Spectacular RC Typhoon WWII plane crash at KAMS Warbirds day 2024
Ойын-сауық
Glenn's beautiful new Typhoon suffered a serious structural failure on final. This was only its third or fourth flight. The video clearly shows the right wing detaching from the fuselage and rotating around the spar. Such a shame ... it was only seconds from landing safely.

Blackhorse Models use a forked tab that protudes into the fuse that is clamped with a screw to secure the wings in position. This screw was tensioned down prior to the first flight of the day. The crash happened during the landing approach on the 2nd flight. The forked tab is an inferior method of securing the wings as engine vibrations and landing loads caused the wing to slide out.
I had an Sig Somethin’ Xtra do that. The wing anti rotation dowel had never been glued in and the engine vibration caused it to walk to one side. The instructions were to glue in the dowel after the plane was covered. The plane had been built but never flown and was left to my club by a widow with the rest of his collection. Since I didn’t read the manual I wasn’t aware of the glue it in step. Considering how it came down the nose took the biggest hit of everything. It will be rebuilt, when I have time and am in the mood to deal with it.
The moment your wing turns into a flight control.😮
Two of my favourite aircraft are the Hawker Hurricane and the Hawker Typhoon... your model is superb! The fuselage broke almost in the spot the made the Typhoon 1B infamous. I used to build and fly Guillows aircraft and the first couple of crack-ups were disheartening, until I realised that repairing the damage was as relaxing and as rewarding as building the model. I hope your repairs aren't too extensive.

Fishplates Fishplates !!!!
The really shity part is that it was on the ground before the go around. Considering what failed the aircraft is in great shape. Someone will take the time to fix it
The problem wing looks to be the only thing reasonably intact.
The cockpit bubble survived a heavy blow!
Ooooh bad luck there . I have a 1.6 scale plan built typhoon make sure mine dosnt suffer same problem.
This guy a Boeing MAX engineer? 😮
Impressive that the model managed to replicate the structural weakness of the rear fuselage that plagued the full-scale aircraft early on.
When i flew r/c years ago I rarely built and flew a plane out of the box without adding some modifications that I think needed adding, usually to strengthen some part or other.
This is why the early aviators gave up on wing warping for roll axis control...
Great footage Warren!

Thanks Sarel
The port wing became unsecured on approach. Sounds like the wing bolt on the wing tube came loose.
They never did iron all the bugs out of the Typhoon did they.... Losses due to tail separation right up till the end of the war. Even after fish plates and a horizontal stab redesign. Sorry for your loss...
The pilot escaped unharmed.
Wow, that wing just suddenly turned into a propeller.
My great uncle Wm "Killy" Kilpatrick flew real Typhoons. You should google his experiences!
Well thats pretty conclusive.
Pulled off a 3 point landing though....

Flew the wing right off her.....
Did they determine why the wing seperated?
There's no doubt, somebody forgot to tighten the wing bolt. I've seen this many times experienced it once myself. Everybody does it one time or another.
Props ok!!
Well she was stunning, but taken in her prime! Not sure I could be quite as calm about it as you were...but we all know the stakes and play anyway.
Kinda like a real Tiffy, airframe failure.
Damn! That sucked.
Great video resolution. Missing wing bolt?

Thanks - I was hoping to capture a nice landing. I don't think that the wing bolt was missing, but from what the pilot described, it just tightens a tounge, so may have come loose.

Bummer Glenn. Did the wing bolts come out in flight?

Glenn is talking about a forked tang wing attachment that somehow didn't hold. Apparently it is quite a common attachment method for large models.

That's probably a forked tounge!

Hi Brad, this was the 2nd flight of the day. The forked tab that protrudes into the fuse and is secured with a screw pulled out. I assume a combination of engine vibration and side slip on the touch and go caused the wing to slide out. I'll never use that system to secure wings again. Fortunately the engine (OS GF40) and electronics survived.

SPECTACULAR!
The chinesium came apart, or maybe vietnesium depending on the type of imitation hard balsa used.

massive wing root failure
That’s what you get for flying around a mock 39 lol
And that's why i dont fly RC aircraft, preferring to watch others. I couldnt cope with this kind of crash in a plane on which I'd spend dozens of hours of work.

Not to mention some of the huge ones with actual jet engines and what not can cost $30k usd thereabouts, or even more. Better be a good pilot.

You’re a fool. I have a Kadet Senior that’s over 20 years old. Almost anyone can fly one of those successfully. I keep it interesting by putting cameras and gadgets on it sometimes. Love going out to the field and chatting as well as participating in some worry free flying.

@@falconeaterf15 Until someone flys their model into yours, or you screw up one day and end up in one of these compilations. I can see spending a few thousand on model, but spending obscene amounts of money and potentially years building it just doesn’t make sense as some of these people do. Unlike real aircraft these are not nearly as reliable, so eventually you crash it or have some other mishap. Again not a huge deal provided you didn’t mortgage the house to buy it.

When a Typhoon decides it really wants to become a 3D model ...😂
Flying too fast. Aproach speed crazy fast. Slow the plane down for a more realistic appearance. And try and shed more speed (energy) for landing. On final use a higher angle of attack and use the engine to adjust your touch down point. You're land with way too much energy.

errr no - what an odd comment to make. The wing separated…do you actually fly rc, or just watch videos of folks who are enjoying the hobby … often for a lifetime???
Those armaments' didn't help either, as far as drag
Pretty much all British fighters of that era require two actual wings to fly. One of their many quirks.
Well that sucks …..🤬😱🤷🙋♂️🖖🏻
With an ARF you are always relying on an unknown designer and some process worker to have done their jobs properly. I would rather build it myself. At least I would know who to blame.

Buy Chinese/Vietanmese/Thai ARFs and have fun. All these manufacturers have learned long ago that all that matters is that their models look like a million dollars on the outside, the structures can be glued with spit, who cares? You get what you pay for! Buy cheap - buy twice!

@@tonywright8294 I spent the last 4 days repairing my ESM T-28 nosegear and one main that were torn during an aborted take off. The materials used are beyond apalling. The wing halves are held by one liteply dihedral brace, the ribs that hold the flap and aileron servo trays are 1.5 mm thick liteply and the list goes on and on. If you have not tried one of these crappos, I suggest you do - you will learn very quickly the meaning of "Buy cheap - buy twice". By the way, I have been in this hobby for 57 years now, mostly scratch building so I believe that I know a thing or two.

The plane came to me as a trade, it was new in box and therefore didn't owe me too much. The OS GF40 survived, that was my primary concern.
