While I agree with your comment, as a birder I must point out that this is a male sparrowhawk, due to the orange and blueish gray colouring. A female sparrowhawk would be light gray and dark gray.

This is 100% a female I have watched this same female nesting for 3 years from close quarters my hide is less than 3m away There is very distinct roles between males and females Males don’t visit the nest for long and don’t brood chicks With both males and females there colouring gets richer each year she is 4 possibly 5 years old now so well coloured

Great to see these up close. They are beautiful birds! We have sparrowhawks in a patch of woodland in central London, UK. Have heard them for a while up in the trees, & finally saw one - with its stripy barred wings - flash by last week. What a privilege!

I’m in a hide on a scaffold tower 3 meters away to get these shots but lots of tree climbing to find the nest 😃

What equipment did you use for these shots? That's stellar quality on par with National Geographic!

I filmed these hawks with Sony a1 and a7s lll cameras 4k 50fps Also used a DJI Ronan 4D as they got bigger

This is amazing to watch! I looked up sparrow hawks but got a little confused. Some places say sparrow hawk is another name for the american kestral, but it also seems like sparrow hawks are their own thing? And the lovely mama in this video doesn't look quite like a kestral.

So this is a Sparrowhawk and yes it gets confusing when a American kestrel is refer to as a Sparrowhawk but a very different species

The shots for the hatching eggs are stunning, how do you gets those without being pecked to death ?

I have been filming this female Sparrowhawk at the nest for 3 years now and she has got very used to me over the years She is not really afraid of me anymore

First moments are so precious love their little kicking legs! Is that mum or dad in the video? I assumed mum but the colouring is more like the redder male.

The males don’t often go to the nest all the incubation and brooding and feeding of the chicks is done by the females and the males hunt and provide the food

We will be doing longer films about the Sparrowhawks nesting season soon

I struggled with this one, very mixed ambiguous feelings. On the one hand yes the chicks are cute and the daddy hawk majestic but I've seen many a video on YT with sparrowhawks catching their prey and let me tell you - by no means is it an instant kill nor a quick death for the starling, magpie or whatever. I know the sparrowhawk is only doing what nature programmed it to do, I only wish they did so more efficiently so as to spare their victims unnecessary, often very prolonged suffering. Still a nice video to watch, as usual sir Robert.

Yes Sparrowhawks don’t make a clean kill especially with larger prey items so I do understand where you are coming from And this is the female at the nest males don’t brood eggs of chicks He only visits briefly once chicks get bigger

Thank you for your reply Robert! Yes I initially even wrote 'momma hawk' but then edited because I was of the impression it is male sparrowhawks that are supposed to have rufous barring - females supposedly should have it grey. An unusual morph I guess? :) Best regards! @@RobertEFuller

We will be working on that I have spent 3 years filming this hawk family and have some incredible footage to share That’s just a little taste for now

You can tell by the clutch size that these chicks love another. No Cainism here. It would have been a different story if it was made up of 2 or 3 eggs.

I have filmed and photographed Sparrowhawk nests almost 10 times now and the females look after there chicks with such tender care it’s quite amazing to see as they are such a affective predator

The males are much smaller and don’t come to the nest very often He hunts for the female and calls her off the nest to give her the prey He occasionally comes to the nest as the chicks grow but visits are very brief
