My hat is off to Larry, he has the patience of Job. Not many techs would even let someone watch them let alone help with a repair in order to learn. This has been a great series of videos that demonstrate how difficult it is to give someone an accurate estimate without going into a bike. Just because a shop has to contact a customer with additional needed parts doesn't mean they are trying to rip someone off. Good job guys.

Just goes to show, your never to old to learn. Knowing what's going on in your engine, trans, etc. sometimes makes you think about how you treat it. I hope you really pay attention to Larry. He isn't steering you wrong. If I ever have to go into an engine I always check to see what can be upgraded. And personally, I would get new heads if at all possible. Good luck with the rebuild.

It's refreshing to sit and watch these videos. Not only are you learning, but with Larry's patience in teaching you, I've picked up a few pointers as well. And it's always good to learn. Appreciate the time you've put into this.

everyone starts somewhere - and most will never go this far. most barely do an oil change. to those brave enough to go further and want to learn more keep it up. the more knowledge we share, the better everyone will be. Spark plugs are the windows to the internals of an engine. I have never considered myself a mechanic, but I do try to do all the maintenance on every vehicle I have owned. I have never rebuilt a motorcycle engine yet, but have rebuilt a 1979 Dodge Ramcharger twice, once when it had 100,000 miles, and again at 360,000 miles. It had 400,000+ miles on it when I sold it. Now I only have a motorcycle, and watching a crapload of videos about motorcycles.

Thanks for doing the video series with Maxwell House as I have learned a great deal watching these! Taking everything apart has taught me quite a bit of the motorcycle mechanics being able to see it broken down. Well done!

Hey man I love the videos. A smart man knows his limits. I am a mechanic, not a motorcycle mechanic, but a mechanic in general. I have a general knowledge in a lot of things. There are things I will do myself, and some that I don’t do myself. This taught me a few things I would never have thought about during disability.

Dont forget that any good welding shop can tig up those dings in the heads....its not really a big deal.

Boy, oh boy, I've been building Harley Davidson motors for 40 years. And yeah, ok, that's about all I can say about that.

This is honestly why I decided at an early age to be a mechanic lol. I knew I’d never be able to afford to have shit done correctly and the way it needs to be. So usually 99% of everything in my life it just comes down to how much the parts cost. Well that and a couple hundred grand in tools lol but I figure other peoples stuff I fix pays for the tools.

It’s funny because you see different KZread personalities on adventures and blah blah blah and you feel like “man I wish I had some extra scratch to do that. Some people have it made “ lol Well things like this happen and it helps to realize that you all are just everyday people. A family man. In 80 I worked as an auto mechanic in a well established garage meaning I had access to what I needed But now I'm 68 yr old retired and ride a Softail with no tools like in the garage my scooter has 86000 mi and running strong but if I was still in the garage it would have been redone yrs ago so alot of times even with knowledge you still Without both your kind of screwed but I do keep maintenance up and ride in the wind Anyway keep it between the mustard and mayo and rubber side down good luck and may GBU Later

About those heads and I encourage you to ask Larry. An old mechanic once told me that dimples will cause hot spots whereas a smooth even surface will create an even burn.

A compression check and leak-down test on each cylinder would have been helpful prior to tear down. It would have least given a few clues on what to look for.

Y’all opened up the top end. Now it would be foolish to not freshen it up. Like Larry keeps sayin. How far do ya want to go? You could have stopped before you pulled the cylinders down. I have seen plenty of shiny cylinders over the years not use oil. Rear cyl head looks like she leaks oil in.

Larry's going to need lots of therapy after this or at least a large bottle of self medication. 😂

Fix it right, or fix it twice. If you want to race, keep your wallet full, ask anybody at the track!
