Spectacular RC Typhoon WWII plane crash at KAMS Warbirds day 2024

Ойын-сауық

Glenn's beautiful new Typhoon suffered a serious structural failure on final. This was only its third or fourth flight. The video clearly shows the right wing detaching from the fuselage and rotating around the spar. Such a shame ... it was only seconds from landing safely.

Blackhorse Models use a forked tab that protudes into the fuse that is clamped with a screw to secure the wings in position. This screw was tensioned down prior to the first flight of the day. The crash happened during the landing approach on the 2nd flight. The forked tab is an inferior method of securing the wings as engine vibrations and landing loads caused the wing to slide out.

I had an Sig Somethin’ Xtra do that. The wing anti rotation dowel had never been glued in and the engine vibration caused it to walk to one side. The instructions were to glue in the dowel after the plane was covered. The plane had been built but never flown and was left to my club by a widow with the rest of his collection. Since I didn’t read the manual I wasn’t aware of the glue it in step. Considering how it came down the nose took the biggest hit of everything. It will be rebuilt, when I have time and am in the mood to deal with it.

Two of my favourite aircraft are the Hawker Hurricane and the Hawker Typhoon... your model is superb! The fuselage broke almost in the spot the made the Typhoon 1B infamous. I used to build and fly Guillows aircraft and the first couple of crack-ups were disheartening, until I realised that repairing the damage was as relaxing and as rewarding as building the model. I hope your repairs aren't too extensive.

Hi Brad, this was the 2nd flight of the day. The forked tab that protrudes into the fuse and is secured with a screw pulled out. I assume a combination of engine vibration and side slip on the touch and go caused the wing to slide out. I'll never use that system to secure wings again. Fortunately the engine (OS GF40) and electronics survived.

I can see spending a few thousand on model, but spending obscene amounts of money and potentially years building it just doesn’t make sense as some of these people do. Unlike real aircraft these are not nearly as reliable, so eventually you crash it or have some other mishap. Again not a huge deal provided you didn’t mortgage the house to buy it.

Flying too fast. Aproach speed crazy fast. Slow the plane down for a more realistic appearance. And try and shed more speed (energy) for landing. On final use a higher angle of attack and use the engine to adjust your touch down point. You're land with way too much energy.

@@tonywright8294 I spent the last 4 days repairing my ESM T-28 nosegear and one main that were torn during an aborted take off. The materials used are beyond apalling. The wing halves are held by one liteply dihedral brace, the ribs that hold the flap and aileron servo trays are 1.5 mm thick liteply and the list goes on and on. If you have not tried one of these crappos, I suggest you do - you will learn very quickly the meaning of "Buy cheap - buy twice". By the way, I have been in this hobby for 57 years now, mostly scratch building so I believe that I know a thing or two.
