Spearfishing Pike in Provo river, Utah. Invasive species removal and dinner.

This dive was originally going to be a carp shoot but ended up being one of my most fun filled dives to date. After spotting a small Pike I luckily ran into DNR (Fish cop). I asked if I legally could spear pike in Provo river knowing they are invasive to the river and are unwanted there. He replied (Yes, as long as you have a valid fishing license) . He also said to (be careful and not shoot any walleye for they are currently spawning and its illegal to be in possession of one). Utah lake/Provo river are not on the list of places that we can spear game fish but carp can be speared anywhere its legal to fish with rod and real. Regulations can change yearly so be sure you are current on what and where you spearfish. This was a great time and I feel good helping out the ecosystem by removing these invasive pike. Very nice! When I lived in/spearfished Utah I always wanted to try spearing Utah lake right at the mouth of the Provo. Would have to be a rainy day to not piss off the shore fisherman though.

Spring, when the water is about 45F. They diverted the river and changed some things this year though. I do t think it would be as good anymore.

What kind of pole spear do you use? Would you recommend it to a beginner spearfisher?

  • @Hero_Spearo

I primarily use a Gat-ku with a slip tip. They are one of the top of the line spear brands. It’s definitely my favorite with Evolve in close second. Yeah I recommend it but they are pricy ($350-$450). About as much as a good spear gun. If you aren’t looking to invest that much into one I would recommend getting a cheep $50 yellow one off Amazon to start with.

Evil to some hero to others. Either way they were tasty and enjoyed by friends and myself. Yeah I don’t think they are going anywhere either. I’m fact I think most people want them in there. The biggest issue with them being in Utah lake is they will definitely effect the current numbers of the endangered June sucker. Thanks for watching!

The spot in this video is currently all messed up. The state has diverted the river and other things that have made it hard to spear. I’m hoping it’s fixed by next spring. I haven’t been out much this year but maybe we can make something happen.

You don't need permission to catch and kill pike they don't belong in Utah lake.
