The problem with my Anthias is that they do to well they grow so large I can no longer keep them. I believe simply replicating their environment as best as possible is what keeps them going.. they also love cave structures and not so much the open environment. Less stress I believe... Great video and knowledge on Anthias. Look forward to your next video.

Thank you. I really enjoy these videos and having a biologist's input is more reassuring, Ms. Hilary's credentials lend a level of credibility which is hard to find on this platform. It let's me take the video information at face value. And it's usually quite helpful.

I have one lyretail in my system. I broadcast feed 2-3 times a day with my own little recipe of frozen mysis soaked in liquid garlic with a pinch of omnivore pellets and crushed krill. Then my auto feeder turns once a day between lunch and dinner just to give them another blast of food. I’ve had it for about 6 months now and it’s pretty active for most of the day. I really enjoy it

Appreciate the video! Your timing is perfect as I just purchased five African Lyretail Anthias (1 super handsome male and 4 pretty females of different sizes). Your the second person warning about NOT feeding enough so I'll definitely take it seriously. I've had them for close to a month now, feeding once a day and just identified they are picky and do not like the Hikari Krill and seem to really prefer mysis of different types. I was surprised they aren't into the frozen PE Calanus since my chromis goes crazy over it (having a smaller mouth). They're...semi-interested in the various Hikari brine I feed... and I'm not entirely sure if they eat the nori I feed every morning. I'll for sure look into the options for vitamin boost, I'm sure all the fish will benefit from an occasional dose.

We lose a lot at the store, but some have great personalities… others hide 24/7, recommend the lyretail over pigmy purple anthias You are a great help!

Great video Hillary! Anthias are my all time favorite fish in a reef tank. I almost feel like a reef tank is naked without them. Uhhh and you better be working a part 2 😂. You didn’t even cover the species that I keep! Or the others that I would like to keep. Oh I just realized, maybe you didn’t cover them because I shouldn’t be wanting to keep them or keeping them in the first place. 😱

I have had an Amethyst anthias for over a year which is not on the list here and is supposed to be expert level fish but I feed it 2-4 times a day and its growing. It will eat frozen only. Goes nuts for brine, loves other small frozen food too like oyster eggs, and cyclops. It will eat Mysis too if the pieces are small enough. :)

I like to feed >3 times a day... but I feel like Anthias and other planktonic feeders (like fairy wrasse) do better with many more small feedings ;)

Bimaculatus or bartletts Anthias? I’m looking to add 5 females and 1 male. Which would you suggest for a 60x25x24 system? I already feed about 5 times a day (I work nights so I’m home throughout the day mostly)

Hilary, I have tried several time to add some lyretails to my tank. one came down with uronema. Tried kanaplex, API general cure, formalin but it did not worked. Every 3 days, one would die until they were all gone. Would love to try again. What is your suggestion of a pre treatment with Mardel?

Your best bet is going through a company that does quarantine for you. Dr. Reef is an example. They will then send you a video of them eating, swimming, and their color for you to inspect. My LFS does QT and I asked to see them eat. I bought 3 females, don’t get a male just let them figure it out to minimize stress and fighting. Haven’t had problems and they are probably the healthiest fish in my reef. Lots of flow, lots of small feedings.

I brought three Lyretail Anthias, one male and two female. They all look good for 2 months and then the smallest of them died. I started paying more attention. The second female stopped eating always move to stay attached to cleaner shrimp. And after a week even this died. I am left with one male. Not sure what is going on here. I have other fish in the tank all doing well. This is my first tank brought 6 months ago from a friend who was moving out.

Check to see if any of your local fish stores offer live foods. Live brine, for example, isn't super nutritious, but sometimes it can help get stubborn fish eating. I'd also recommend reaching out to the shop/vendor you got the fish from and ask what they feed their fish so that you can try feeding the same food.

There must be more than one species of anthias that live in the shallows, as I have seen many huge schools of them, by the hundreds and thousands after completing my safety checks and floating around 5 meters or so under water along the reefs of Komodo and Raja Ampat in Indonesia.

your best bet is to get them from a supplier like TSM Aquatics or Marine Collectors. these fish QT awful and some are a nightmare to get eating. Also long term garlic use has been proven to destroy the fishes liver.

This fish is really abused in our Hobbie by non experienced hobbyist. I watched a guy buy 6 at a LFS knowing he had predatory fish. And also knowing he didn't add his fish in the correct order . Still buys them. Comes back 2 weeks later and buys 6 more. Hmmmm I wonder what happen to the other 6 six 🤔 😕 this is why the lacy act is taking flight. Because of inexperienced hobbyist.
