Spektrum AR636 AS3X & SAFE Receiver How-To

Here's most of how I set up Spektrum AR636 AS3X/SAFE receivers. This is a rough draft. I plan on doing a better version later. I didn't cover registering your receiver and updating the firmware in this one. I have much more info to share, but it'll take some time to put it all together.

    Thank you, thank you, thank you! Are the first and only person (out of a dozen people I have asked) who is able to describe, explain and demonstrate how Safe & AS3X work and how to set it for use in a model. Bravo Zulu! Might be a stupid question; will the settings you demonstrated for safe & AS3X work for a helicopter?

  • @txkflier

    I've never reprogrammed an AR636 for a helicopter. There are two versions of firmware for the AR636 for airplanes - one for AS3X with heading hold (V1.x) and one for AS3X with SAFE (V2.x). They list 5 or 6 other firmware versions for various helicopters, but I've never loaded one of them into one of my AR636's. On the Google shared drive, Spektrum has config files you can download for airplanes, but I didn't see any for helicopters. I have a Blade 230 S I might could read the configuration from. I think I also have an AR636 that came out of a helicopter that a friend bought at a pawn shop. It's missing one or both antennas, so it wouldn't hurt to play with it.

    Hey good job with this. I have a question for you though, does the priority setting have anything to do with the amount of angle limits with the 636 receiver? In other words, if you use 140 priority on roll will that give you more of a bank angle than if you use 165 on roll priority? Trying to figure out what settings to use for a scratch built MQ9 Reaper. Any feedback will help thanks.

  • @txkflier

    @txkflier

    Жыл бұрын

    Thanks. The AS3X priority setting only determines the amount of travel it takes to lower the AS3X gain to zero. The AS3X gain will be whatever we set it to only when the stick is centered. The gyro gain should decrease as we move the stick away from center and will hopefully be zero at full stick deflection (or before). If the priority is set to 100% and the channel output is ±100% at full stick deflection, the gain will decrease to zero just as the stick hits the stop. However, if you're in low rate, the gain won't quite decrease to zero. To ensure that the gain goes to zero at full stick deflection in low rates, we set the priority to 150%. This value allows us to set our low rates as low as 50% and the gain will still decrease to zero at or before full stick deflection. If you were to set it to 160%, you could use 40% in low rates. Since I never go below 50%, in low rates I set all of my priorities to 150%. However! In SAFE mode, I set the priority to 100% because I always use 100% travel in SAFE mode. If you use low rates (or anything less than 100% travel) in SAFE mode, your plane won't reach the full bank/pitch limits. So.. 1. In AS3X mode, set the priority to 150 or 160 percent. You won't be able to tell the difference. 2. You can use low rates in AS3X mode, but not in SAFE mode. 3. In SAFE mode, always set the priorities to 100% and set the dual rates and servo travel to 100%. 4. For the first flights, set the AS3X gains to 30, 40, and 50 percent for roll, pitch, and yaw respectively. 5. Increase all 3 gains by 10% over the new few flights until you start seeing signs of oscillation. 6. Decrease all 3 gains by 5% until the oscillation goes away. 7. You should generally have 10% more pitch gain than roll gain and 10% more yaw gain than pitch gain.

    Excellent tutorial, it might be just what I'm looking for. I want to set up an AR636(a) in my original timber 1.5m, to fly like my sport cub s. I like the 3 position modes of just regular safe (not safe select) with beginner, intermediate, and advanced, with the panic button. It just flies really nice. With my timber, I struggle when turning off safe select. I'm a new pilot to airplanes. I'm not even sure if I should do this, or just man up and learn to fly the timber with safe select (and keep repairing it) lol. Any tips for me? Thanks, Mike.

    This helped so much. I now understand how to program my old Spektrum AR636A and AR636B SAFE receivers. I just have 1 question. I am using a Spektrum DX7s and using my flap/gear 3 position switch for flight modes. I have it set so mode 1 is no AS3X or SAFE, 2 is AS3X but no SAFE, and 3 is AS3X and SAFE. @@joebo9378 There’s not really any point in doing it in SAFE mode. If you let go of the stick, it’s going to fly straight and level. But, you can enable it using FlightEngr’s SMB software. Panic usually has tighter angle limits. Btw, the sticks still work while you’re holding the panic button.

  • @txkflier

    @txkflier

    You would only have two flight modes, but they can be any two that you choose. You could make one position be gyro off, AS3X, or SAFE mode and the other position can be either one of the remaining two modes. I’d start out with an off position and AS3X or SAFE on the other. Once you know what you’re doing, you can put AS3X on one and SAFE on the other position. I generally don’t have a gyro off position. If the gains and direction are set correctly, there’s no need to turn the gyro off. When I first started programming these receivers, I’d take off with the gyro off and turn it on at a safe altitude. Now it doesn’t bother me to make the maiden flight takeoff in SAFE mode. Start out with an expendable airplane before you put an AR636 in a plane you care about.

    Gonna watch this again. A lot of good stuff. I just yesterday ordered a NX6 TX from HH to take advantage of SAFE Select. What is the drawback to SAFE Select?

  • @txkflier

    @txkflier

    Жыл бұрын

    Well, there isn't really a drawback to it. SAFE-Select is Spektrum's process for enabling or disabling the SAFE (Sensor Assisted Flight Envelope) feature in their receivers. SAFE can provide bank and pitch limiting which will keep your aircraft right side up. It can also be set to cause your aircraft to self-level when you release the control sticks. Since experienced pilots don't need SAFE, SAFE-Select gives them a way to disable it. However, even when the SAFE feature is enabled, SAFE mode can be turned off or on in flight using an extra channel. The extra channel can also be used to enable or disable AS3X mode. AS3X will make instantaneous attitude corrections when turbulence tries to bounce your aircraft around. It can also be set to heading hold mode which will try to keep your aircraft in the attitude it was in when you last centered the sticks. However, AS3X won't keep your aircraft right side up; that's what SAFE is for.

  • @ccarlley

    @ccarlley

    Жыл бұрын

    Thank you for answering my question so thoroughly. The reason I asked was at 14:18 you said not to choose SAFE Select (pick standard instead) so I figured there must be a drawback. I see now that would conflict with your 3 flight modes. Thanks again!

  • @txkflier

    @txkflier

    Жыл бұрын

    @@ccarlley It doesn’t conflict. Since I always want the SAFE feature enabled, I enable it during the setup instead of having to bind the receiver a certain way. So, yeah, I suppose that could be considered a disadvantage. For the AR636, the difference is the point where you pull the bind plug during the bind process. The other part of SAFE-Select is where you tell the receiver which channel you’re using to control the flight modes. Since I know I’m going to use channel 7, I set it during the initial setup. That way, I don’t have to hold the sticks down and toward each other while I flip a switch 5 times.

    If the programmer doesn't find an exact match, it'll pop up a screen where you can decide what to do. Stop and think about what you want it to do. I usually click on the "Show All" button, select "New Model", and then select "Use Device Settings". It'll then read the contents of the receiver so that I have a copy of whatever was in it. Afterwards, I can rename it as needed. If you make the wrong choice, it's either going to overwrite a model on the computer or overwrite what's in the receiver.

  • @txkflier

    @txkflier

    Жыл бұрын

    At 20:52, I explain the SAFE mode roll and pitch attitude trims. These are what you edit to make the plane fly straight and level in SAFE mode. However, you must first trim the plane to fly straight and level with SAFE mode turned off using the trim levers on your transmitter and then adjust the linkages so that you can return the trims to center. You shouldn't continue to fly a plane with the trims very far from center. I didn't show this, but I will often save multiple versions of the config file where each one has a slightly different pitch attitude value and I'll put the value in the file name. If I set the pitch attitude trim to -1200, I'll name the file "New AR636 Receiver V1.0 P-1200" so that I'll know what the value is. Then I'll set it to -1400 and save the file again as "New AR636 Receiver V1.0 P-1400". I'll create several configs at home and have them ready to load at the field. That way, I won't have to do a bunch of editing at the field.
