Same with me: German, English, French, Norwegian, Spanish, Italian, some Russian and Czech and I learned Latin (but this isn't a language most people really "speak" today) :D.

Yeah, he was incredible. Sorry but this Top 10 isn't great.....some of the celebes is basically one sentence or poor. Esp those who supposedly 'speak' Spanish or Italian (good try but certainly not fluent nevermind fluent speakers). To finish, Mr Lee absolutely should be in this top 10!!!

Venus and Serena Williams both speak French, Italian and Spanish in addition to their native English and Venus can also speak a good bit of Chinese. Actors aren't the only celebs.

One of the biggest surprises ever was hearing Viggo Mortensen speak perfect Argentinian Spanish, I would also add Anya Taylor Joy as she is fluent in Argetinian Spanish as well due to living there and her father being of Argentinian descent. As someone born in the USA there are a lot of People with Latino Parents that don’t speak Spanish at all so that’s a feat I say.

He father is not Argentinian descent, he's white. White people have European descent. Her father was just born in Argentina, that's why he speaks Argentina's Spanish.

My Dad who immigrated to US in the late 60s speaks 4 languages fluently and is working on his 5th. He likes to tell the joke "a person who speaks 2 languages is called bilingual, a person who speaks 3 languages is called trilingual , what do you call someone who speaks only one language?... American!😂

In most of the country it simply isn't necessary to learn a language other than English. It is an academic exercise for people or a way to connect with distant roots on another continent. Outside of cities with large immigrant populations it is common to go weeks, months or even years without hearing another language spoken unless you visit a Chinese or Mexican restaurant. You can travel a thousand miles in any direction within the US and English is still the primary language. In Europe if you travel a hundred miles you are likely somewhere with a completely different language and culture, so there is a major incentive for multilingualism.

You can still learn one for yourself. It's actually a lot more enjoyable and realistic to learn a language because you WANT to vs FORCED to. (Of course not counting people who move to a different country).

Here in the UK we have to learn a language. The choices are: French, Spanish and German. French is really useful considering our close proximity to France. I learned French from the age of 10.

Some speak foreign languages, and some can only say "thank you" in a few languages.

I'm from the UK and I can speak Swedish. It always impresses me and warms my heart to see people learning other languages

It's very impressive and commendable. My doctor/GP here in Copenhagen, working in our most diverse area, speaks a multitude of languages. He's from Armenia and ofc speaks Armenian, but also Danish, Swedish, German, Greek, Italian, Spanish, English, Polish, Russian, French, Kurdish, Turkish, Arabic and Portuguese. He also speaks Serbo-Croat, and maybe that should count as one or many, just like the scandinavian languages. He is also a really great and compassionate person.

I mean…any celebrity that lives outside of the U.S. doesn’t really surprise me.

Very impressive. But I am surprised that neither the narrator nor anyone involved in the production of this video knew that "bilingual" is pronounced "bilinGWal" and not "bilinGYOOWal". And she said the word several times.

Mariska Hargitay from Law and Order: SVU knows English, Spanish, French, Italian, and Hungarian.

You forgot Jane Fonda - she learned French when she was married to director Roger Vadim. John Malkovich went to the same school as Jodie Foster - Lycee Francais de Los Angeles - & speaks French. The Affleck brothers spent a year in Mexico when they were children & could speak Mexican Spanish. Tatiana Maslany was born & raised in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada & is trilingual - English, German, & French. Cobie Smulders & Emily Vancamp, being also Canadians, are bilingual in English & French.

As a French, Jodie Foster is impressive because she sounds just like a native speaker. The rhythm, the vocabulary, the lack of accent... You can only tell this is not her first language from the very rare mistakes she makes.

What all that hype around this actor about? He's just had learned by memory some sentences that he repeats here and there. That doesn't make a person fluent or even beginner.

Well, if I use the same criteria as used in this video and other similar about speaking languages, then I personally speak (in no particular order): French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Catalan, Galician, English, German, Swedish, Norwegian, Danish, Lithuanian, Polish and Russian. That's 14 of them. Do I have to become an actor for anybody to be impressed?

You PROBABLY didn't know that Latin pop singer SHAKIRA is ACTUALLY of SPANISH DESCENT, and speaks FLUENT Spanish! Cut to Shakira: "Ley leY lEy LeY le ley!"

In US people are surprised the celebrities speak other languages while in EU it is normal to speak more than a language, sometimes even 3 or 4.

I can speak English, Spainish and French and have some proficiency in Irish Gaelic and German. Also know some words/phrases in other languages but not enough to claim any proficiency in them.

Tom Hiddleston is the definition of perfection, that man can do anything but what about Michael Fassbender and Tilda Swinton ???

I didn't know some of these actors and actresses can speak multiple languages that's pretty awesome. I didn't Tom Hiddleston can speak German and Italian. That's so wow. XD

I'm Swedish and Swedish and I can understand written Danish because it's so close to Swedish, but understanding it spoken or pronouncing it is hard. Especially pronunciation. I really can't bend my tongue that way.

One celebrity that surprised me that can speak another language is Synyster Gates, lead guitarist of Avenged Sevenfold. He did an interview in perfect Spanish. I wouldn’t be surprised if he could speak German too. He’s of Spanish and German ancestry.

Monica Bellucci knows french because she was married to a frenchman and has lived in France for over 20 years (you can’t help but pick up the language that way) and “knows” english just a little more than most italians do - that’s clear from Bellucci’s (very) strong italian accent she still retains while acting. Try listening to Luca Marinelli (The Old Guard) or, better, Pierfrancesco Favino (Angels and Demons, World War Z and others)….if it was just their voices and accents, you wouldn’t be able to tell they’re 100% born-and-bred italians. I’m italian, so I would know. :)

I can only speak French and Spanish. I wanted to speak Portuguese, Italian and Japanese. But they are extremely difficult to learn, and I find it frustrating.

I would have assumed Christopher Lee would be one the first place. (Though maybe, with classical opera education it's just not that big of a surprise that he had to be fluent in multiple languages.) But this list verifies my suspicion - that most actors who haven't been raised in Germany/Austria/Switzerland and haven't lived here don't seem inclined to learn the language for as long as it takes to speak fluently. Which is understandable as German is rather hard - but it's also noticable in most Hollywood and British productions as most sentences that are supposed to be in German either just make no sense or are completely unintelligible. (Though I heard, same goes for Russian.)
