I’m 3/4 Chinese and 1/4 Japanese and I moved to Canada when I was 6 so my Chinese and Japanese are pretty much on the same boat. My parents got divorced when I was 7 and I lived with my mom so I learned how to speak Cantonese and some Mandarin from her. My grandma on my dad’s side spoke to me with conversational Japanese but she was fluent in English so we mostly used that. She passed away when I was in middle school... I was heart broken and filled with regret that I didn’t take the time to learn more of the Japanese culture from her. I felt like I let her down and lost a part of me, because she was the only one from my dad’s side who stayed connected with me (my dad and I barely spoke... maybe once or twice a year). I always feel so sad when I think about my disconnection with both cultures and languages. Learning as an adult is so much harder, especially with no one around who speaks the language (I got married and moved to the US, so I don’t see or talk to my mother as much anymore). Some days I feel kind of lost because I lived in Toronto and moving to the US was kind of a culture shock (I’ve never been so aware of the fact that I’m Asian until I moved to the US - I was always just... me, up until that point). I felt like I lost myself even more. A part of me still doesn’t really know how to process my everyday life, because of how different it is from the one I had. It’s been 5 years and I’m still not used to it. You’ve inspired me to learn my languages! Your relationship with your mother is beautiful btw. I wish my mom could connect with me that way. You’ve certainly become one of my favourite people - good luck in your learning Leah! ☺️

I am half Chinese but I never learned how to talk in Chinese in my 20 years of living : ( i have always felt weird about it because it makes me feel like I'm not Chinese enough??? if that makes sense.
