Spaced: A Forgotten MASTERPIECE?!? (TV Show Review)

Фильм және анимация

Spaced, a British sitcom, has the energy of an MTV commercial combined with Stephen Fry. It was written by Simon Pegg and Jessica Hynes, and was directed by Edgar Wright. But, was it any good? Is it worth remembering or does it deserve to remain forgotten? Join me as we discover if Spaced is a forgotten masterpiece.

[1] For what I mean when I say "which is rare for sitcom women", I mean that there appear to be a few select roles that women in sitcoms often get to play (either dumb, a sexual object, nerdy and that's their only character trait, etc.), and Daisy doesn't fit snugly in any of those boxes, to the betterment of the show. For more detail on what I mean when I discuss those codified roles, check out my video on That's My Bush: • That's My Bush: A Forg...

For me personally, the late nineties and early 2000s was the real golden age of British sitcom (mainly from the BBC and Channel 4). There was How Do you Want Me?, The Office (UK), The League Of Gentleman (which I've gone off a bit now, but is still worthy of a mention), Spaced, Black Books, The Mighty Boosh and the beginning of the loooooong run of Peep Show (maybe my all-time favourite). Father Ted never quite did it for me to the same extent, but many people adore it, and that was from around then too.

I discovered this at the perfect moment in my life. The big bang theory was getting really popular around this time and I wasn't really a fan. It was nice to see Spaced giving us a more accurate and authentic portrayal of "nerd culture" for a lack of better words on tv.

I find British shows usually tend to have more realism in comedy shows, perhaps because of the low budgets, very few writers, channels very rarely interfere with production....

I think the thing with Amber is that she's an avatar for the cool that Tim associates with being a teen. Part of the comedy is people in their mid twenties getting anxious about their aging, and how much longer they can see themselves, and more importantly be seen by others, as young and cool. That's particularly played up in the slow-mo playing war episode. They don't really fancy Amber (who was played by Simon Pegg's real life kid sister), they just want to be part of her age cohort's subculture. Going to a party where there are teenage girls emulates the commonplace nightclub experience, or cool music-venue pub experience where you would be around teenage girls, as well as older young women, because bouncers always let them in.

Not British but had never heard of it until earlier this year when I found it on one of our free streaming services over here in the States. At first I was disappointed that it only had 14 episodes, but having watched it several times now, it is basically like watching two movies and it did not wear out its welcome.

I loved spaced. I love seeing it being talked about more. As a Brit I would mention that one of the reasons that the show it loved as it was the origin to a lot of famous actors careers. So it’s like a time capsule back before then. David Walliams who went on to make little Britain. Tyres who been in lots of dramas and black mirror. Reece Shiresmith who went on to make inside no.9 (another UK Must watch TV) and Brian who went on to play Jim in Friday night dinner (another good tv show)

It was not the first sitcom in which a laugh track is not used in the UK. In 1998 The Royle Family started on BBC2 and its creators Caroline Aherne and Craig Cash insisted on No Laugh Track for the show. It became an immediate hit, so much so that it got transferred for BBC1 and soon would be part of the schedule on Christmas Day. Anyway watch the opening sequence for the show and then watch the final Spaced Episode Leaves and you see the influence of The Royle Family had on Spaced. It also helped that Jessica Stevenson/Hynes played a supporting character in The Royle Family. The Supporting Cast, well looking at it, it is like watching the Bambi Episode in The Young Ones, so many people who go on to be individually successful. Nick Frost had never acted before, Julia Deakin had been in conventional sitcoms before. Mark Heap would later be in Friday Night Dinner. David Walliams, Bill Bailey, Paul Kaye, Mark Gatiss, Reece Shearsmith, John Simm, Kevin Eldon and Peter Serafinowicz would all go on to successful careers themselves. Then there was one person who appeared briefly in the episode Dissolution and the idiot who didn't listen to Marsha Klein's advert properly on the phone. A few months after that another sitcom that idiot co-wrote, and they insisted on No Laugh Track for their show. It started on BBC2 and I'll leave you to work out which show that was.

damn, it really annoys me when a kid reviews an old show. yes, it didn't have many black people in it, same with friends, and if either of those shows were made today they would rightly be lambasted for not representing society fairly. but you are judging a 90s shows with modern eyes, and these shows were massively progressive for their time, but you'll never now because you weren't alive back then. your comments only undermine the open mindedness they did portray simply because they don't meet todays (rightly) higher standards.
