If Spanish people carried on the way some Brits do when they visited the Uk, then British people would protest. I don’t understand the behavior of some when they’re in a foreign country.

Today 20/4/24, I hear of protests in the Canaries against the number of tourists.

You certainly can't blame Majorca or Alicante for not wanting thuggish behaviour can you.

Seen some of these idiots on flights to Alicante. They are dangerous and should have the freedom of flight removed

Bad actors need to be firmly dealt with. Don’t paint all tourists with that brush. Tourism is a large part of the Spanish economy.

I won't be put off going to Spain just because they have new rules in place. I will follow the rules and behave accordingly like i always do.

The sector that caused the drought is agriculture. The farmers broke the water cycle years ago and are still over extracting from the aquifers to grow unsuitable crops on unsuitable land. There are even plasticos in the Alpujarras now. It’s unsustainable but the Juntas have neither the will nor the money to take the drastic action that's needed so the situation will only get worse. If you live in Andalucía then you live in a desert. The entire Mediterranean coast is almost as bad. Don't be fooled by all those citrus and/or olive groves looking so green. Those sad monocultures are part of the problem.

And AVOCADOS! I stopped eating them because there's just no way to sustain growing them.

Main problem here Alicante region where i live ,is not the majority international tourists. Night clubs pumping out noise from 2am to 6am Fri Sat Sun in urban zones which have spread out to where these clubs are , has been keeping families awake for years in summer peak times.

I have just returned from a lovely break in Alicante. Loud tourists are not needed there. :-) Good to warn people about the potential drought though.

Loud tourist? I live in Alicante & only heard Swedish loud voices on occasion.

When me and my wife have visited Spain (Barcelona), most recently, July.August 2023 (for just short of 2 weeks), we did not go as tourists, we visited/stayed with her family…and except for a trip to Lloret de Mar and Playa Santa Cristina with her family, we didn’t go to any touristy areas. Didn’t visit Las Ramblas, La Sagrada Familia, or any other “go-to” tourist spots in Barcelona. On a drive west from Barcelona \; with my wife’s niece (who is just 2 years younger than she-they grew up together) and her husband, to look at some homes/properties for sale, on a whim, we visited the Monistrol de Montserrat…the parking lot was nearly full, and there were a number of tour buses. Yeah, I know, some of you are going to still call us tourists…even though we were just visiting family my wife hadn’t seen in more than a decade…can’t please everyone.

The hotel development at La Tejita, local to me, must be stopped. There is less and less wild coast left on Tenerife. La Tejita is outstandingly wild and beautiful. The laws were flagrantly disobeyed. The guidelines from Madrid disregarded, as were the voices of locals AND tourists alike. I do hope the hunger strikers make the difference. Enough is enough. So many beautiful places vanished or ruined.

The junta de Andalucia have relaxed the law to include communities with hotels being allowed to top up water thank goodness, but private villas still restricted. I've maintained our pool (12 houses) for 30 years and know how to minimise water usage whilst cleaning . we havent done any irrigation since october and will not until next year. the last drought in 1991-1996 our lovely garden resembled straw, but when the rains came in december it recovered all on its own, Nothing to do with mythical " global warming" 🙄😣 in fact we've not had any record breaking temperatures since 1995, quite the opposite 😊

Not just 'Brits'. Many many mainland Spanish residents visit the canary Islands for their holidays. On the canarian weekly website the canary Islands are trying to encourage digital nomads. Meanwhile Tenerife and lanzarote are in the process of constructing new hotels probably for tourists 😂. Couldn't make it up but then you're dealing with the ludicrous Spanish government and the precision propaganda of the uk media. What could possibly go wrong?

Every person including tourists must conserve water in Spain. Tourists must realise that if you want a good holiday in Spain you must look after the environment and protect it .

Well said Stu. The crisis isn't so much about tourism, more about climate change. If the politicians can't even work together at this early stage of climate change....God help us!

Pools for the kids in summer is a critical recreational place and helps cool them down. I’m in support of that. We call it different, but the city pools are open here in San Antonio Texas for the kids and there are adult only hours early in the morning and evening. And we do get hot here in south Texas!

Alicante is not against tourists, just noisy rude tourists, who also shower 3 times a day or insist on filling baths.

Thanks and hi stu. You are so correct. It seems politics and the tune of people seem to run extreme nowadays. Too much catering to points of view rather than what a country as a whole needs. My way or the highway is the song they sing. Reality is hitting here in the usa also. Nothing worse than extremes on either side.

I recently tried my hand at some wonky fun math to see what it would look like for Spain and other dry climes. In the hypothetical, you take some solar energy and some dehumidifiers... If my memory serves me right from a week or so ago... The solar array would need to be approximately the size of Spain itself haha, and enough dehumidifiers to pack a volumetric area of around 400 Empire State buildings. That's all of Spains water needs, for around 4-5 years of gdp. Sounds like a good loan project to pitch to EU. They better get on it. Conversely, to fill a swimming pool reasonably quick, on par with a garden hose, you need the area of solar array to be about the size of a house's roof per 40 units of dehumidifiers. Scale that up, that's enough personal use water for 4-5 people daily (on the high end). That retails around $20k or so. Could probably fill a home pool in a week with the ambient humidity (which is surprisingly high enough even in drier climates for this to work). Silly infrastructure of the future, no doubt. But the water is there, not in the form of rain or in the ground, or being piped, it's just ripe for the taking. Sounds silly, but expecting to depend on the weather, costly inefficient and ageing delivery systems, and bone dry reservoirs, you're just as well off praying for it instead. Wait until people with enough money figure out they can just pay their way and get water. Pray or pay. Those are the options.

For every 1 British tourist there are 4 tourists from other EU countries. Restricting tourism does not apply to EU citizens. All 400 million EU citizens qualify as being locals. They can stay in any part of Spain for as long as they wish.

Why do people seem to pronounce city/country names in an accent. English but put on Spanish twang for city names. Try it with welsh names but put on welsh accent

Also just returned from Alicante. Loud tourist were not the problem, loud processions, banging drums, musically instruments with shouting spanish enthusiasts. Loud tourist could not compete. Police standing around directing traffic. So loud noise only a problem depending on the source, I guess.!

Guess what? If you price water properly, then shortages disappear. Do we see farmers run out of cattle or sheep? No, because they manage their property and maintain their herds. If water is handed out on a political basis, not on price, then you get shortages.

The Canaries need tourists! I blame the politicians who see no further then 4 years and their pockets. We need long term planning and no fraud!

My question to you sir...I watch most of your videos, but is it worth it all the hassle, weird and pessimistic politics in Spain, insane rules and bans to continue living there?

I will invent a new concept now and call it Spains bermuda triangle of problems with tourism, agriculture and drought. Maybe an EU push for nuclear power and desalination plants can solve all three and we can have long showers and eat what we want after that?!
