The object you see fly by just before the explosion is a Pelican or Vulture, close to the camera. SpaceX stated in their film on Netflix "Return to Space", it was a mechanical problem. They used this footage in "Return to Space".

Sound travels at 0.332 KM/S Camera was "apparently" 4420 KM away 12 seconds between visual and audio. So, 0.332km*12 = 3.984km This concludes that the camera was actually just 4km away. (1d.p) EDIT : The reddit author just claimed to have made a typo. 4420 M not KM. EDIT 2 : Please take a moment to scroll down and look at my reply. Okay, guess this got more attention of that I had anticipated... I found this video from a Reddit post earlier on today. And the author of the post did indeed state the camera was 4420 KM away. And of course I didn't believe his statement, so I went on to do a bit of maths to conclude that the Rocket was "not" 4420 KM away. And my bad I should've added some ~'s in order to show the slight inaccuracies of my calculations. So, I saw a comment much like mine, yet his result was more accurate than mine, due to his more accurate calculations and numbers used. Here it is.. For anyone wondering I timed the sound delay to be ~12 seconds. The camera was ~4.08 km (~2.5 mi) away. Calculations per request Timed with stopwatch app Speed of sound via google is 340 m/s * 12 s = 4083.48 m Converted to miles = 2.537 mi - Credit, FoxxMD -Reddit -By the way, for all the toxic people in the reply section, calm down. I appreciate all of the criticism that I was given and it should and will aid me in the years to come, but some of you need to stop getting so built up over a simple maths problem. Just calm down.. And i'm only 15.

The object is traveling too fast to be a bird or a bug The object is a shiny orb, and clearly not a bird or a bug The object moves in a perfectly straight line, unlike other objects prior to the explosion If the object is behind the rocket relative to the camera, the conclusion must be that it is both larger and moving much more quickly than a bug or a bird in the foreground.

Actually the second stage is separately connected to the strongback. It's even evident in the way that it took another 8 seconds to fall without being blown way up in the air. But you can see as the explosion and smoke clears a bit that the entire top of the strongback is melted so there was no way it would have been able to hold it and keep it out of harms way.

I really appreciate your KZread videos on the SpaceX static fire test anomaly of 1-Sep-2016. We recorded seismic and infrasound data about 1.4 km away from the pad. I wonder if you would be interested in this dataset, since you might have insights that we miss. The video seems to skip at 3m26s - do you know what time it goes too? What time does it start 13:06:00? And is there a longer video sequence available? We see interesting signals in our seismic and infrasound data for about 26 minutes.

What could have caused that large secondary explosion at 3:41? Id figure all LOX, RP-1, and hydrazine would have been mostly cooked off by this point. Maybe its the TEB used for starting the engines, no characteristic green flame though..

+Call Me Toast they are private, but don't kid yourself, without NASA (one of the few actually useful and worthwhile government agencies) SpaceX wouldn't exist. They won the nice contract worth billions over other competitors, but they've been financed from NASA all along, plus all the infrastructure and technologies already exist and are now well known commodities. What they've done with the technology is amazing, but most of it is from past work.

This is where the pad abort system on the Dragon Capsule would be really nice. The fairing barely looked damaged as it fell. The hydrazine fuel carried in the satellite made for quite a secondary explosion after the fairing opened and the tanks on the satellite were compromised.

In fact, on this spectacularly clear morning, I was able to view the first-stage portion of the Vandenberg launch from my apartment roof in LOS ANGELES, 125 miles away! Using binoculars of course. But I hope SX knows what they're doing, using that newfangled super-chilled propellant. I hope it's not more trouble than it's worth. I hope we don't start calling it "Rocket-B-Gone".

for 15 seconds prior to explosion , the bottom of the second stage vent cloud ceased. A cloud started right where the explosion happened. Was the second vent actually smoke from a fire? The tanks were lifted when the tanks were dry so no cracks were present.? inmarsat today. maybe an improved maston jet.
