Lake Powell, National Fresh Water Spearfishing Chanpionship

2022 Spearfishing Nationals was held at lake Powell. The lake is extremely low but is still great fishing. The water was clear and fish were in abundance. although I didn't bag any stripers there were a lot shot by other competitors. After competing in this tournament I am determined to improve. Thank you all for your support and thanks for watching!

    Interesting. Didn't know this fun still existed. I competition shot with the Southwest Council of Skin Diving Clubs in the 1960s and 1970s. Held the Nationals at Lake Amistad in Texas in 1975 and 1977. We always used scuba and spearguns, no pole spears. We only shot rough fish, no game fish.

    That’s awesome! Thanks for sharing. There aren’t many people who currently spearfish freshwater. I only can imagine how few people did back then. I bet you have some amazing stories.

    @@Hero_Spearo FEW? Almost monthly spearfishing competitions drew over 100 divers, mainly from Texas, Oklahoma, sometimes Missouri and Louisiana. Too many wimps and PC freaks now.

    @@macmccollum6064 oh, I would have guessed the sport was less popular back then being so new. To this day get people asking what I’m doing almost every time I go out. I just assumed it was even more foreign to people that long ago.

    Nice video, the carp are put into the bins to be collected and donated to local towns for various purposes. The world tournament is at Lake Powell this year (2023).

    Is that a Gatku polespear? What made you switch from the slip tip to the flopper tip? How does the hybrid front end compare to the full aluminum front end?

  • @Hero_Spearo

    @Hero_Spearo

    8 ай бұрын

    Yeah it’s a Gatku. The line attaching the slip tip to the pole ended up snapping and the carp swam away with the tip 😅. I feel like the flexible end of the spear makes it shoot faster and helps prevent the fish from tearing off when I’m not using a slip tip.

    Nice video and good shot’s!! It’s just crazy that they throw away all that tasty carp’s. In Europe carp is considered a very good eating fish. And that’s not all, in east Germany and some parts of east Europe there is the tradition to eat carp for Christmas. So for you Americans it would be like filling dumpster with turkeys.

    Thanks for the comment and the great analogy. I have tried carp a couple times and honestly I didn’t like it. Maybe it’s something in the water that makes them taste different. 🤷‍♂️😁😅

    I couldn’t lisEn to the sound so excuse me if this was mentioned. My question is, were you scored in a different division since you were using a pole spear? Awesome shooting! That lake offers some great action. I hunt Minnesota, Iowa and Wisconsin lakes. Carp mostly and few big sheepshead and buffalo.

    No, I was in the same division as everyone else. I’ve heard talk of doing something along those lines though. There was a small local tournament that gave extra points to those who strictly used a pole spear. Sounds fun man! Is sheepshead a saltwater fish? I’ve yet to dive salt water. Thanks for the sub!

  • @500stick

    Funny you should ask about sheepshead! Can get quite confusing. There’s three completely different species that we call sheepshead in North America. There’s an Atlantic one that is striped and has a stout body like a big tilapia. And then there’s the Pacific sheepshead which is a large colorful, strange looking fish that’s a favorite of kelp spearfishers. Has fangs like a dog. Then there’s the lowly freshwater sheepshead whose technical name is freshwater drum. And it has a saltwater cousin that looks just like it, called a saltwater drum. All of these “sheepshead” are good eating and I’ve caught or speared all of them except the saltwater drum.

    Yeah you should get extra points for using a pole spear! I know how hard it is to nail big carp with a big speargun and your skills are quite impressive!
