*EDIT:* Another user pointed me to a Washington Post article which had a pic of a notecard. The student's each had their own, which you can see them hand to the bearded guy, who scans it to put their name on the screen, then hands it to the person at the podium to read. They _did_ in fact have the proper spelling at the top, so, why on earth would they be attempting to read the phonetic spellings? My guess is she got stressed out and kept defaulting to looking at that part of the card. Without knowing who she is relative to the university, it's hard to pass solid judgement on her, although it's a pretty big embarrassment for everyone involved. *THAT SAID,* a lot of people are spinning this to mean, "This woman cannot read, and her illiteracy was overlooked and hired by the university because she is a woman".. which is just about the least charitable _bonehead_ take. The fact that people find it more believable that an illiterate woman found her way onto the stage, as opposed to someone with speaking anxiety, is _alarming_ (and telling, for that matter). -You misunderstand. The notes she was given, only contained phonetic spellings. It's not that this woman doesn't know how to read. Had she confidently assumed control over the public situation and identified a solution with regards to the mistake, maybe then she'd be due for a promotion, but aside from that your just being facetious. ""Schools these days" am I right?-

I suspect the biggest screw up was whoever wrote and provided only the phonetic spelling. That would be bizarre. However, waiting past one person’s mispronounced name is inappropriate. How ridiculous that the people on stage with the proper list let this go on. They are responsible.

Thats because only idiots give phonetics under common American names. Phonetics are meant for names which people usually would know how to pronounce. When i see phonetics then i will automatic assume the name has an "uncommon" pronounciation and i would aim to say it as it is phoneticized out of respect. So someone was being a smart ass by giving EVERY name phonetics

At worst, she was bestowing new arabicized names upon them as she pronounced all those students with those complicated names pretty almost perfectly.
