    As someone that's worked at a coffee shop before, I can say that your interactions could entirely be genuine, and not to worry about the transactional nature. I befriended a comic book artist actually once, and we got drinks a few times outside of the coffee shop as friends, and I think fondly on that experience because I would have never met half as many interesting people had I never worked there.

    Your pencil drawings are on par with everything else you do, stunning. On a side note I can't stop thinking about something you said in your Q&A how we are meat grinders. We really are sentient sausages that make more sausages or things that reflect everything we are connected to. I think I can speak for a lot of people here saying the sausages we put out into the world are so much better because of you, your channel and the beautiful things you create. ❤

    I used to go to a place for morning coffee/writing time. I made friends with one of the waitresses. Over the course of several years we developed a really great and precious friendship. After my Mom passed, she became like a second "mom". We remained friends until covid took her. I love your doodles and seeing it done in graphite really thrills me as it;s my favorite medium. Hope you have a great week!

    Thank you for the incredible art and watching gives me lots of tips. You give tips but observing helps. I wish I could afford a fountain pen. I mean I could but I have twin 3.5 year old boys so I can't justify spending the 40$ or whatever on a Lamy safari as I would want the pen set with the cartridges and the power piston. Probably use the cartridges until I was comfortable then move onto the piston and better ink. Anyways I draw just about everyday. Sometimes something new, or just techniques, sometimes on something I've been drawing for a while but needed to figure out how to approach a certain section of the page.

    I'm very chatty, and so I end up having long, involved conversations with a lot of people around me. There's a gas station that I stop at several times a week, and I know a good chunk of the life stories of the people working there. It's actually never occurred to me to wonder if they're friends, or not friends, or if we would be friends if we ran into each other elsewhere. Interesting thought! Really beautiful pencil sketch, Peter.

    Hey Peter, I’ve watched your videos about 5 years now and started using technical pens because of u, first off I want to confirm that yes fountain pen ink does work way better in them but second off staedler makes a much better pen than rotring and the pen body is actually a built in tool to take itself apart so u can clean it and the pen body is built way more durable than a rotring and u most likely will never have any dry rot or splitting or damage of any kind occur over time or with use

    Having worked in retail, it's fun to have favorite customers. The people that tip good (where tips are a thing) have an advantage. But other than the tip, you're not paying THEM, you're paying the business. You don't have to commit to anything by extending the casual chat beyond the purchase of your coffee.

    I can see how that small relationship could feel tainted by the aspect of it being transactional. I would say that maybe casually bringing up the fact that it feels weird tipping a friend could give you more insight into their feelings about the interaction. Ultimately I would say that it's probably safe to assume that they aren't thinking about how the intersection is transactional and they are probably just happy to have a nice regular that they get to share ideas, feelings, experiences, ect with! Hope it goes well!

    I would be concerned with them thinking I’m bringing it up because I don’t want to have to tip them all the time. Then even if you explain that that’s not the case they might think ‘yeah, sure buddy’ The real solution is to not overthink social interactions lol

    I wouldn't put much thought into the whole coffee dilemma, the nuggets of friendship... Because then you'll get to questions like: "Would this person even be talking to me in the first place if I WASN'T a customer?" and other dumb sh¡† like that... If you want to talk, just talk. If you don't, then go. Having "routine friends" is a perfectly normal occurrence that just happens, and if you're interactions are positive, can also help make someone else's day feel more complete or in some cases, off if they didn't see you. Some become so accustomed, or bonded to your interactions, that a form of concern develops if that routine is broken. Not just because their own day is thrown off, but because of the unknown of what caused your lack of presence... Like "That's weird, I haven't seen Peter in a while, I hope he's alright..." But yeah... Don't think about it too much. Just enjoy the nuggets for what they are, or become, however long they last.

    Chocolate and caramel = heaven. I have worked in Coffee stall and food place which served coffee it's nice to make conversation but being introvert can be difficult for me. I had customer called me rude because I was mostly quiet. I'm not the one for small talk. I rarely drink coffee but mainly tea. I love drawing with pencils because you can easily achieve wide range of shades. I have these water colour graphite pencils by faber castelle and yet to try them out fully.

    When I used to write music with a pen we used a bit of something called photo flo. This seemed to keep the pen working and not plugged up. I saw photo flo in a store here in Italy recently, so it seems that it is still available. Worth a try as most of us are always looking for permanent ink from a fountain pen.

    not sure how I feel, I think the pencil drawings for me are marginally better then the ink drawings. But I might be biased since I also like draw with ink and sketch with pencil and I like the way pencil feels better (more values). On a side note, when I bought my coffee from the same place every day I would sit on the side and drink it there and talk to the barristers in-between customers. They would gossip about each other to me as well as have general chats. We did end up being friends.

    Hi Peter, thanks, as always, for your great drawings! Re the coffee cart, I think as long as you're paying for your coffee, it's transactional and a tip is appropriate because if the barista's employed, they still need the income. If you think there's a possibility of friendship, I reckon it only really becomes friendship when you and they feel comfortable to meet up in a different context, maybe both having coffee somewhere else, or going to a museum, a walk in the park... All best wishes to you.

  • @mjpete27
    @mjpete27 Жыл бұрын

    Hullo Peter, Yep friendship after a certain age is terribly difficult to manage! I offer this small insight, If you want something outside of the casual acquaintance relationship and believe it may be something or have potential for something more. Steer a conversation towards something that has been a common theme in the past or recent and see if that perhaps they would like to go do that activity like visiting a museum or see that new movie you talked about. I have had marginal success and was able to codify certain associations with potential friends and developed into more or devolve back to a casual interaction that both can still enjoy. It does take that risk of failure and awkwardness to future interactions, but if you do not try you will never know and be just a bit more lonely, well perhaps not! I so enjoy your channel and believe that anyone would have their lives enriched with you in theirs. Be well and stay safe out there!
