He’s not bilingual as he’s Danish, so fluent in Danish, which means he also understands Norwegian and Swedish, so he speaks and understands more than just English and Spanish…

I'm an Argentinian living in the US, Viggo has a flawless rioplatense spanish, in expressions, cadence and even common forms. Like using "sh" as the sound of "ll" in caballo. He is probably being careful with his Spanish since he is talking to a Spaniard audience in this video, but in interviews with Argentinans ... Hay que tener en cuenta también los regionalismo... Cada país los tiene aparte de su propio idioma original, yá que éste se enriquece con las nuevas palabras que se dan en diferentes regiones de un mismo territorio. Los argentinos no tenemos obligación de hablar como españoles o mexicanos.

Flawless Spanish(from Argentina) I would say. I don't consider wrong the use of "vinieron" taking in account that he is speaking like an Argentinian, and they utilize "vinieron" quite often in this context. But I understand why you highlight this, as to RAE "fueron" is the correct one. Nice video!

Creo que utiliza la expresión "vinieron a los Estados Unidos" porque su residencia actual es en ese lugar si bien no se encuentre fisicamente ahí.

He learned from childhood because his parents moved to Argentina. His mom was American and Dad was Danish.

He speaks 9 languages fluent plus several more

¿Habla con bastante fluidez dice? habla Español como nativo Argentino, hasta dice castellano, creo que dice bien cuando vinieron a Estados Unidos porque el vivi en Estados Unidos por mas que esté en España en ese momento, soy de Argentina y probablemente diría igual que él si estuviera en otro país, ejemplo cuando mis abuelos vinieron a Argentina.

His Spanish in "Carlito's Way" was not only good, it was great because he delved into Nuyorican Spanish which wasn't missed by us Puerto Ricans born in New York. He nailed it.

Sorry to correct you dude but, when you said he made a mistake saying “cuando vinimos a usa” … it’s understandable that in your case being Mexican you don’t use it, but me, being Argentinian, can tell you that we Argentinians use the way he says it so for us it makes total sense what he said. He’s kind of telling the story when the were kids so it’s ok to use it. Your the teacher tho ! Good video btw

Is that correct? For me, to say "cuando fui a China visité la Gran Muralla" is the correct version since we are not in China.

@@CasaSpanish es un modismo de argentina; si dices vinieron te puedes referir a tu hogar o pais aunque no estes en el, china no tiene la misma connotacion pero aun asi seria correcto si estas hablando de tu estadia en china. Las lengas vivas se nutren constantemente y por eso varian de lugar en lugar

Posta, el argentino calculo que le debe resultar dificil, ya que hablamos como el orto, y encima en todas las provincicas tenemos distintos modismos.

Con el mayor de los respetos,pero no es un error decir "cuando ellos vinieron a Estados Unidos" aún cuando geográficante la persona no está en ese momento en ese lugar. En español usamos términos de uso figurativo. Se puede decir efectivamente "cuando ellos se mudaron a Estados Unidos (desde Argentina)" . "Cuando ellos fueron a USA (desde Argentina)" o "cuando ellos vinieron a USA (desde Argentina)". Hay que aclarar que Vigo Mortensen ha dicho en innumerables entrevistas,que de todos los idiomas que él habla,el español es el que más domina y es el que más habla correctamente!

Estas equivocado, las expresiones y la forma de hablar de Viggo , son perfecto castellano rioplatense. Los rioplatenses nos expresamos diferente que en otros dialectos del español y, conjugamos los verbos de otra manera. "Vinieron" es una conjugacion perfecta y si dijo vinieron en vez de fueron, es porque pasa la mayor parte del tiempo en Estados Unidos y esta acostumbrado a hablar como si estuviera espacialmente alli. (Perdon por la falta de acentos, pero no entiendo como esta configurado mi nuevo teclado).

Argentina is a very large country and has many different accents depending on the region. What you are referring to as Argentinian Spanish is actually Rio Platense Spanish. The Spanish spoken in northern Argentina in southern Argentina and along the Chilean border are all Argentinian Spanish yet they are all quite different.

His Spanish is just impeccable. My main language is Spanish so I can tell. I find it awesome for him to keep his Spanish so good even though he came to the US at 8.

en Argentina generalmente se dice idioma "castellano", que sería lo correcto, porque en España hay varios idiomas según la región, por más que sea el idioma oficial. Desde el colegio primario siempre se nos enseñó como "castellano", incluso teníamos la materia o curso de Castellano (no español)

In Argentina it is the common use MUDAR-MUDANZA

He speaks perfect Spanish in my opinion and don't need to be corrected that is pointless, I could use the same words he is using with no problem as a choice whether or not is grammatically correct .

En la Argentina, no usamos "mesteño", usamos "mestizo". "Pinto" es uno de los nombres de los pelajes de caballos en mi país.

My initial thought was "why wouldn't he speak spanish like a native if he spent the most important years in Argentina", but then I remembered some family members whom after living in the US for decades don't speak english or speak it with an accent. So, hats off to Viggo.

What books would you recommend for a teacher who teaches history in the United States, but would like to speak academic Spanish in order to teach in DLI program?

People call him a Dane, or whatever, but, he's an American. His dad is from Denmark and his mom is American. He lived in Argentina though.

@@richardmossy5540 LOL not as similar as you are making it sound. DANISH and NORWEGIAN are very similar. SPANISH AND PORTUGUESE are very similar. I am saying this with confidence as these are languages I speak. English is the easiest one of the bunch and it has a very simple verb conjugation system. The conjugation system in DANISH and NORWEGIAN is different from English. I don't understand what you mean by saying Danish is similar to English. Give clear examples. I am curious.

He’s completely fluent but I also understand the ‘mistakes’ the teacher is pointing out. The problem is informal Spanish (what natives speak) and formal Spanish (what you learn in school) might as well be two different languages. 🤣

Creo que lo que dijiste de venir, ir y mudarse está perfecto, pero es algo que los argentinos hacemos muy a menudo, entendemos que cuando decimos venir, hacemos referencia a que sus hermanos fueron a Estados Unidos al momento que él se estaba refiriendo (viviendo en Estados Unidos). Pero es lógico que marques esa diferencia a tus alumnos, ya que puede crear confusión.

No solo que no interfiere en el mensaje sino que lo perfecciona. Esa tal vez es la diferencia entre el español , más figurativo, poético o metaforico que el inglés siempre tan descriptivo, funcional o utilitario.

Lo de vinieron no es un error. Muchas veces cuando contamos algo suele suceder que nos “trasladamos” al lugar de lo relatado. Lo que hizo es súper nativo para un argentino. Tener mala leche se usa en Argentina también.

He has dual citizenship and moved with his father to København when he was 11 after his parents split up. Good analysis. I would use the verb "vinieron" just like he did. It's a bad but common use. I wouldn't blame him at all there, but it's good to point out the fact that it's not correct. But in the end, we're always changing the language, whatever this one is. Also, I would like to point out that I have never seen spaniards using the term "mala leche", but more commonly "mala hostia". I might just have never seen it and it happens, but "mala leche" is as argentinian as you can get. Just watch Maradona's famous "la tenes adentro" video and you'll see lol

"Pinto" is a full full gaucho term according to the argentinian wildhorse breed lineages, spaniards call them "mestenos" (from there "Mustangs")

En Argentina decimos "vinieron" y no es un error. "fueron" se usa cuando hablas de personas que fueron a un lugar en el que vos no estabas. Si fueron al lugar donde estaba yo, entonces vinieron no fueron. Mala leche es re común en Argentina también. Otra cosa, si te fijás dijo "se usa esa palabra ACÁ en España?" Y no "aquí". De hecho el chabón hablo como hablamos los argentinos de Buenos Aires en toda la nota, no hizo a nuestros ojos ninguna variación del castellano cotidiano que hablamos en Buenos Aires.

I'm not a Spanish speaker but for some reason mala leche reminds me of Malinche. Which I think can be used as an insult in Mexico. Just an observation probably has nothing to do with each other
