My team just got one and I was really surprised with how professionally made this thing is. Once it’s aligned, and have the height correct, it’s super easy to use. Edges performed great!

You're actually the one who turned me on to the Sparx Sharpener. After seeing your vids on it a couple years ago, I started looking around for a local place that uses it to try the cuts. Found one and tried it. Loved the cuts right away. Now we're working to get one for my team.

Joey Villeneuve did you get the boys to all pitch in to buy a sparx? If so, do you bring it to games so everyone can get their skates sharpened? Follow up to that, does everyone use the same radius ring or do you need to switch the rings all the time to accommodate guys?

  • @JoeyVilleneuve

@@bipaholic 1) no the boys don't pitch in, we took a poll and agreed that all sub money and money from extra activities we organize is going towards a Sparx, then towards colour matched gear like gloves, helmets and pant shells. 2) Yes, it will be brought to games so guys can sharpen their skates before a game, however, given the time it takes to do a pair of skates, the boys and I will be listed in rotation in an excel file so we can fairly rotate through everyone (the machine can only do 3-4 pairs in the 30-40 minutes allowed in the room before a game). The guys will also have the option to "skip" their day and give their spot to someone else prior to games if they either won't be at the game or if their skates don't need sharpening (we don't all play the same number of games between our weekly team game - I for example play 3-6 times a week) 3) I also took a poll of what cut mt guys like and noted that with their name in the excel file, so guys who prefer the same cut will be done on the same day, but we are getting 3 grinding rings.

It is an amazing machine. I’ve had mine 5 years, it is faultless and provides perfect edges. One pass each week, to keep the edges perfect, and the wheel lasts years. The only fault is that it is very heavy, and not really portable. A friend had one at the side of his mini Glice rink, it took a few shots to the glass, but survived.

I originally bought a sparx and used it for a while. I then got a part time job at my local rink and learned how to sharpen skates on a black stone. One of my buddies was selling his dads Wissota sharpener and I bought that. Had my real job make me a stand for it and I ended up selling the sparx. I loved the sparx but I love having a wheel that I can dress to any hollow. Plus per sharpenings it’s way cheaper.

  • @3beltwesty

On the ES100 unit in this video you get 320 passes on the ring via the software. A pass is one back and forth event. Thus for 2 skates (one pair) and 4 passes it is 8 passes. 320 divided by 8 is 40 pairs sharpened. "IF" it you own pair and you do not abuse the skates walking on junk then typically here I get 50 to 60 sharpenings. ie not all have to be 4 passes. The Sparx ring boxes's today say 60 sharpenings per ring "for the average home user" and the ones from a few years ago say 40

Hey Trav ! A few questions about the Sparx Sharpner : 1) How much is the machine (Ahhh forget that I'll google it myself) 2) What is the ROI on that. In how many months/year, the machine is paid entirely versus sharpening the skate at your local place ? 3) What maintenance you need to do on the machine over time ? Price/parts to be replaced ? 4) Does it fits all types of blades ? (I suppose yes...) Player/Goalies (obviously) but normal blades vs black blades, steep steel, etc... ? I hear good things about this machine, just trying to understand if it's worth the investment for me on the long run ! Thanks man ! :)

I think after 3 yers the skates sharpener will pay itself off at least at my pace for sharpening. No maintenance so far, just gotta dump out the dust tray and cycle thru new sharpening wheels from time to time. Yes, it fits ALL skates. Sorry took so long to reply back to you bud

Sparx has a "blank/flat" grinding ring to reset the blades like skate shops. It's only recommended when the skate blade has large gouges or if you're changing cut radius. Most minor nicks can be worked out with additional passes.

@@JoeyVilleneuve Hello, well Sparx did once have a cross grind repair ring for the consumer unit but discontinued awhile back ( maybe 2017 or early 2018? ) . The Sparx cross grind ring was once available on the consumer Sparx ES100 machine but was discontinued I think for safety reasons . Thus you are correct but the special ring is not available anymore for the machine in this video. A newer variant is now only available for the Commercial Sparx PS100 unit . The cross grind SPARX rings today only work on the commercial PS100 unit. (Xg1 Xg2 Xg3 Xg4?? ) rings. The commercial spark unit has an external vacuum to deal with dust, besides the internal filter too. The different XG1, Xg2 etc rings each cover a range of radius of hollow. ie Xg1 is for 5/16" to 7/16 " . In metric mm Radius XG1 = 7.9-11.1 Radius XG2 = 12.7-15.9 Radius XG3 = 17.5-22.2 I am not sure if there is a Xg4 ring of not. It showed up in some earlier links but might have been pre release marketing or a mistake maybe mine too! :) . I think the XG series cross grind rings will "mechanically" fit on the consumer ES100 machine but the machine locks out using them since the chip inside has them only for the pro commercial variant PS100. regards. ie the machine show them as used up.

XTRA DILLA they relive stress in the joints.... so hips, knees, ankles and also groin and glutes. I found they help as well with rvh transitioning and general mobility in the butterfly. Lots of perks, also make the pad sit a little taller on the skate and better rotation from the pad. Highly recommend toe ties, doesn’t matter where from but pro laces is what I support. Last day of sale and cheapest you’ll get em anywhere. It’s kinda a rare thing! Hop on the band wagon bro
