Spearfishing Giant Atlantic HALIBUT in Norway

The idea for this trip was birthed around three years ago when I first saw a photo of one of these fish whilst researching diving opportunities in Europe before I moved to the UK from Australia. Countless hours of planning and preparation saw myself, Andrew Gomm, Joose Seppälä, Bryson Sheehy & Nikki Watt diving in the Arctic Circle in the top end of Norway. A remote and beautiful part of the world however the diving for halibut is extremely difficult. Long days drifting in cold water, thick wetsuits & mental torture.
Over five days diving we put three of these incredible fish into the boat. Absolutely none of the fish was wasted and everything was consumed; I am still enjoying halibut fillets four months later.
Filmed by Daniel Mann, additional footage from Joose, Bryson & Nikki.

    Nice vid, but it's sad to see such big halibuts being killed in 2017/2018.. I'm from Sweden and many of us travel to Norway each year fishing for halibut, and for halibut bigger than 130cm it's always C&R to maintain the population, and we never bring them up into the boat because of the risk of spinal injuries. This is not easy for you to know, and the camp owners should have told you this. But have it in mind when traveling to new places.. and also have it in mind in your own country. Big fish are important.

    In times when humans did not have big numbers it must have been amazing. I dream of days of amazing harmonic hunting. Being in tune and being able to harvest these amazing creatures, but alas, there is just too many of us it is sad 😑 cool video tho, that must take serious skill to do! How old do you think that fish was?

    There is no mentioning of this in the video, but I suspect it would be a major party spoiler: There is a legal maximum limit for tourists bringning fish out of Norway. The limit is set at 20 kilogram/person for those visiting registered tourist-fishing camps. Fishing outside registered fishing-camps the limit is 10 kilogram/person. At the moment the fines for breaking the export limits are set at NOK8.000(EUR800) + NOK200(EUR20)/kilogram of fish exceeding the limit. I suspect the fines will be raising sharply in the years to come...

  • @linusack9455

    @linusack9455

    And most registered fishing camp have a maximum size on halibut, usally around 130cm witch is around 30kg. So everyting below 80cm or above 130cm go back in the Sea. Even the fish industry in Norway throw back big halibuts, even if they are dead. I think they can get a fine if they bring them back.

  • @DanielMann

    @@DanielMann No law. But I know a few camps that do tell their klients to try and release big fish above 130ish cm. 130+ fish is a good fish for reproduction. And they dont taste very good if they get bigger. I'm an angler though, easier to release. :) Nice video! You really got the scenery on point, it's hard to do!

    Erm..not to be disparaging, but where is the challenge in spearing flatfish? It is not as if they put up much of a fight or are hard to spear? I take it they are just speared for their food value? And before the insults start flying, please note that I also surf and river fish, but not spearfishing. I have speared sole on sandbanks using a soling fork.

    Hey Andrew the challenge is certainly there. We had five divers searching for five days each - a total of 25 days equivalent really and only 3 fish put in the boat. Finding them in such a vast coastline is a challenge. Diving in very cold water all day looking and not seeing is a challenge. Landing one is a challenge as you can see in the video they put up a huge fight - like trying to fight a front door, they are really big fish. Small flatfish like plaice and turbot sure not much fight in them. The actual pulling of the trigger may not be so hard but like every other form of hunting pulling the trigger isn’t the hard part. Finding the quarry and getting yourself into a position to pull the trigger is the greatest challenge.

    Andrew Slaughter i dont spear fish either but they obviously do it for the thrill, it is not a contest, pole fishing is not very hard either but very fun.

    Minke Whale too (that's what was on the barbecue at the end), conservation wise they are of an 'least concern' species, but that won't last too long when more tourists turn up after watching videos like this.
