Speaker Battle: Vintage 30 Vs. Greenback in a Metal Mix

Ойын-сауық

Simple shootout of a Mesa-voiced Vintage 30 against a Greenback. I'm also blending the speaker to show how they sound together in the cabinet.
It's interesting how sometimes what sounds good by itself does not translate to the full mix. Let me know which one you think sounds better in the mix and on it's own.

    @@aheadofmetal Man, I recently decided to shake things up by using my NT1A microphone with my Peavey 2x12 instead of my trusty Kemper setup. And you know what? I finally achieved the tone I've been chasing for years. It's pretty funny because I always assumed that specific sound I wanted could only come from tubes, so I never even bothered to try without a tube amp. But it turns out, it's more about the cab and mic. I didn't even approach it systematically; I just went for it, slapping the mic center on the speaker in a totally unconventional position. And against all odds, it worked like a charm. This whole experience has got me realizing there's a lot more to speakers than I've given them credit for. So now, I'm diving deep into the world of speaker tech. I can talk hours about it.

  • @aheadofmetal

    @aheadofmetal

    4 ай бұрын

    @@babatork you and me both bro - I've come to realize a very similar thing. Just by moving a microphone 2mm's right or left changes the tone much more than swapping heads or pedals, and sometimes one side of the speaker sounds better than the other! Lately Ive been far down the speaker buying/selling rabbit hole which is fun. I only have one condenser mic but I never got it to sound good on guitar....glad you got a good tone with one. Makes me want to experiment more with my SM7B... Another thing I found - throwing up 4 mics on 2 2x12 cabinets and blending 4 different speakers together actually sounds great. It's like the phase differences between speakers actually helps the tone round out a bit. I still align the phase visually, but I was amazed how well it works. Even when normalizing the volume between all speakers and blend options, all 4 at the same time sounded the best to me.

    Excellent quality demo. I made some comparisons myself (see my Fredman video if you care, shameless plug). My personal conclusion is that Greenback is an excellent all-around speaker. It's signature sound is kind of a really pleasant cloud of harmonics, which makes it excellent for clean and crunch. The V30 is more focused in its sound, and has more cut. This makes it more fit for certain high gain applications, but makes it less agreeable to clean and crunch. Therefore each speaker has its place. Also, it's a good reason why the speakers can compliment each other!

  • @aheadofmetal

    @aheadofmetal

    5 ай бұрын

    Yup I agree. The greenback has more content 8k and above which verges on too bright when you hear it by itself. But in a mix, it gives a nice crispy detail without smothering the 4k ambulance/babycry frequency that the v30 is known for. The v30 needs more eq notching when used by itself, but blending somehow works great with the v30.

    Gotta admit - How it sounds alone VS in a mix is a huge difference. Alone, the greenback is far more full, V30 lacks tonal range. In the mix though... the sharper bite of the V30 cuts through better to my ear! More dynamic with a quicker attack - it sits in the mix better, with the greenback feeling a bit flat. It may sound better on its own, but nothing is on its own in a mix - each element has to command the space it sits in, and what seem like shortcomings of the V30 are exactly what allow it to own the place it fits into.
