Absolutely the best "how to videos" on the 636 programming. I'm 70 and these videos made me seem like a 20 year old techie to the guys at my club. Friend has a used Eflite 1.2m Spitfire that he was fighting with. I listened as he explained problem to another flier. Then asked if I could take a look. I did the PROPER preflight check and found the gyro corrections were wrong. I downloaded a clean version and the version in his receiver. Comparison showed I was correct! Somehow the reversing of the elevator and ailerons had been changed. We reset his aircraft as a NEW model and reloaded the receiver.....Flies Great....Smiles everywhere!!

Hi Dave so you post to my question on HH FB forum got removed. It was such huge help yet not sure why the removal ??? This is what I wrote back to you. So I wanted to say thank you but now no longer can read your well documented explanation with my v900 safe launch issue. This was my response. Igor Julian Kos badge icon Author Dave wow, thank you for this beyond comprehensive explanation and your kind help. I have three planes that I use Safe on and no problems right out of the box. The Timber X I barely use it on, the F16 during hand launch is a life saver and the v900. So reading your input (twice 😉 )as well as watching your video I do understand it . Especially with the throttle to elev. mix. The v900 is the first plane that Safe is giving me problems during launch, basically I launch at 3/4 throttle on a 4s or sometimes little less like 1/2 Throttle and it is then when the plane starts to dip down in safe and I quickly reach with me left hand to pull full back on the up elevator and it is still not enough to get level flight nor a climb and she is heading for the ground ever so slowly. So my instinct at that stage is not to give more power as suggested by others and I actually know that would pull it out of the dive as that is sort of scary to do in my case so I flip safe off (gear switch) quick and she pulls up fine and then I'm in full control. No issues with rolls, only pitch. When I'm up in the air and hit safe at a safe alt. and I test safe on it actually does what it is designed for and does not nose down and keeps leveled flight and limits my bank angles as it should. I spoke to HH and explained this and they sent me a new AR636 thinking the gyro may be bad but the new unit does the same. They even programed it for the V900 and now It is placed exactly as the BNF had the previous one installed and matches the Model Builder mount instructions as well. Same thing happens again so my solution was hoping for more up elevator travel while in safe so I can keep level flight and even climb in safe. So watching your video I still was not sure what to adjust . I saw the Thr to elev. mix and left that alone as I know that as thr increases pitch will go up and down elevator is needed but during flight when I went to full thr I did not get any crazy nose pitch up problems so I left that be. The only thing I though of that would help is to up the Flight mode 1 Elev pitch angle from 45 to 60 as I assume the higher number the more up elevator. Now I did notice more up travel on the elevator on the ground when safe is on but now I question that move because it could also mean that this change could perhaps make the v900 go into a climb now during safe, which actually I could handle better as down elevator has super throw. So to be honest I do not know if I helped the situation or not. As you said it is not complicated but the first time making adjustments to safe without an actual flight I do not know what this launch will be like. The F16 I can throw that like anyway I like and that plane levels perfect at any throttle or angle thrown so that spoiled me. I made it into a belly lander why the hand launch. Almost always the f16 gets launched at full thr but never ever dips, just levels. So now the only change I made to the v900 is the 45 to 60 pitch axes increase and honestly I do not know what to expect. So sorry. These are my unchanged thr to elev mix settings below. Again I so appreciate your input on this. Huge help but coming from Nitro days and Futaba FM 4ch in 1984 this is a little change up 😉

Thank you for your instructive video on the AR636 Receiver and programming it! I have 3 of these receivers and one AR9030T (not in a model yet). I assume the A,B versions like AR636A are just later versions of the same thing? Our systems are working fine, but was wondering how, or if, some of the original programming could be programmed slightly different. Glad to be learning about this!

Thomas Jent thanks for watching! The AR636A and B models are OEM receivers that were originally installed in a Horizon Bind And Fly model. There are some minor hardware difference and some of the very early AR636A models may be locked. If you are unable to register the receiver it is locked and there’s not much you can do with it. If you can register it, you should be able to follow along with this entire series without any complications. Let me know if you have any other questions!

Great series! I am having problems with my AR636 arming after I've completed a successful binding and following your instructions/video. The only difference I can find is that now there is a newer version (1.6.1) of the SAFE Model Builder that I am using and the only difference I ran into with it vs your instructions/video is that when I am on the 'Switch Setup' tab, the 'Flight Mode with SAFE on' selection is grayed out and does not allow me to set it to 3 as you do in your video. Other than that difference everything else is the same and followed. After the AR636 did not arm up the first time I reset it and repeated the procedure by following your videos 1 - 13 again and had the same results. After two failures I did load the SRM file that was created and saved prior to making the changes with the SAFE Model Builder and it did allow the AR636 to complete arm up so it is something I'm doing in the SAFE Model Builder program that the AR636 doesn't like and preventing it from completely arming up. Any ideas? Thanks

I have a problem with the Spektrum Receiver AR636. If I move it back and forth with 2 fingers, the ailerons move. If I fasten it with a Velcro fastener and for sure in the right direction, then the spectrum receiver will no longer work. Should I not lash it down with Velcro, but fix it with double-sided adhesive tape. Thanks for your information.

The telemetry is fairly limited on the AR636. It will send back Rx Voltage, signal loss, etc. and will also pass AS3X gain data. It’s not a full range telemetry Rx. The new AR637T sends back a ton of data!

Dave, there is a large community at www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?2135213-Eflite-SAFE-RX-in-another-plane who can help answer questions and provide guidance for your viewers, Flightengr is certainly a standout among them. The thread was originally created by Jim Suenaga who transplanted the original EFLR310013 SAFE receiver from the E-Flite Apprentice into a E-flite P-51D "Dallas Doll". The thread has come along way since then and has most likely influenced the SAFE product as a whole. Glad to see someone has created a video series, but keep in mind that we learn new things all the time about the technology and the forum will have the latest information. Cheers!

I’ve honestly never had very good luck using the Audio cable and now use the Bluetooth module when I am connective via Mobile. I know the audio cable had some odd requirements, like the volume had to be turned up all the way for it to work right. Maybe try that. If the app is crashing, you may want to consider trying the Bluetooth module.

@@TheRCAirMarshall In the overview of the AR636B Product Detail (enter SPMAR636B on Horizon search panel) Spektrum states that "due to the changing nature of Android FSK modulation its no longer compatible with the 3081 cable" and so to use the SPMBT1000 Blue tooth cable. However the manual has not been amended to this fact. Spektrum should be absolutely ashamed of their standard of documentation as if information is not omitted - then its fraught with errors.

Got it! So if all you want is a flight mode switch, (you don’t have enough channels for a separate panic button) you would set up the AR636 to use Aux 1 as the flight mode switch and in your transmitter set up whichever switch you want to be the flight mode selection switch to the Aux 1 Channel in channel assign.

@@treadhead1945 gotcha... That is a limitation of the Spektrum Programmer Software. Even if you do not intend to use SAFE, you can work around this by using the SAFE model builder application. In the Spektrum Programmer, you'll need to export the model you're working with by going to Models, then on the line of the model you're working with click the More button on the right side of the model line item, and click export. Save the file somewhere you can remember it. Next, open the exported model file in the SAFE model builder, and under the Switch Setup tab, you should be able to select "Use Standard AR636 Flight Mode Switch" and select Aux 1 as the flight mode switch in the selection box on the right. Save the newly modified model file and import it into the Spektrum Programmer. When you look at Flight Mode switch, it will show nothing at all selected. This is okay. In the actual XML code of the SRM file, if you care to look, on line 1501 of the code you will see "flightModeSwitch": 5, - which tells us that the flight mode switch is Aux 1. In the XML code 4 = Gear, 5 = Aux 1, 6 = Aux 2, 7 = Aux 3, etc... You should be good to go after that!

Gotcha, I’ve never reprogrammed a DXe from an RTF model, but my understanding is they aren’t as capable. Not sure what the differences are. They will definitely bind to an AR636, but getting it programmed with the switches where you want them could potentially be a challenge. If it will program like any other DXe it should be fairly simple using the Bluetooth module or the USB Programming cable to get the DXe set up the way you need it.

I have thought about buying an OE spare part in the rx items in the Cub S+ and binding to that which I'm guessing should logically work as it can't see what model it is in provided the orientation and mount is identical to the Cub S+. A TX in Australia on a DX6I or similar is over $300, but I may have to end up purchasing a stand-alone Tx like that to be able to put safe/as3x in other models it seems. I'm a Mechanic by first trade, and now a builder, this Electric mumbo jumbo does my head in frankly lol.
