I said, "Grandpa, what's this picture here? It's all black and white, and it ain't real clear Is that you there?", he said, "Yeah, I was 11" "And times were tough back in '35 That's me and uncle Joe just tryna survive a cotton farm In a great depression" If it looks like we were scared to death Like a couple of kids just tryna save each other You should've seen it in color Oh, and this one here's taken overseas In the middle of hell in 1943 in the winter time You can almost see my breath That was my tail gunner ol' Johnny Magee He was a high school teacher from New Orleans And he had my back right through the day we left If it looks like we were scared to death Like a couple of kids just tryna save each other You should've seen it in color A picture's worth a thousand words But you can't see what those shades of gray keep covered You should've seen it in color This one is my favorite one This is me and Grandma in the summer sun All dressed up the day we said our vows You can't tell it here but it was hot that June And that rose was red and her eyes were blue And just look at that smile, I was so proud That's the story of my life Right there in black and white And if it looks like we were scared to death Like a couple of kids just tryna save each other You should've seen it in color Yeah, a picture's worth a thousand words But you can't see what those shades of gray keep covered You should've seen it in color (Should've seen it in color) Yeah, a picture's worth a thousand words But you can't see what those shades of gray keep covered You should've seen it in color

There's something really beautiful about old black and white photos. It's like they hold a mystery that you try to fill in with your imagination. With all of this technology we have now our grand kids will be able to go back and watch videos of us when we were young, and they'll be able to see our personalities, and see what we were like. But we don't get that with our grandparents. When we're looking at old pictures we just have to use our imaginations to try and fill in that mystery, it's really wholesome and beautiful.

20 year old gen Z here. Raised by my great grandparents half my life, got to meet my great great grandparents who lived through the great depression and WW2. Learned a lot, how to be frugal, how to redneck engineer stuff to make it work, and how important the past actually is. My great grandparents are still alive thank the lord, but I am to inherit most of my great grandfathers heirlooms. These are the things I will cherish forever, and each one holds a memory to when I was growing up. As I sit at my desk that was once my great great grandmothers listening to this song typing this out, it brings a tear to my eye every time.

This emotional number about an elderly man looking back at his life was written by Johnson as a tribute to his grandfather. The country singer-songwriter explained to Roughstock: "He died in 2000; I've got memories of him. He didn't know I was a songwriter or a singer. He just knew I could sing and write and that I was moving Nashville to get it done. He died probably the first eight months that I was in town. I've always wanted to pay tribute back to thank him for the lessons growing up, all the conversations with him. Nobody ever pays attention to that stuff until they're gone I'm afraid. I had a long way to go, I wanted him to be around a lot longer, I wasn't ready for him to go. So it's kind of appropriate way to introduce this album to the public." This was named Song of the Year at the 2009 Academy of Country Music Awards. In his acceptance speech, Johnson said: "I thank these two guys up here - Lee Miller and James Otto - for helping me write this song. Thanks to my band, too, for going in on an off day and producing an off record." Later in the year, the song won the 2009 CMA Song of the Year Award. Lee Miller told the story behind the song's inspiration for the book Nashville Songwriter: The Inside Stories Behind Country Music's Greatest Hits: by Jake Brown. "You look for the phrase that gives you a reason to write a song," he said. "And I was telling Jamey a story about some event that I'd been to, and it was a story … about Nashville back in the '60s and some pictures in black and white … I'm talking, and he's kind of zoned out … and he said, 'There's your idea. You think that's somethin', you should've seen it in color.'" He added "Those ideas are hard to come by … At that point, just don't mess it up; just write it correctly." Miller and Johnson, along with James Otto began talking about their own grandparents, and the song stemmed from memories of their grandfathers. "In a lot of ways, it's a song about our grandfathers," Miller said. The second verse ("In the middle of hell in 1943...) is about the experiences of Lee Miller's grandfather during World War II. This song.. makes me miss my dad. Sitting on his lap looking at the old pictures and asking him so many questions. Those people in those pictures all had hopes, fears, loves, they all were human like you and me. Never forget that. A picture is a look into a single moment in a persons life. I don't like pictures of me, simply because I was there, and I remember it. You can look at my pictures but there are some that I refuse to talk about. Those memories are mine and mine alone. I may have some photo's on black and white film but guys, that life was being lived in full technicolor. I close my eyes and that black car is really a beautiful purple that I could never describe. Talk to an older person today, they have wisdom that you don't realize you need.

He's made 4 albums in his life and had several very successful songs that he released, but he has written many hit songs for other artists. He's really more of a song writer. He's been in the music industry for 20 years now.

I believe that when Grandpa says: “But you can't see what those shades of gray keep covered You should've seen it in color”, he is talking about seeing it through their eyes. Meaning they the picture only tells part of the story. It’s like when you see a picture of you and your bestie. You were there, you know what happened. Someone else will just see a picture of the two of you, with little or no context. (in color)

Amen Amber, when we are young we are very much into ourselves. I remember many stories my dad would tell and as a youth I would think not again. Now in my 70’s I have more questions I wish I could ask and get answers to. I have black and white pictures of our family and love looking at them. Time is fleeting and to the younger folks out there listen and ask questions because that will be a treasure when you are older.

As I recall. you like George Strait. Well, Jamey co-wrote a song entitled "Give It Away" (inspired by Jamey's divorce - remember, this is country music ; ) and George Strait recorded it and it was his 41st #1 hit (and Single of the Year and Song of the Year), which set a new record for #1 country hits, surpassing Conway Twitty's 40. Another song of Jamey's I like personally is "Between Jennings and Jones".

My dad spent most my childhood in the Navy, my mom was a Marine, after that they both spent many years off traveling for construction jobs. So I spent most of my time with my grandparents who were children of the great depression and WW2. So this song resonates with me so hard. Looking at those old pictures and hearing stories of how my grandparents grew up through all of that hardship. Looking at all of the black and white pictures of them in their teens and twenties as they worked themselves to the bone starting a new family...you'd have no idea how hard it really was for them through all the smiles they had on their faces as they were working sugar cane or cotton fields or caring for all of their siblings who tended not to make it.

I’ve got a pic of my grandparents (dad’s parents). I think it was taken at mom and dad’s wedding in the 50’s. Papa has an ear to ear grin holding a cigar with his arm around mama. She’s smiling in the way I’ll always remember her. First time I heard this song, he had me hooked from the first line. As soon as he got to the wedding picture, it became personal because I saw my grandparent’s pic in my head. That’s always been my favorite pic of them and this is a reminder why. Thank y’all for what you’re doing.

My Dad was born in 1922, he lived through the Depression and joined the Army AirForce in 1939. He survived WWII and married my Mom in 1945. My Dad and Mom were members of the greatest generation this country ever produced. Kids today have no idea what doing without or sacrifice even means. They think it is going without their morning latte. I've reached a point in life now that I'm the one who's life is now in black and white, Color photography didn't become a thing until the late 1960's early 70's. Sadly, we are soon to be gone and forgotten and with us, it seems the lessons we learned and tried to pass along. But, such is life I suppose, If you don't learn from history or those who went before you, you are doomed to repeat the same mistakes.

just because our sacrifices don’t look the same doesn’t mean we didn’t sacrifice. millennials haven’t gone 10 full years without a new economic recession since they were born. ‘85, .com bubble, housing crisis, covid, and what we have now. we’ve been through 9/11 and that singular event shaped what our lives would become. we’ve had a school shooting more than once a week on average since the late 2000s. we have the lowest buying power of any generation in this country’s history - despite being the most overqualified and the economy being bigger than ever. 2/3 of us will never become homeowners if the trend continues. something like 20% of us will deal with opiate addiction (that’s one out of every five. if you have 3 kids and your sibling has 2, one of those kids will be a lifelong addict) we & gen z spent our formative years in lockdown. we watched our parents’ home get foreclosed upon. something like 1/10-1/15 of us will experience some level of homelessness. real wages have stagnated since the 60s. our suicide rate is the highest of any generation in history. and to top it all off we get blamed for the mess our parents & grandparents left us in. the average millennial has only been in the workforce 10 years, yet we’ve been blamed for everything since the late 2000s. and to top it off, we now have to deal with the aftermath of the older generations’ daily interactions with lead paint, which is causing severe, rapid, and early mental decline in our loved ones and have to shoulder the burden of caring for adults at a younger age than any previous generation.

Girl, I cried right along with you. This song does it to me every single time. My mom died a month shy of 54, I was 23 years old at the time (I'm 53 now). I have a million questions I never thought to ask while she was alive, I was too young to know I needed to ask questions that only she could answer. My dad died two years later so I was an orphan at 25. My parents were immigrants, I have no aunt's, uncle's, grandparents, cousins... no one, so the history died with them. So, yeah, songs like this make me cry and that's okay. It's a beautiful song and he really has a very emotive voice so it just makes it that much better.

Lillian, you have been through so much! I cried too bc my daddy went home in 2015, and I'm hearing this on Thanksgiving, his fav holiday, and one of his all time favorite songs. But, hearing your story, is really what brought the tears, back, after listening! You've gotta be so strong! And I wanted to give you my condolences, reach out to you, tell you that I read your whole comment, and you're in my thoughts. And to have a Happy Thanksgiving. Bc, there here with us, too! God bless you and your family. 🦃❤🤎

I'm not particularly stronger than the average person, we all just deal with life as it comes...one battle at a time. God is good, I am very blessed. And songs like this remind me to continue to share the family stories that I do know with my kids so they can keep them alive by sharing them with their future children. 😊

I lost my dad when I was 17. I'd love to sit down and talk with him about his life. When you are young, you don't think about that (and I didn't). I don't know hardly anything. His experience as a Navy Corpsman in the Vietnam war, his life as a young teacher, why he went back to grad school, his cancer. I know nothing. I'd settle for black and white quite frankly.

Amber, your reaction nearly brought me to tears. I lost my mom to cancer in 1980, about three weeks before my 18th birthday. Pictures were a luxury we couldn't often afford so I don't have many photos of her. She was 49. I think we were both feeling that song... I'm looking forward to Friday's film! To all of the “new” generation. Remember to create physical photo albums. Having a billion selfies in your phone is not what will be valuable, when sharing memories with others. It’s the candid/ non posed pics that are the best. Not close-ups, that void the surroundings. Like Aunt Mary’s old car, that everyone learned to drive...etc.

Just yesterday my mom (she's 87) gave me a file boc full of black & white photos from the 40's, 50's, and 60's of my relatives as kids, and she asked if I could look through them and scan some of the good ones into my computer. I spent most of the day and evening working on them and I am amazed at the history in them. We lost my dad in Vietnam in 1968, and it hurts even more to know how many things I never got the chance to hear from him.
