX12 I saw that it has begun to sell in terrible colors ...yes! Really ugly!.... If anyone want one, then there are probably many cheap to buy, very soon. The colors on all of them are so terrible that I see them as very hard to sell. So wait .... Prices will drop, ....but ugly as hell. For me it become a Futaba T16SZ and I'm pleased...but it feels as always....very old and big to hold, and a bit clumsy. I wishing someone at Futaba begin thinking about how we are created to reach everything easily. I dont think It fit them with small hands, but not worse than others. Here in Sweden, the price is the same on both.

Doesn't really seem like this is a true "review". To me listening to this review seems like you already made up your mind about what you thought about the radio, seemed super nit picky and less of an informative review that was constructive giving potential consumers a thorough review that could give us a good insight as to the actual usability of the radio. My thought is that if you don't like the radio, just say that, rather than knocking the radio and accusing the radio for causing your plane to "brown" out or lock out, when it could very well have been your error that cause the issue with your flying mishap. Ive flown Spektrum for over 10 years and every radio that I've flown from Spektrum has been great. Definitely not a fair and impartial review

BestLife Entrepreneur would you rather someone not do a review after the mind was made up and you intern buy a terrible product or miss out on a product that’s worth while? That may be in the top 3 idiotic things anyone has ever said on my channel.

You can't even compare the ix12 to other older technology radios. This is a COMPUTER that also serves as a rc radio. You first need to understand that.

Okay, it’s a radio that runs off an android OS. I would feel equally appalled if this were a washer machine. At the time I reviewed it, it was a subpar product. Maybe it’s better now. But my DX9 will always be the perfect radio for me.

That is incorrect, it says in the book to wait until the OS has booted BEFORE flight. If you missed that, what else could you have missed in the book? Maybe they have changed it since then (over a year ago) it seems like there are a lot of people who are unhappy about an honest review because they got duped into buying a sub-par product. Not my fault. After this abortion of a radio I switched to Futaba, haven’t looked back since.
